KRINGAS KRONICLE

Hope Everyone is enjoying the sum-mer! I am looking forward to seeing you again at our September 10th meeting in Elmhurst at Market Table Catering and Events; this is NOT a restaurant. They are open only for private parties and they offer a unique culinary experience with onsite chefs and a private setting for us.

Now, on to our Tech Symposium Oc-tober 8th in Elk Grove Village. We are diving into the hot topic of Cosmetic Science in the Digital Age! Multiple speakers, of various topics, will offer tools to assist in closer connections to an evolving customer, as purchases in-crease on interactive digital platforms.

E-Commerce and Social media have disrupted the way brands connect with consumers. Traditional brick and mor-tar stores are being replaced by digi-tal sales. We will have social media experts that specialize in promoting cosmetics, guide us to maximize those platforms. We will uncover new tools in design of experiments. We will look at digital testing of cosmetic and smudge proof cosmetics. We will look at what influences audiences to buy and the digital tools, toys, the troubles it can create as technology evolves. We will inform you on the science of Blue Light and much, much more.

The MWSCC is Run by Volunteers!

Volunteers are a tremendous resource and once again, I beg you to consider volunteering to help the MWSCC.Did you know it’s possible to volunteer virtually? We will help match you to the right project!

We need volunteers to fill the follow-ing positions:

BOD: Chair- Elect Position Opening: The position of Chair-elect is a learning position for the person who will as-sume Chapter leadership at the conclu-sion of the Chair’s term.

Program Chair: Coordinates and chooses the event topics and speakers

Housing Chair: Venue booking and meal management

Various: Tech Symposium; Scholar-ship; Teamworks, Social Night, Next-Gen

On Behalf of the BOD and Committee Members I want to thank all of you who participate in SCC and we want to continue to see you at our monthly meetings, symposiums, Trade shows, Social nights, Next Gen (mentoring events), National SCC events, & Team-works! Let’s continue to make fond memories, friendships and educational experiences our companies can all be proud of! Please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

A common claim I see about cosmetics and fragrances in particular is that there is a “fragrance loophole” that allows cosmetic companies to fill their formulas with toxic chemicals without listing them. The idea is that if something is part of a fragrance it is secret and can be listed on the label simply as “Fragrance” (or Parfum if you happen to be in a French speaking country). While this claim is technically true, it’s misleading in a couple of different ways.

Some fragrance ingredients are listed In the EU, there is a list of 26 ingredients in fragrances that are known allergens. It is a requirement that companies list out any of these ingredients on their labels if they are included in their products. So, the ingredients that represent the biggest risk to consumers are specifically listed out on ingredient labels. This is not a strict requirement in the US however, all the biggest cosmetic companies do this as a matter of course. Smaller US companies often ignore this step which is why I think people who are sensitive to fragrance ingredients should stick to purchasing products from large companies.

There are safety limits on ingredients in fragrances The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) sets safety limits on ingredients used in fragrances. All the legitimate fragrance houses

in the world adhere to the safety limits as published by IFRA. This is a legal requirement in the EU and it is something that companies follow in the US. Any product you use that has fragrance (especially if it is from a large company) uses ingredients that have been safety tested.

All ingredients in fragrances While the fragrance loophole technically exists, some companies have still found it helpful from a marketing standpoint to let consumers see all the ingredients in their fragrances. You can see every ingredient in the fragrances used in products by Unilever and by P&G.

Real reason for the loopholeThe reason the loophole was created in the 1970’s was because fragrance houses didn’t want their trade secrets to be shared with competitors. But a more important reason is because fragrances are made up of dozens or even hundreds of ingredients. If all the ingredients were listed on the container the ingredient lists would become too long and unhelpful to consumers. There is no nefarious conspiracy by cosmetic companies to expose consumers to dangerous chemicals through the fragrance. The main reason the fragrance loophole exists is because it’s not practical to list all the ingredients for fragrance on the container and having that information won’t help consumers anyway.

Launched in 2015 by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, the NextGen Initiative was created to help young professionals and students further their education to attain successful and rewarding careers. Bridging the gap between young professionals and established professionals is at the heart of this critical initiative. Brought about by a need to align education and training with workforce needs, our mission is to attract, educate and provide for the advancement of our members.
