On this Sunday we wear rose colored vestments. We light the

rose colored candle. This color signifies that we are rejoicing

because the source of our salvation, the birth the Savior, is

near. At one time in our Church’s history, Advent was a

greater penitential season; the faithful fasted, abstained, and

participated in popular prayer. Gaudete Sunday was a

reminder that we are preparing for two events: the first is the

birth of Jesus, which we greet with joy; the second, his coming

in glory to judge “the living and the dead” that we anticipate

with preparing ourselves to meet the Lord. Our Advent season calls us to

prepare the way of the Lord both in a material way as well as a spiritual way.

We can interrogate ourselves by asking if our daily life gives witness to the fact

that God has given his life so that our sins will not poison our actions. Are we

preparing for more than a festive family gathering at or around Christmas? In

a spirit of “peace on earth,” have I tried to cultivate an inner peace with God

that enables me to be a “peace maker” in my daily life? Have I encouraged, by

prayer and invitation, those friends and relatives who are no longer practicing

their faith to come home? What more can I do to love God and give him honor?

If I know the Gospel, I will live the Gospel; realize that you’re the only Gospel

some will read today.

Remember that our celebration of the Sacrament of forgiveness is on Monday,

December 19th at 7:00 PM.

Gaudete Sunday

Words from

Father Norm

What is a ‘Gathered Youth Night?’

Every other Sunday night, from 6:00-8:30

PM, our high school teens are invited to join

us in the Social Hall for fun, fellowship and

food. On these nights we will ‘gather’ as we

get to know one another, share a meal,

worship together and learn a little bit more

about our faith. Each night will have a main

topic or ‘theme’ which will be our focus for

the evening in small and large groups.

What is a ‘White Elephant Party?’

On the night of December 18th, everyone

should bring a gift to exchange...something

you already have in your house that you don’t

necessarily want anymore. This ‘gift’ should

be nicely wrapped and ready to be exchanged.

We will play a card game to distribute the

gifts.

What’s Happening in Religious Education

The season of Advent is upon us. In Religious Education, that brings choir practices for Sunset

of Troy, Christmas craft projects for Moms and Dads, Advent wreaths and prayers...you know,

all the usual activities that take place at this time of year.

There are many things we do to get ourselves ready for Christmas: we purchase gifts, prepare

Christmas cards, and decorate our homes. During Advent, a time of preparation, we also

prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus and the celebration of

Christmas. One way we prepare is participating in the Sacrament of

Reconciliation. At St. Elizabeth Ann Seton we are offering quite a few

opportunities for you to receive the Sacrament. In addition to our

weekly Saturday afternoons at 4:30 PM, we have a Penance Service on

Monday, December 19th at 7:00 PM. You and your family may

choose to participate in the communal celebration of the sacrament, or

you may seek out the sacrament on an individual basis.

Question of the Week for Youth

In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus send a message to John that

“the blind are regaining their sight, the

lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf

hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have

the good news proclaimed to them. And

blessed is the one who takes no offense at

me.”

Who are the people today who are

waiting for the Messiah?

The Third Sunday of Advent or What is ‘Gaudete Sunday’? And why did we change to Pink? Gaudete Sunday gets its name from the opening prayer of the Mass for this day, where we

pray, "Gaudete in Domino semper" (Rejoice in the Lord always). So in the midst of Advent

fasting and devotions, we rejoice because the time we have been preparing for is almost at

hand. You may see pink/rose colored vestments and additions to the church environment due

to this special Sunday. The shift in color is to remind us of the JOY that Christ will soon be

here.

A day like this is always good to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. The life of a

Christian is not always easy, but it is one of joy. If we keep our heads bowed too long, no one will be able to see

the smiles on our faces.

The New Evangelization calls us to spread the good news with a joy that can be infectious. This past week at a

conference for Youth Ministry, I stopped at a booth set up by an order of sisters who were promoting vocations.

I couldn't help but to notice of how much they laughed and how they smiled. I thought, "Who wouldn't want to

see what they are about?" Does your joy in our Lord serve as an invitation for others to seek Him out?

May the joy of the Lord be yours on this Gaudete Sunday! As the song says, “The Lord is coming, soon and

very soon!”

Bible Study: Acts of the Apostles

Join us for this 20 week bible study

on the Acts of the Apostles. The

book of Acts describes the formation

of the church and shows how

Christ’s Kingdom on Earth is

empowered to carry out His work in

the world. The Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit,

teaches, preaches and heals in the same way that

Jesus did. The Acts of the Apostles provides the

framework for understanding the rest of the New

Testament.

