SELL OUT FOR THE “W”: The Dodgers tonight take on the Arizona
Diamondbacks in the middle game of a three-game series after last
night’s 8-7 loss in the series opener. The Dodgers’ losing streak against
the Snakes is now 10 games, which is the longest regular season winning
or losing streak for either team in the 21-year history of the series. Los
Angeles had lost eight consecutive games to the Diamondbacks on two
previous occasions in 2005 and 2012. Following tomorrow afternoon’s
series finale, the Dodgers travel to San Diego for the first time in 2018
and play three games with the Padres Monday-Wednesday before
returning home on Friday to face the Nationals in the beginning of a six-
game homestand vs. Washington (3 games) and Miami (3).
The 10-game regular season skid against the Diamondbacks
began on Aug. 29, 2017, but prior to that game, the Dodgers
were 48-22 (.686) in games against Arizona dating to the start
of the 2014 campaign, including a 27-8 mark at Dodger
Stadium (.771).
Today is the annual “Pups in the Park” parade, presented by
AvoDerm Natural and Nylabone. The event is sold out and the
parade for those dogs lucky enough to have tickets takes place
at 5:00 p.m. Dodger players Kiké Hernández and Justin
Turner will take part in the parade as official judges.
WARM IT UP, CHRIS: Dodger center fielder Chris Taylor belted a
leadoff homer to start things off for the Dodgers last night, his second
leadoff blast of the season and the fifth of his young career. The five
leadoff homers already ties him with Mike Griffin (1891-98), Carl
Furillo (1946-60) and Chase Utley (2015-18) for the seventh most in
Dodger history, one behind Todd Hollandworth’s six from 1995-2000.
The all-time list:
LEADOFF HOMERS, DODGER HISTORY – ALL-TIME
Davey Lopes 28
Rafael Furcal 14
Johnny Frederick 10
Jim Gilliam 9
Steve Sax 7
Todd Hollandsworth 6
Chris Taylor 5

SCORE FIRST, SCORE OFTEN: According to STATS, LLC, the
Dodgers are now 0-7 this season when allowing the opposing team to
score first.
NO FREEBIES: The Dodgers’ 3.71 ERA ranks ninth in the NL, but
they are making the opposition earn it as their 31 walks are the fewest in
the league. The only team in baseball to issue fewer free passes than the
Dodgers are the Oakland A’s, who have walked 29 hitters.
SPENT A LITTLE TIME ON THE HILL: Dodger left-hander Rich
Hill takes the mound tonight for his third start of 2018, following a
victory against the Giants on April 1 (6.0 IP, 0 ER) and a no decision in
San Francisco last Saturday (4.0 IP, 3 ER). Hill is in his third season
with the Dodgers after a trade deadline acquisition with Oakland in
2016. In 2017, Hill posted a 12-8 record with a 3.32 ERA (50 ER/135.2
IP) and struck out 166 batters against just 49 walks, averaging 11.01
strikeout per nine innings and posting a 3.39 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In
119 career Major League starts, he has gone 46-34 with a 3.90 ERA and
has limited batters to a .223 average. The southpaw held opposing right-
handed batters to a .190 mark last year, which ranked sixth lowest in the
Majors in 2017.
Hill is 1-5 with a 4.78 ERA (26 ER/49.0 IP) in nine career
starts (five with Los Angeles) against the Diamondbacks. Last
season, Hill couldn’t muster a win vs. Arizona, going 0-3 with
a 5.02 ERA (11 ER/19.2 IP) in four starts, despite holding the
Snakes to a .230 average while striking out 24 against just four
walks. In three starts vs. Arizona at Dodger Stadium last
season, Hill posted a 2.81 ERA (5 ER/16.0 IP), including a 7.0-
inning start on Juy 6 in which he allowed just one run on two
hits while striking out nine.
ALWAYS THE MOST SPECIAL OF DAYS: Tomorrow afternoon,
the Dodgers, along with all of Major League Baseball, will celebrate the
71st anniversary of the day Hall of Famer and Civil Rights pioneer
Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier and made his big league
debut. Yesterday, the club kicked off the festivities by hosting “Breaking
Barriers: A Legacy of Jackie Robinson” for 100 students from John Muir
High School (Jackie Robinson’s alma mater), Garfield High School and
others from select LAUSD schools, where students heard from leaders
in sports, science and business (including Dodger skipper Dave
Roberts) who have hit notable milestones in their careers.
The first 40,000 fans attending tomorrow’s game will receive
a special Jackie Robinson Day jersey, presented by Bank of
America.
Special pregame ceremonies will include several Jackie
Robinson Foundation scholars as well as a few special guests,
while all on-field personnel will wear No. 42 throughout Major
League Baseball for the 13th consecutive season.
MAKING A COMEBACK: On Wednesday, Baseball Commissioner
Robert D. Manfred, Jr. announced at a press conference at Dodger
Stadium that Major League Baseball has awarded the 2020 All-Star
Game Presented by Mastercard and accompanying All-Star Week
festivities to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2020 Midsummer Classic,
which will be the 91st edition in the event’s history, will make its return
to Los Angeles for the first time since 1980. This will mark the fourth
time in franchise history that the Dodgers will hold the Midsummer
Classic, including the third time in Los Angeles and the second at
Dodger Stadium. Prior to the 1980 All-Star Game, the Dodgers played
host to the Midsummer Classic in 1959 at the Los Angeles Memorial
Coliseum and in 1949 at Ebbets Field.
I’VE GOT SIX ON IT: The Dodger lineup has been scuffling of late
offensively, hitting just .238 as a team, which is tied for seventh in the
National League. However, the club has received excellent production
out of the No. 6 hole thus far:
MLB, Highest On-Base Pct. From 6th Spot – 2018
Seattle Mariners .432
Los Angeles Dodgers .429 (21/49)
New York Mets .420
Pittsburgh Pirates .418
L.A. Angels .418 SOURCE: STATS, LLC
Seven different Dodgers have started in the No. 6 spot in the
order this season, but the bulk of those starts have gone to Matt
Kemp (five), who’s hitting .333 (12-for-36) with a homer and
three doubles on the young season. Kemp is a lifetime .294
hitter against the Diamondbacks and his 35 homers are tied
with Adrían González for the most among active players vs.
Arizona.
CONTACT HIGH: Dodger third baseman Logan Forsythe ranks
among the league leaders when it comes to the percentage of his swings
put in play:
NL, Highest Pct. of Swings Put in Play – 2018
(qualifying batters)
DJ LeMahieu, Col 59.8
Logan Forsythe, LAD 56.7 (38/67) (3rd, MLB)
