Golf Pro News Continued:

Super Saturday # 2 The second round of competition for Super Saturday is scheduled for April 15th. If you missed the March round, you can still get started and have plenty of time to post three scores (gross & net) for the season. Entry fee is $30 for the entire season, plus cart fees. We have three divisions based on tee colors (purple, white, red). Please call the golf shop by Thursday, April 13th to sign-up. Sandy Minder won the Low net Field pr ize for the March competition. Congratulations! Couples Twilight Our first couple’s twilight 9-hole competition of the season takes place on Friday, April 21st. Beginning at 6pm with a shotgun start, we will do our standard captain’s choice format, pairing two couples together to form each team. Following play, we will gather at Sole’ for the winners to “get dinner.” Entry fee is only $30 per couple for carts and the prize fund. Call the golf shop to sign up for this evening of fun! Hole-In-One: JOYCE DOSS Congratulations to Joyce Doss for scoring her first career hole-in-one on the fourth hole at The Walker Course on Wednesday, March 8th. Playing in the opening day event with the Ladies Association, Mrs. Doss used a pitching wedge to score her ace on the 100-yard par three. Witnessing the historic shot were Daphne Par-ker, Kathy Hughes, and Kandace Schatz. Mrs. Doss will share the Ladies Golf Association HIO Jackpot with any other aces by their members this season. Unfortunately, she was NOT a member of the Member Hole-In-One Club, so the “members only” jackpot continues to build. The current jackpot payout for the next ace is $300.00. If you have not joined, you better hurry….they come in threes. Great shot Mrs. Doss! Rest In Peace Ed Legette, a char ter member of The Walker Course, passed away on Wednesday, March 9 th. Mr. Legette was an active member playing almost all member tournaments as long as his health permitted. Mr. Legette was retired from Duke Energy. His quiet smile will be missed!

DON GARRETT, CGCS SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

March Status The hard freeze at mid-month was a concern, when two nights in the mid 20’s knocked back all of the bermudagrass. The fairways were at 75% green up and I was afraid that this setback would take a while to recover from. But, by month end, we are at nearly 100% green up on the fairways after several days where the highs reached the 80’s. The same goes for the greens, although they have been a little slower to get back to active growth. We did slightly lower the mowing height at the end of the month to maintain green speed. A course wide fertilizer application was applied on the 20th. A slow release product was used that will feed the turf for several months. Impregnated on the fertilizer was our spring pre-emergent herbicide. Heavy play and the early growth of the bermudagrass has us a bit behind on a few things, but we hope to get caught up in April. April Goals

During April, we begin more routine mowing and maintenance practices and less project type work. We will be brushing, rolling and making light and frequent applications of topdressing to the greens. We will also be treating the course for fire ants and spreading mulch in the remaining beds.

Proper Filling of Divots We have been going through a lot of the green divot sand which tells me the membership has been doing a great job of filling divots. Please be sure you are filling divots properly. The proper way is to fill the divot to ground level (Picture 1). Pour a little into the divot mark and smooth with your foot. However, I notice many divots that are overfilled (Picture 2). Overfilling the divots causes three issues.

First, it is wasteful. The green divot sand is expensive. While it doesn’t contain any seed or fertilizer, it must be kiln dried to be painted green for aesthetic purposes. The kiln drying helps to kill any weed seeds in the sand to keep from spreading weeds throughout the course. Transportation costs are high as well, using more than necessary is costly.

Second, leaving a pile of sand in the fairway means someone else could be faced with a bad lie. Who wants to hits a blast shot from a pile of sand in the fairway! Be sure to smooth the sand level with your foot.

Third, running over a pile of sand with a mower dulls the blades. Mowers must be kept sharp, and we set the mow-ing height to the thousandth of an inch. Hitting piles of sand dulls the blades prematurely and can result in a poor cut.
