WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU CROSS AN OWL AND A MEMORY?

Nostalgia (n): pleasure and sadness that is caused by remembering something from the past and wishing that you could experience it again.

Well, with this special issue in hand, anyone can.

This magazine will guide FAU students and staff through the chaotic excitement that is Homecoming week. In it, everyone will see what makes FAU distinct. From narratives of past Homecoming kings to the 16-year-strong history of the Timucua Pageant, our school’s very own traditions keep on keeping on.

FAU staff reflects back on memories of Homecoming events past and their commemorations of yesteryear. With the surprises in store for this year’s Timucua Pageant and the

ever growing participation in our annual ExtravaCANza event, this Homecoming week is looking to be even more of an improvement than those of the past.

As special issue editor, I chose the theme “NostOWLgia” because of the feeling it evokes in all of us — the feeling hours, then days, then years, after winning the ExtravaCANza with only seconds to spare, or that rush when the Homecoming queen tiara is placed on your head, or your heart racing as the Owl Prowl headlining band’s lead singer touches your hand for a second the longing to be back in that moment again.

It’s 2013 now, a year for new Homecoming memories to develop. My challenge to the students reading this

magazine is to not sit idly, watching the events happen. Make some memories this fall. Memories that will carry into next year, when incoming freshmen begin to inquire about Homecoming nostOWLgia.

My hope is that, after reading the articles about traditions of the week, everyone will be able to relate them to past experiences here at FAU. Parents have lectured children on their glory days since collegiate life began. They talk about how they wish that they could go back and relive the hustle and bustle all over again. Before we know it, the legacy will be ours to continue. Children will soon hear nostOWLgia-inducing stories regarding these best four years at FAU. So live it up, fellow owls. Create stories worth telling.

UP

Special Issue Editor Stacey Pasternak explains why she chose ‘NostOWLgia’ as the theme for this year’s Homecoming Issue: looking back at the past and ahead to the

future

THE YEAR IS 2007. Apple released the first iPhone and iTouch, Myspace was

still a thing, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” had just been published, a freshly 15-year-old Miley Cyrus was at the height of her Hannah Montana tour, with tickets selling between $64 and $214 — pre-twerk, of course.

And Reel Big Fish performed at FAU. It was Nov. 15 in the Barry Kaye Auditorium. The show

featured ska/punk band Reel Big Fish, emo band Red

Jumpsuit Apparatus, and indie group Between the Trees. Six years later, the guys from Reel Big Fish — who’ve

been skanking since 1991 — are back at FAU for the third annual Owl Prowl Homecoming Concert.

They will be joined by reggae artist and cousin of Bob Marley, Alex Marley, as well as alternative reggae band Dirty Heads, who will be headlining the show.

The UP caught up with Reel Big Fish’s lead singer and guitarist Aaron Barrett via email to talk to him about what’s changed and what to expect at the concert. Here’s what he had to say:

REEL BIG FISH, HOMECOMING ACT 2007 AND 2013BIGGEST CHANGE SINCE 2007: “...our man boobs are more apparent, our double chins have

tripled. Other than that, same old same old!!”

UP: First off, how’s it going? Tell me about your day.AB: It’s going great! ... I tried to make an omelet but ruined it and ended up making scrambled eggs. AGAIN! Now I’m drunk on wine and cheese. Well probably just drunk from the wine, not the cheese.

UP: So last time you guys were at FAU, it was 2007. What’s changed since then? AB: We’ve had a few lineup changes since then, our beer bellies have become bigger, our hairlines have receded a bit more, our man boobs are more apparent, our double chins have tripled. Other than that, same old same old!! UP: Does performing at a college campus bring back any fond memories?AB: We’ve been playing college campuses for many years now and it’s always a blast! We always “bring the party” as they say. Do they say that? Usually it’s outside or in a gym where there is lots of room to dance but every now and then we’ll play in a seated theatre and that is just sooooooooo awkward. But good awkward. As for fond memories of going to college, I have none because I never went! Lucky for me this music thing worked out. So far! But I have many fond memories of playing colleges all over the country! That’s my story, cool right!? UP: You’re playing during Homecoming week. Do you have any good Homecoming stories?

