ACTIVE MINDS Active Minds (activeminds.com) expands lives and minds by providing outstanding educational programs across Denver.

The Nuremberg Trials Thursday, January 12, 6:45 p.m. @ Sam Gary Seventy years after the world brought charges against individuals for their actions in World War II, crimes against humanity are still part of the fabric of the world in which we live (ISIS, Syria, etc). We’ll take a look back at the Nuremberg Trials and trace their impact on the creation of the International Criminal Court and how the world views war crimes. We will discuss how this legacy applies to events in the modern world and the current challenges of implementing this area of international law. This program is brought to you by the Stapleton Master Community Association.

The Supreme Court Saturday, January 14, 1-2 p.m. @ Central Library, Floor 1, Burnham Hoyt Book Club Room The unexpected death of Antonin Scalia has created one of the most charged political events in a generation. With the recent Presidential election and the future of a divided court hanging in the balance, the stakes couldn’t be higher. We’ll examine the current dynamics surrounding filling a vacancy on the highest court in the land and look at past confirmations in order to better understand the intricacies of the process.

The Story of Salt Thursday, January 19, 3-4 p.m. @ Ross-University Hills The word “salary” comes from “salt” and indicates the historic value placed on this important commodity. Salt was used as a method of trade and currency and its role in the history of civilization cannot be overstated. Learn the story of salt, from its key role in preserving food, to its influence in political conflict, to modern angles including gourmet salt and health concerns surrounding high blood pressure. It’s a salty tale indeed!

Football Thursday, January 26, 6:45 p.m. @ Sam Gary The most popular sport in America, football, is both entertain-ment and big business. We’ll trace the history of the game from Johnny Unitas to Peyton Manning, telling a few of the great stories of the game along the way. We’ll also cover some of the sport’s current challenges and opportunities, including player concussions and the rise of fantasy football. This program is brought to you by the Stapleton Master Community Association.

These include Susan Shelby Magoffin’s diary, written in 1846 and 1847, and Lieutenant James Abert’s 19th century drawings of Bent’s Old Fort and Owl Woman, who was William Bent’s Cheyenne wife.

A Conversation about Grief Wednesday, January 18, 4 p.m. @ Park Hill When loss occurs, it’s common for people to feel lost and left wondering if they are losing their sanity. Join bereavement counselors Whitney Haney and Lauren Mininger from Denver Hospice as they dispel myths about the grief journey and give hands-on experience that may help you better understand and cope with your grief.
