Director’s Message

Jeremy Whitlock - Director & Choreographer

Welcome to “Chicago”!

It’s been an honour to “borrow” the genius of Bob Fosse for a few nights, as well as the great Fred Ebb

and John Kander.

When I took on this project, I knew I’d be working with some fantastic local talent, and I knew the show

would be a challenge to direct and choreograph – but I never expected to have as much fun as I did each

night through the four months of rehearsal: That’s due to my superb cast, musicians, and co-suffering produc-

tion team.

A lot of what happened ninety years ago in Chicago seems weird now (and oddly, far less inhibited), but I

was taken by the many parallels to today: I think Roxie and Velma would have done well in the world of

reality TV.

I’m deeply thankful to everyone who helped bring this show to you, but in particular I must acknowledge the

troopers that signed on when the sanity of it all was in question, forfeiting chunks of their life since well

before the auditions: my producer Deb Sullivan, stage manager Amanda Petch-Shaw, music director Gordon

Tapp, vocal director Laurie Jarbo, assistant choreographer Mac Jones, costume director Jane Barkley, and

especially my forgiving wife Beth and fatherless kids – Alex, Lucy and Evan.

I hope you have as much fun visiting “Chicago” as we had creating it, and if you feel like shimmy shaking or

whooping it up, please do. After all, “it’s just a noisy hall with a nightly brawl”.

And all that jazz!