AB: I never had a date to a school dance. EVER! I was such a loser! But now I’m in a ska band! UP: What’s going on in the life of RBF right now? AB: We’re always on tour all over the world playing ska music for people to dance to. We put out a new album last year called “Candy Coated Fury” and it’s a huge hit on the charts. Nowhere. UP: What do you want your fans to know when you play this show? What should they expect?AB: Expect a tornado of frantic, fast, fun ska music! Get ready to get sweaty and laugh your head off. Prepare to be amazed, stunned and stupefied by our musical mastery! You’ll dance, you’ll laugh, you’ll be mildly amused. You may be slightly entertained. We’re wild! We’re wacky! We’re from the ‘90s. UP: Any final thoughts? AB: Need more cheese! And check out our website: www.reel-big-fish.com

FAU’s Owl Prowl Homecoming Concert will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Outdoor Stage. Tickets are free, but limited space is available. Students can get tickets by presenting their Owl Cards in the Student Involvement and Leadership Office located upstairs in the Student Union.

It’s been six years since ska band Reel Big Fish performed at FAU, but how much has changed? Find out in our interview

Many people falsely claim that terrorism against Israel is the inevitable and justifiable result of Israeli aggression and ‘occupation’ of the West Bank and Gaza. The fact is, terrorism against Israelis and Jews in the region called ‘Palestine’ long

predates the ‘occupation’ and even Israel itself. Arab intolerance of Jews and the unwillingness of Arab leaders to accept a Jewish State, characterized by terrorism and warfare, was and continues to be the reason for conflict, ‘occupation’ and

refugees. Israel has always negotiated peace in good faith with those Arab neighbors willing to do the same.

come together and celebrate owls spirit. Some of the events included community service projects, the beginnings of the bonfire tradition, sporting events, and a comedy show and/or concert.DH: My favorite memory was campaigning. I had my fraternity brother’s support, in addition to almost every sorority on campus from every council and other FAU students who I [had] never met and am now good friends with.

UP: What are some Owlsley traditions you have? RS: I don’t remember specific traditions for the mascot, but [I] do remember prior to Owlsley, the mascot was named Hootie. DH: I like to give the Owsley statue outside of the rec center a high five on my way to the stadium on game day for good luck. It never really works though.

UP: How was the football team during your time as king?RS: We had a rough 2002 year because we were young, [but] we had a breakout year in 2003 when we went to the semi-finals of the Division I AA playoffs.

DH: Unfortunately we did not win many last year.

UP: Did you attend any Homecoming events like the ExtravaCANza, Timucua Pageant, or 5K walk?RS: The parade was growing back then, and the first one or two bonfires were very small and were centered around Homecoming. The Timucua Pageant was always looked forward to.DH: Yes, everything since freshman year.

UP: Anything else you’d like to add about FAU, Homecoming, Homecoming court or their changes over time?RS: I love FAU and everything it has done for me. Through my experiences at the UP, residence life, Greek life, intramurals, athletics, and of course the prOWLers, it has helped me get to where I am today. I have been a part of the Homecoming planning at the school I work for now since 2008 and it makes me wish I could go to FAU’s Homecoming every year.DH: I am so proud to be an owl and will always be. OWLNATION.

WALKIN’ FOR A CAUSE

HOMECOMING WENT PHILANTHROPIC in 2011: The FAU Center for Autism Homecoming 5K is currently in its third year. The 5K’s pre-event — a fun run — begins at 4:45 p.m. on Oct. 27. It’s open to all ages and entry is $10, but free for FAU students.

At 5:15 p.m., the real competition begins. The run will take place on the five kilometer certified course on campus, starting at the Track & Field Complex and going around the school. There will be prizes for the top three males and females overall.

The FAU Center for Autism Homecoming 5K began three years ago as a collaboration between Campus Recreation and the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. In

2011, Campus Recreation approached CARD about merging their previously independent 5Ks into one event to raise awareness on campus and to benefit the autism community.

The event originally started as a fundraiser for CARD that was intended to deliver more services to the local autism community. Robert Rubin, who is on FAU’s Board of Trustees — the 13 appointed officials with the power to vote on tuition and stadium loans — founded the event as an honorary chairperson along with the staff at both CARD and Campus Recreation.

The event has grown over time, from 600 runners the first year to more than 1,200 participants in last year’s race.

FAU graduate Sylvia Collazo will be participating in the

UPevent for the third year in a row. She graduated in 2012

with a master’s degree in exceptional student education, but she’s not letting that stop her from walking here at FAU.

