Directors Notes: Children’s Theater has always been a part of my Kinsella Theater curriculum, and I enjoy sharing theater with the younger grades. With more performance opportunities opening up this year, the Kinsella staff discussed adding a new fall tradition of Children’s Theater to our performance calendar. It is important to me, as a theater educator, to involve arts integration in our plays. The students created a film using the literacy and science vocabulary that our younger students are working on in their classes. This will allow the younger students to be able to make vocabulary connections when they see the play and the movie trailer that we created. I was also able to schedule pre-show workshops to enhance students’ prior knowledge before they see the show. The Literacy words we worked on are: setting, characters, gist, character traits, beginning, middle/problem and end/solution. Our play touches on animal habitats and how people need to respect both nature and animals while focusing on the need to work together as a team to solve problems. “All we need is patience. Everything comes to him who waits” -Owl
