The CPCUProfessional Commitment
As a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter:
I shall strive at all times
to live by the highest standards
of professional conduct;
I shall strive to ascertain
and understand the needs of others
and place their interests above my own;
and
I shall strive to maintain and
uphold a standard of honor and
integrity that will reflect credit on my
profession and on the CPCU designation.
The President’s Message
Dear Fellow CPCUs,
Thank you for electing me your 2015 Chapter President. For those who don’t know me personally, I have been employed in the insurance industry for 29 years, primarily in personal lines claims. I earned the CPCU designation in 1995 and had the good fortune to celebrate with thousands of classmates in Hawaii.
This Chapter started in 1962 when seven men had a vision to create one of the finest CPCU chapters in the country. We have grown considerably since our inception, having more than 200 members at the close of 2014. The vision of our founders was a strong foundation on which we continue to build. It is through our member’s contributions and commitments to this Chapter that we have been able to remain strong over the past 53 years.
As many of you already know, the CPCU Society has so much to offer its members. Webinars are offered regularly and focus on professional development and industry trends. Interest groups provide a resource for members’ specific areas of concentration in the industry. Social media connections such as Linked In offer participation in countrywide discussions on trending issues.
Time has changed the way we communicate and process information, build relationships and establish professional connections, but the foundation remains strong. If we are to continue to stand up to the sands of time we need to continually expand our vision. We need to look for new and innovative ways to recruit and retain new members to ensure the legacy of this chapter. This is why our objective for 2015 is one of renewal. I encourage everyone to not just ride the wave of change but to be an integral part of its flow and direction. You can do this through involvement in the chapter on the local and/or national level. Make a commitment to come to a meeting this year to show your support and appreciation of those who have built this chapter over the last 53 years and count yourself among those who will make the choice to be part of the next 53 years and more!
Thank you for your continuing support. I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming event.
Sincerely,
Melissa A. JadinMelissa A. Jadin, CPCURhode Island Chapter President

On November 8, 1962, Paul McLaughlin, Davies Bissett, Jr., Donald Goodby, Christopher Kempf, William Price, Leonard Sweet and Albert Pearson submitted a petition to the board of directors of the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters for permission to create the “Rhode Island Chapter.”

During the past 50 years, we have been proud of the many awards received under the leadership of various presidents, including the “President’s Award” under Andy Erickson, 1986-1987, Meredith Taylor, 1991-1992, and the “Circle of Excellence” awards each year since 2002.

Excellence Through Education
The Society of CPCU and its members have long recognized the important role that education plays in the lives of those committed to the highest standards of professionalism. In 1986, through the efforts of President Andrew M. Erickson, CPCU, the Rhode Island Chapter of CPCU established the Rhode Island CPCU Scholarship Fund. This program fosters both education and excellence through the awarding of scholarships to college students from families employed within the Rhode Island insurance community, based on demonstrated excellence in academic performance. All contributions are tax-deductible and directly increase the endowment principal. Scholarships have been awarded annually since the inception of the fund. In 2014, a total of $21,000 was awarded to seven exceptional students. Since its beginning, the fund has awarded $227,000 to 126 recipients. Our current goal is to provide even greater service to the Rhode Island insurance community by being able to continue to increase our scholarship amounts to deserving students each year. To do so will require a significant increase in the size of the Rhode Island CPCU Scholarship Fund, and we earnestly request your support. Checks payable to Rhode Island CPCU Scholarship Fund may be sent to Stefvan Drezek, CPCU, c/o Amica Mutual Insurance Company, PO Box 6008, Providence, RI 02940-6008. For information about how to make a donation or to apply for a scholarship, please visit the RI CPCU Scholarship Fund website: https://rhodeisland.cpcusociety.org/rhode-island-cpcu-scholarship-fund-information.
