HISTORY OF THE 4TH OF JULY

On July 4, 1776, the 13 colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on the fourth of July, also known as Inde-pendence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event. SALT

Recommendation: 2300 milligrams (mg) of sodium/day. Recommendation for people more than 40 years of age, Afri-can Americans, and those suffering from high blood pressure: 1500 milligrams (mg) of sodium/day. Read the Nutrition Facts Label. Look

for foods with 5% Daily Value (DV) or less. A sodium content of 20% DV or more is high.

Buy low-sodium products at the grocery store. Look for “low sodium”, “reduced sodium”, or “no salt added” labels on food products.

Buy fresh foods as much as possible. Avoid packaged and processed foods.

Learn to season with herbs and spices. Prepare as much food as possible

yourself without the salt shaker. What is the harm? Too much sodium has been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Did you know 50% more sodium is consumed by Americans on a daily basis than recommended.

GET ACTIVE

Get your Senior loved one active today! Family

members hear many reasons from seniors as to

why they are not active:

It’s boring.

It doesn’t feel good.

It makes my arthritic joints hurt.

It takes too much time.

However, they need physical activity more to-

day than they care to admit. In fact, without

physical exercise they will continue to suffer

the loss of strength and stamina. Keeping

Young at Heart aerobic activity, which is cardi-

orespiratory or cardiovascular endurance activ-

ity, is also important. It keeps the heart strong,

lowers blood pressure, and relieves anxiety and

depression. Strength training is recommended

for all adults, but it is a vital link to health for

older adults. The reason is that strength train-

ing prevents sarcopenia, the muscle deteriora-

tion that comes with aging, and also helps

maintain bone mass.

PREVENTING SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS

As we age, our vision changes and that loss of vision can lead to serious safety issues. Accidents at home rank among the leading causes of death and injury among seniors. According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, one out of four adults age 65 and older has a bad fall every year. Modifications prevent potential slips and trips.

De-Clutter—We all know our elderly loved ones tend to collect more items than they need over the years.

The first step is to remove debris from walking areas

and stairs to make sure your senior has a clear path-

way when moving around their home.

Secure—Loose rugs and lifted carpet create a huge fall

risk. Secure loose rugs and carpets around the home

to make sure they are set in place. Secure loose rugs

with double-sided tape or slip resistant backing.

Lighting—Our vision changes as we age making prop-er lighting in the home vital for senior safety. The

best lighting for aging eyes is “up lighting” meaning

the light goes up, bounces off the ceiling, and comes

back down.

Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emer-gency treatment is not provided. Warning signs vary but may include the following: Extremely high body temperature (above

103°F) Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating) Rapid, strong pulse Throbbing headache Dizziness Nausea Heat exhaustion If you feel ill due to the heat, take immediate steps to cool off and see a doctor or call 911.
