CLOVER KIDS’ CORNER

If You Plant It, They Will Come!

Caterpillars are the perfect introductory insect to the child who is a little squeamish of bugs. Caterpillars don’t bite, pinch or sting! While flowers attract butterflies, if you want caterpillars, you need to plant food sources. You can make this happen almost effortlessly at your home. The black swallowtail caterpillar loves parsley — flat– or curly-leafed varieties. Plant enough for your own use and then plant extra for the caterpillars. A simple container garden of parsley is all you need in addition to your flowering garden. Female black swallowtail butterfly species will sip nectar from nearby flowers, and drop little golden eggs on leaves of the parsley plant. Keep watch on the eggs. In a week or so, you’ll have hungry little caterpillars to enjoy through much of the summer.