Each week’s lesson includes readings from scripture, a

group discussion, and a 50 minute video commentary

by Jeff Cavins (who has been featured on EWTN).

Cost: There is no charge to attend. Simply bring your

Bible, or one will be provided during each class. A

donation of $10 is suggested to offset the cost of the

videos.

Dates: Tuesday evenings, starting November

29th-May 9th, 2017

Times: 7:00-8:30 PM

Location: SEAS Classroom 3&4

Join us as your schedule permits.

To sign up, contact the Parish Office, or Rob Pelliccia

at (248) 828-3539 or [email protected].

Another Successful SOS

We completed another very successful year hosting the

homeless at our parish from November 20th through

27th. Two hundred and fifty-three volunteers

contributed their time, talent or treasure. Volunteers

worked 1,837 hours and signed up for over 600 line

items. This is just an incredible participation rate for

a parish of our size. Your generosity and willingness to

jump-in to fill a need made our coordinating job so

much easier. If you haven’t had a chance to interact

with the homeless in our area, we encourage you to

sign-up next year for one of the many jobs that have

direct contact with our guests. The only requirement

is to attend a free “Protecting God’s Children” class

and fill-out a background check. We think you will

find it a very rewarding experience.

Children as young as six years old were able to

participate this year in a limited program. We had as

many as eight homeless children some nights and they

enjoyed playing with other children. We hope to

continue to provide opportunities for the children of

our parish to participate in helping the homeless.

Thanks to all of the volunteers, Father Norm, Deacon

Greg, the parish staff, all of the many job coordinators,

Taco Loco, and Kim’s restaurant for their help in

making this project a success. We are so blessed to

have so many people willing to support this project.

Stewardship Thoughts (from the AOD)

Today’s Scripture readings clearly express the joy and

healing that we, and the entire world, will undergo

with the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. St.

Matthew’s Gospel emphasizes the wondrous deeds of

Jesus’ earthly ministry: the blind see, the crippled walk,

lepers are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead are

raised to new life, and the poor are made rich with the

Good News. As Christian stewards, we are challenged

to continue Christ’s ministry through the Church and

to the world. This Advent, in the spirit of

evangelization, invite a neighbor or family member who

has not been to church for a while to join you for the

Eucharistic celebration of the Mass.

CSA: Christian Stewardship

Last month, the Department of Development and

Stewardship distributed “Stewardship Thoughts,”

weekly reflections for the readings in the Sunday

Liturgy of the Word in Cycle A, for parishes to include

in their bulletins.

Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help the

Archdiocese of Detroit provide materials as well as

guidance on Christian stewardship education. The

Stewardship Thoughts are an addition to the

department’s award-winning stewardship education

manual, Called by Christ, Gifted by the Spirit. They

are designed to encourage reflection on the grace God

gives to each of us through His gifts of time, talent,

and treasure, and how we are to “steward” those gifts

to serve Him in advancing His kingdom on earth.

Stewardship Thoughts are also posted to the Catholic

Services Appeal’s Facebook and Twitter accounts each

Friday morning. Christian stewards are encouraged to

share and Retweet them to their social media

connections.

For more information about CSA-funded ministries,

programs, and services, please go to www.AOD.org.

Please join us this Advent at the National Shrine of

the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak at the corner of

12 Mile and Woodward, every Wednesday at 7:00

PM for half an hour to help prepare for our Lord's

coming. Get away from the distractions of the season

and connect with the Lord and relax in His presence.

Every Wednesday we hear the "good news"

proclaimed, a short reflection, beautiful music and

(many times) a testimony from an attendee telling us

all what a difference knowing Christ has made in their

lives. On the last Wednesday of the month we have a

full mass in which the priest uses the homily to explain

the mass, so we can grow deeper in our faith. Please

join us, all are welcomed. Feel free to bring a friend,

a fallen away Catholic, a non-Catholic, someone

seeking...all our welcomed!

We gather afterwards for light refreshments and to

make new friends.

Respect Life will be holding an on-going Baby Shower to benefit Abigayle

Ministries, a local crisis pregnancy center. It is not enough that we pray to end

abortion, and ask our legislators to pass laws to end abortion. We must help

women who are pregnant and scared and believe that they have no other option.

Donations of new or gently used baby clothing can be placed in the crib in the

parish hall. Baby food, formula, diapers and other baby necessities are also welcome. Unfortunately, we cannot

accept stuffed animal toys. Thank you in advance for your generous support.