“I love to get involved with any activity that supports CARD. They do so much for the families in this community and, by participating, I get to help them continue those efforts,” Collazo said. “This event truly brings a sense of togetherness for a cause. Rain or shine, you see participants of all ages, backgrounds and abilities come be a part of it. It’s really neat.”

Ali Cunningham, CARD’s assistant director, is both an enrolled student and employee here at FAU, and has been involved in the event since its inception: It’s her job to make sure the 5K goes off without a hitch.

“The run through the stadium makes it a unique 5K.

This year we are offering a buy one, get one free football ticket to all community runners who attend the event,” Cunningham said.

With traditional events come traditional sponsors — those few who have been supporting the 5K walk since 2011. Campus Recreation, The Slomin Center for Autism and Runner’s Edge of Boca Raton have supported the race in past years and will continue to do so in 2013. In years to come, dedicated walkers like Cunningham and Collazo will continue to show their passion and love for the cause.

“The whole event is great — the physical challenge, the opportunity to socialize, the range of participants enjoying themselves — it’s all wonderful to see and be a part of,” Collazo said.

On Oct. 27, 2012, Owls quarterback Graham Wilbert and FAU’s offense gave the home crowd an early Halloween treat, leading the team to a thrilling 34-27 Homecoming game win over Troy.

Though Wilbert is no longer under center, a majority of the 2012 Owls team is still intact.

And they’re looking to deliver an encore. The 2013 Homecoming game is slated to kick off at 5

p.m. on Nov. 2, when Tulane comes to Boca for FAU’s third home contest of the season and the first-ever meeting between the Conference USA teams.

Tulane may be an unfamiliar opponent, but they present a great challenge for FAU, arguably much more than Troy brought to town last year.

Through the first portion of the season, the Green Wave jumped to the top spot in C-USA’s West division with a 5-2 record. They rank within the top 100 in four major

categories –– passing yards, rushing yards, points per game and points allowed per game.

Tulane boasts a bit of star power with starting quarterback Nick Montana under center. Nick, who’s the son of iconic NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, has thrown for 1,116 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

The main benefactor of Montana’s success has been receiver Ryan Grant. Grant’s hauled in 46 receptions for 611 yards and six touchdowns.

FAU, first and foremost, must contain Tulane’s passing attack if they want to deliver a Homecoming victory. Owls top cornerback D’Joun Smith, who leads the team with four interceptions, will likely be matched by Grant and needs to lock down his side of the field.

The Owls’ defense is doing a decent job of keeping opponents off the scoreboard, allowing 26 points per game this season. However, the offense currently averages just

22.3 points per game, giving the defense very little room for error.

FAU’s offense, led by sophomore quarterback Jaquez Johnson, will try to match Tulane’s aerial efforts.

For that to happen, wide receivers William Dukes and Daniel McKinney have to find ways to get open and make a play when their numbers are called. Dukes leads the Owls in touchdown catches (four) while McKinney boasts the most receptions (32).

With both teams unlikely to pitch a shutout, the game could be decided by whichever quarterback –– Montana or Johnson –– makes more plays and less mistakes.

In that case, expect Tulane to snatch a win away from the Owls, spoiling Homecoming festivities for the FAU faithful.

OLD, BUT FASHIONABLE

Talon Awards CeremonyThe FAU Alumni Association, who strives to keep strong

relationships between current FAU staff, students and alumni, founded the Talon Awards Ceremony in 1997. Sixteen years later they remain proud co-sponsors of this historical Homecoming event.

The Talon Award Ceremony aims to recognize leaders in the FAU community. The event was organized to “recognize and celebrate outstanding leaders from the community, alumni, faculty and student body constituencies for their leadership, support and service to FAU,” according to Advancement and Alumni Relations staff member Amy Haycock.

Alumni, faculty and students attended the event, which was sponsored by the Office of Alumni Affairs and Student Government. This year, the ceremony will give awards to four people, one of whom is a current FAU student.

Shannon Vollrath, the Community Engagement event manager, is also involved. Vollrath attended FAU when the annual Talon Awards were already established, but didn’t really get involved until she began working on campus.

“I have been working for FAU for four years,” Vollrath said. “This event has always been important because it is one of the staple events for alumni and it happens only during Homecoming week.”

