AROUNDTHE BUILDING

Just in Case…Elevator Emergency Dos and Don’tsHere’s what to do, and what not do, if you become stuck inside an elevator cab:

DO…

• Press the help button which is located beneath the buttons for the floors. This buttonwill connect you to the Security Desk.

• Stand close to the panel when the phone is answered and you are talking or the officerwill not be able to hear you clearly.

• Inform Security that your elevator has stopped and you are trapped inside. The SecurityDesk will then dispatch an officer to your elevator who can talk to you through the door.

• Know that Security will then contact our contracted elevator repair company for assistance.

• Feel free to push the help button again, should you become disconnected or if you becomeuncomfortable waiting for Security to call you back.

DON’T…

• Panic. Elevators are the safest mode of transportation in the world. The majority of elevatorproblems are as simple as a piece of gravel becoming lodged in the lower door track. Thiscan stop the door from automatically opening. Elevators only fall in the movies!!

• Attempt to pry open the doors to get out. You could be half way out when the elevatorstarts again, which could cause life threatening injuries.

On average it takes less than two minutes after the repair person arrives to get the elevatoroperational again. Should you become stuck at 10 in the morning, you can normally expect tobe out and on your way in about 10 minutes. If you get stuck at 10 at night, you could bethere for a minimum of 20 minutes as the on-call technician may have to come fromanother location.

Earth Day is Growing!!Five hundred trees will be planted in Calgary using the seedlings we gave awayat our four downtown properties on Earth Day. While the individual seedlingsare currently small, their impact will be huge.

When you plant your tree, you are making an important contribution tothe environment as trees provide oxygen, improve air quality, conservewater, preserve soil, and support wildlife. And during the process ofphotosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygenwe breathe. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, oneacre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts outfour tons of oxygen, enough to meet the annual needs of18 people!

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to the air webreathe by planting your tree!

A Wish for RylanWe annually donate all of the pop cans/bottles and milkcartons from this building and the three other downtownbuildings we manage to the Children’s Wish Foundationof Alberta. Last year we raised nearly $30,000 and asa result were able to grant the wishes of three children, one of whom is featured below.

So far this year, we have already raised almost $15,000for this charity through our building Pop Can RecyclingProgram. Please continue to keep the empties coming, and we will continue to keep you up to date on theamount collected in future issues of the newsletter.

Here is the story of one of the children whose wish came true thanks to your participation…

Rylan is a fun loving, energetic three year old who loves anything to do with cars. He alsohas some very serious health related complications for which he has spent most of hislife in a hospital.

Rylan suffers from Epilepsy, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and a very rare pancreaticdeficiency most common in German Shepherds and rarely seen in humans. Because hisbody cannot absorb fat and provide the necessary vitamins, he is on a feeding tube, takes10 different types of medication continuously and needs to manually ingest his requiredvitamins. Due to the pancreatic deficiency he also has to be watched for diabetic shockwhen his body stops producing insulin. In the past couple of months he has gone into three diabetic comas.

Rylan’s health is very fragile and there is no treatment for his rare disease. When hispancreas fails he will be eligible for a transplant that will hopefully extend his life.

Rylan’s mother Melanie was very emotional when told he would have his wish granted. She expressed her gratitude and amazement with the kindness of strangers, and said thatknowing there is this kind of support has made a world of difference for the entire family.

When asked about his wish, Rylan said: “I want to see McQueen.” McQueen is a characterin the Disney movie Cars. In May, Rylan, along with his big sister and his parents, went toDisney World where they spent an action packed week enjoying all the sights and soundswhile spending some much needed quality time together.

Wine and Beer Tastinga Great Success! This annual May event drew a crowdof tenants from our building as well asBP Centre and Jamieson Place. Theyenjoyed hors d’oeuvres and live musicwhile sampling a selection of 19 differentwines and beer. Proceeds of $1400 fromticket sales were donated to Inn FromThe Cold, a Calgary based charity thatprovides emergency shelter, supportand programs to homeless children, families, and others in need.
