A LETTER FROM FAS LEADERSHIP

Dearest Friends, As promised, we are back in touch to update you on in-person communal davening at Fifth Avenue Synagogue. In anticipation of re-opening, we have made extensive preparations in coordination with the FAS Medical Advisory Committee, including an important upgrade to our HVAC system in the main sanctuary. Pending completion of the HVAC upgrade, we hope to open Saturday, July 18th, for our first Shabbat services together. After engaging in careful planning and deliberations, we intend to reopen with the following requirements in place:

• Advance Registration will be required. We ask that you please make your reservations by Thursday prior to the Shabbat service you wish to attend. You will not be allowed to attend without making a reservation and answering the screening questions on the reserva-tion form. Priority will be given to those members who need to recite Kaddish. Both men and women will be allowed to attend, but all attendees at this time must be 13 and over.

• Health Screening. Anyone with any signs of illness (including, but not limited to fever, cough, sore throat, loss of taste/smell) should NOT, under any circumstances, attend services. If you are ill or have been exposed to COVID, please stay home until you are sure that you are not ill. On the day of services, all attendees will be required to monitor their own health status, including taking their temper-ature.

• Services Times. Services will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude no later than 10:30 a.m. In order to reduce risk of transmission from prolonged exposure, the services will be streamlined and will minimize singing and any non-essential speaking. We ask that you arrive ten minutes early in order to provide for socially-distanced travel to the sanctuary. For the time being, there will be no kiddush following services.

• Elevator use. The elevator will be set to take riders directly to the third floor or Sanctuary Balcony without an attendant. We will limit the number of riders at any one time. The stairwell will also be open.

• Masks. All attendees will be required to wear a mask at all times. Masks must cover both mouth and nose.

• Social distancing. All attendees will be assigned to a designated spot that will be at least 8 feet from any other attendee. This is in keeping with OU guidelines for social distancing. All attendees will be at least 20 feet from individuals who are leading services. We ask that all attendees maintain social distancing upon entry to and exit from the synagogue.

• Siddurim and Chumashim. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own siddurim and chumashim. Kippot, tefillin, and tallitot must be brought from home.

• High-Risk populations. Per CDC guidelines, we discourage those who may be more vulnerable to COVID-19 due to underlying health conditions or because they are over 65 from attending. If you are in these categories, we ask that you consult with your physi-cian before attending.

• Cleaning Protocols. Enhanced cleaning protocols will be in place throughout the building with particular attention to high-touch surfaces. Sanitizer will be available throughout the building. All rules and regulations will be strictly enforced. We thank all of you in advance for your understanding and your compliance with these new requirements. Please know that your health and safety are our highest priorities at all times and all new regulations have been instituted with this guiding principle. Putting these measures in place now will also support our efforts to daven together during the High Holidays. Although we are eager to see you in person, we do understand that some of you may choose not to attend services at this time based on your own elevated risk or concern for a vulnerable family member. Even without elevated risk, there is no obligation to engage in communal davening at this time. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We would be happy to speak with you. You can reach us through the shul number at 212-838-2122 or by email at [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]. The summer is marked by a three-week period in which we mourn the destruction of the First and Second Temples, as well as other tragedies suffered by our people in the course of history. The Three Weeks begin with the fast day of Shiva Asar B’Tammuz (the seventeenth of Tammuz - Thursday, July 9), the anniversary of the day on which the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the enemy. The Three Weeks conclude with the fast day of Tisha B’Av (the ninth of Av).

This is a period of mourning during which, among other things, weddings are not celebrated and haircuts are not taken. The mourning is intensified during the nine days immediately preceding Tisha B’Av, when it is forbidden to eat meat and drink wine, other than on Shabbat. The Nine Days begin on Rosh Chodesh Av (Wednesday, July 22) and, like the Three Weeks, culminate on Tisha B’Av. This year, Tisha B’Av begins on Wednesday evening, July 29, and continues to sunset on Thursday, July 30.

The fast of Tisha B’Av commences at 8:13 PM on July 29, and concludes at 8:51 PM on July 30. On Wednesday evening of Tisha B’Av, at 8:30 PM, Megillat Eicha, the book of Lamentations, is read. Kinot are recited both in the evening and in the morning. The five forms of affliction observed on Yom Kippur - eating/drinking, washing/bathing, anointing one’s body, wearing leather shoes and marital relations - all apply with equal restriction on Tisha B’Av.

________________

Please join us on Erev Tisha B’Av - Wednesday night, July 29, at 8:30 PM for a virtual communal reading

of Eicha followed by Kinot, and on Tisha B’Av Day - Thursday, July 30, at 8:00 AM for a virtual communal

davening, including the reading of Kinot. Our davening will be led by Rabbi Eli Babich and

Cantor Joseph Malovany through Zoom.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS THE CREATIVE PLAYSCHOOL - CLASS OF 2020

Reflecting on the last months of this school year, I can attest that this past springtime certainly did not resemble any of the last 29 years that I have directed the Playschool up on the 5th floor of FAS! This past March, when we first closed school we never could have imagined that the days would turn into weeks and then months and that we would have to close our doors for the remaining days of the school. Maintaining our connections to the children and families of our community became our most important goal. Our teachers rose to the occasion and stretched their areas of expertise as they programmed through FaceTime, WhatsApp, Email and Zoom! They sent letters and packages of art materials for fabulous projects to create with the children. We sang songs, read stories, practiced yoga, celebrated shabbat each week and even grew caterpillars into butterflies! We virtually cooked, baked challah, celebrated new babies, birthdays and Israel with our preschool families, redefining meaningful learning for very young children during this extremely challenging time.

The children, families and teachers of The Creative Playschool wish all the families of Fifth Avenue Synagogue a happy and healthy summer. G-d willing, we will see you in September up on the fifth floor! Paulette Stein Meyer Preschool Director

CONDOLENCES continued
