Debating Affordable Housing: Inclusionary Zoning and Alternative Housing Strategies As most New Yorkers will

tell you, the lack of affordable housing is one of the formidable problems facing the city. Mayor de Blasio has

promised to deliver 200,000 units of affordable housing over the next decade and is relying on “mandatory

inclusionary zoning” to achieve that aim. But affordable housing in NYC is far from an open-and-shut case. Housing

justice activists and scholars will address these questions at an open-discussion-style event: What is the state of

affordable housing in New York? Could mandatory inclusionary zoning work? What are the other alternatives thatthe city could pursue? What would a more radical approach to affordable housing look like? With speakers from

Picture the Homeless, Met Council, ANHD, and others. At Pratt Manhattan, 144 W. 14th

 Street. RSVP

College Guide for Immigrant Parents / a “Train-the-Trainer” Workshop Barriers to college for children-of-

immigrants are systemic in nature and not isolated personal problems related to their specific family. This

workshop will help to develop a sense that, despite these barriers, college is attainable for their family; and will

help them to view their fellow parents as resources to collectively address the systemic barriers. Facilitators will

learn how to train parents in the basics of financial aid and college selection; create a team for support and help;

visit some colleges with your children; ask for specialized help from your school or an outside organization.

Trainers will receive a Guide, developed in partnership with many member community organizations, which

provides immigrant parents with an easy-to-read entry point into a complicated process. The Guide addresses

immigrant parents’ specific concerns raised in focus groups conducted across the City, and presents expert advice

in the format of engaging personal stories of immigrant families together with action-oriented guidance that

shows parents how to do what is recommended. The guide is written at the 6th

grade reading level and will be

available in English, Chinese, Spanish, Bengali, Arabic, & Haitian Creole. At the New York Immigration Coalition

Salsa, Shamrocks & Blues 5k Race Formerly known as the “Coogan’s Salsa, Blues & Shamrocks 5k,” we’ve changed

the name of this race to truly celebrate the vibrant neighborhood in which it takes place. Upper manhattan’s divers

Fort Tryon Park and the historic Cloisters, runners are serenaded by musical groups playing  – you guessed it! –

salsa, blues and Irish folk music, plus gospel, meringue, and jazz! A race within the race honors Captain Frederich

Ill, Jr., a local firefighter who lost his life on 9/11. Races for youngster ages 2-12 between 25 yards and a half-mile

The Cornerstone Chorale is a community chorus in the Washington Heights/Inwood neighborhoods. We rehearse

on Monday nights in season and performs several concerts annually. We are hoping to do as our next project

Mozart’s soaring and moving Requiem, but to do so we need a large choir to balance out the orchestra which will

accompany the singers. The Chorale especially needs tenors, basses and sopranos, but all are welcome to audition.

For more information or to arrange for an audition, please call or email Musical Director Richard Stout:
