What is this workshop about?What do you do with your old clothes when they wear out, or no
longer fit, or you just don’t like them anymore?
Answer: Upcycle them!
Upcycling is taking an item that is no longer needed or wanted
and giving it a new life as something that is creative.
Students will be challenged to convert old, outdated, dreary clothing into young and trendy fashionable creations. They will produce a moodboard to capture their thought process from which they develop a series of fashion sketches. Final designs must fulfil the requirements set out in the brief. Tutor support, design advice and critiques will be on-going throughout the three-day course.
Background Information - UpcyclingUpcycling is taking an item that is no longer needed or wanted and giving it new life as something that is either useful or creative. This seemingly basic concept has sparked an exciting revolution with the current generation.
Why has Upcycling become so popular?The increased awareness of environmental sustainability and a sluggish economy has led to a major increase in Upcycling. Students short on cash may Upcycle their out of date jeans by adding a few seams and rips instead of buying a new pair. Home owners are looking for ways to renovate with salvaged, and in some cases, free materials. The green mum on a budget may upcycle her old clothes into clothes for her children. This innovative spirit and environmental consciousness has led to Upcycling in nearly all areas of life. From green companies to your Mother’s kitchen, people are looking to save money and the planet. Upcycling does both.

• The competition is open to applicants aged 16-30.
• The competition may be filmed and photographed, by entering you give consent for these images to be
televised, published and used for publicity for NorthTec.
• NorthTec retains copyright over all materials and photographs for media.
• There is a non-refundable entry fee for successful entrants of $50 to cover costs over the three-day
challenge.
• Application forms and fees (where required) must be received by 4pm, Thursday 12 September.
• Prizes are subject to change.
• NorthTec reserves the right to disqualify any entrant for disorderly behaviour or misconduct as determined
by NorthTec organising and teaching staff.
• Judges’ decision is final.