This year marks the 16th Annual Talon Awards Ceremony and the 15th Annual Timucua Pageant, two of the most well-known

FAU Homecoming traditions

As the Talon Awards have always been important, they have also stayed true to tradition.

“There are still four awards given and it is still held at the Alumni Center,” Vollrath said.

The only ever-changing element of the event is the change in decor and theme. As one of the event planners, this is Vollrath’s favorite part.

“I enjoy meeting and learning about our award recipients. It is nice to see how honored they feel receiving their award and being recognized,” Vollrath said.

The pride-inducing event’s schedule will proceed as follows:

“The Parliament of OWLs ceremony will be held first inside the Alumni Center,” Vollrath said. “The Talon Awards ceremony will be next and then the reception will follow.”

The OWLs, which stands for “Older Wiser Leaders” began in 2000 and has been a tradition that coincides with the Talon Awards since its beginning. It honors student leaders, past presidents and other dignitaries worthy of recognition.

As Haycock, Vollrath and the rest of the Homecoming team look forward to having their involvement in this

year’s ceremony pay off, so do the alumni that will be attending the event.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Marleen & Harold Forkas Alumni Center on the Boca campus on Oct. 30.

Timucua PageantS.S. Timucua fliers have been put up on the walls of

almost every FAU building. The famous sailor-kissing-nurse vintage photograph is the chosen background for the fliers, and for good reason. The pageant is a sort of fashion show to see who wins the prestigious title: Mr. and Mrs. Timucua 2013. The Timucua Pageant was started in 1999, making this year its 15th annual at FAU.

“Timucua Pageant was originally started as a floor program by two of the Timucua Hall [Resident Assistants], one of FAU’s original residence halls that is no longer here on campus as it was replaced by [Glades Park Towers] opening in fall 2007,” Adam Schwarz, assistant director for residential life, said.

The event has always been planned and executed by a committee of RAs, who work to develop the annual program and uphold one of the oldest campus

programming traditions, as well as one of the oldest Homecoming traditions. However, this is not to say that an old dog can’t learn new tricks.

“Another big difference is that the event was held outdoors for many years on the Housing Quad,” Schwarz said. “The 2011 show had to be moved indoors last minute due to inclement weather, so last year for the 2012 show we decided to hold the pageant indoors. We are continuing with this concept and will be hosting this year’s event in the Live Oak Pavilion, as we have the past two years.”

Schwarz has been a part of FAU’s staff since June 2012. This part of the job evokes his own personal nostalgia.

“I would say this event has been important because it was one of the first big programming initiatives I was able to work on. I served as the program committee chair, working with the students and staff, organizing the event last year and am continuing in that role this year. I also served as the Homecoming Committee staff representative from Housing and Residential Life last year.”

Schwarz’s favorite part of the event last year was not so much the decor, but the atmosphere.

“The environment created last year for the show was awesome. The student hosts were dynamic and engaging, and all the contestants seemed to have fun sharing their spirit, talents and fashion with their fellow students,” Schwarz said of the competition. “It was amazing to see the 300+ attendees stay for the night and have a great time watching their favorite contestants competing in the

four different categories.”Last year also brought some great memories for

Schwarz and the rest of those who attended and planned the pageant.

“Revealing our mystery ‘celebrity’ judge last year, Ms. Pearl [a worker at the Centre Marketplace cafeteria on campus], was my favorite memory,” Schwarz said. “Many of our on-campus students interact with her on a daily basis at the Centre Marketplace. She was recommended by the students on our committee and she was thrilled to be featured in the event. We haven’t revealed who the mystery judge for this year will be, but be on the lookout for some teasers as we get closer to the event.”

The event will stay constant with last year and will include four events: spirit, talent, formal wear and a mystery event. This mystery event changes every year and is part of what keeps things interesting around here.

“We have some surprises in store for this year, some of which have been discussed in this interview, and some the committee will be releasing [new information] as we build excitement for this year’s 15th annual event. The winners will receive a $500 housing scholarship, be featured in the Homecoming parade and have VIP access to other Homecoming events throughout the week,” Schwarz said.

With surprises on the horizon, this Timucua Pageant is looking to be the best one yet.

The event will be held in the Live Oak Pavillion at 8 p.m. on Oct. 29.
