Letters to the editorThe UP does not change or edit letters to the editor. To read these and more, visit upressonline.com.

Dear Editor; This is my forth year as a student here at Florida Atlantic University and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I love FAU. That being said, in all of my time here at FAU, I can truthfully say that every time that I’ve looked through the UP, I can count the number of good stories that have been printed on one hand and that includes if my fingers were worth half a point. It’s depressing that majority of the isues printed are not only biased, but down right deragatory to our wonderful school. Is FAU perfect no, no where is, and trying

to get the voice of the students to those who have the power to make meaningful changes is a wonderful thing, but slandering someone isn’t how you convince them. I’ve been to many other schools around the nation whose university newspapers report accurate articles, that aren’t bogged down by a paper filled with more advertisements than stories, on the goings on around campus and can present an argument without taking a side like professional journalists should. Even if funding is tough and you’re trying to reach more students, there has to be a better method than your

current one. It’s depressing that my school’s newspaper isn’t a newspaper at all, it’s more of a tabloid. More opinion than fact and more slander than story. Maybe it’s time for the UP to change? Everyone goes through change eventually right? Our beloved FAU has gone through much change, our lives have gone through an enormous amount of change, so lets have the UP changed.

By Carolina Fernandez

Erica Morgan wrote songs to get through relationship problems and peer pressure in high school, but she

never thought that her music would attract people’s attention once she got to college.

The FAU sophomore and communications major from Parkland recently released a country/pop single, “Did You Think,” which she recorded with some of the music industry’s most successful producers and musicians in Nashville and Florida.

Pete Masitti, who has previously worked with Hootie and the Blowfish and Shakira, produced the vocals on the single.

“I just wrote that song to get over a guy,” said Morgan, “I didn’t think people would actually like it.”

To her surprise, she has received several positive messages from strangers and people she hasn’t heard from in years.

“Did You Think,” which was officially released on Sept. 17, is available on iTunes. She is working to promote it through Facebook, live performances and her website. Her single has a mix of country twang and pop sweetness, reminiscent of her musical influences Shania Twain and Taylor Swift.

Morgan has been singing her whole life, but started writing music during her sophomore year of high school when she found that she had different interests than most people her age.

“Music was my outlet to escape the peer pressure,” she said, “While everyone was out partying, I would go home and write.”

In August, Morgan competed in the Texaco Country Showdown, America’s largest country music talent search. Out of the hundreds of artists who entered from around the country, she was chosen as one of the 20 competitors.

“It was really exciting because I got a lot of votes and was able to compete,” said Morgan about the event. “All of my favorite singers have performed in the same place so being able to perform there was really surreal.”

Today, Morgan is working on developing her fan base in her local area on and off-campus. On Oct. 16, she will be performing at a Farmer’s Market near Grifs Western in Davie to promote her songs.

She plans to travel to Nashville within the next two months for co-writing sessions with established hit songwriters in the country music scene. She hopes to move to Nashville after graduating to pursue her career as a country/pop singer and songwriter.

Morgan hopes that her music will inspire her audience, especially the youth, to never give up on dreams or feel discouraged.

“I want to give people something to listen to that will make them feel like they belong,” she said. “That’s what music did for me.”

Tools of the tradeThe UP looks at gaming equipment used by the pros

When a pro gamer is at his or her best, he or she strives to use top of the line headphones, controllers, computers

and even keyboards. So with Major League Gaming, the world’s premier competitive gaming organization, coming to Orlando this weekend to showcase the 8th annual Pro Circuit, we took a look at the equipment professional gamers use.

There is a strict equipment approval policy

when playing on a professional level. It is required that every player has the same advantages.

“They wouldn’t even let me have LED lights on my controller,” said Geoff Norris, a former MLG Pro bracket Halo 2 player. “I used to glue a stopwatch to the top of my controller to keep time, but I don’t think you can even do that anymore.”

Here is a look at what an average pro gamer uses in practice and competition:

The most important thing in any gaming competition is team communication. The official headset of MLG is made by Astro Gaming. A basic wired headset will cost you about $130, but if you want the premium, wireless, surround sound, noise cancelling headphones, it will run you $290. In comparison to the common headset, it’s an average price. In terms of quality comparison to something like a standard Xbox 360 headset, however, Astro blows it away.

“I never play without a headset,” said Norris. “There are times when you get saved from a bad situation all thanks to the surround sound of the headphones. It helps you hear things that you otherwise wouldn’t.”

Any true gamer knows that energy drinks are essential. Whether you’re up all night practicing or playing a full 10 a.m. to midnight on competition day, an energy drink can do you wonders.

“Last time I played at MLG, we got free energy drinks,” said Norris. “I drank more of those than I can remember.

ENERGY DRINK

Competitors have the choice between wireless and wired controllers.“I always use the wired controller,” said Norris. “In my opinion, I think nothing sends a signal

faster.” The only rule is that your controller has no modifications to it and is the standard Xbox 360

or Playstation 3 controller. Any alterations are prohibited. Next year, MLG will be coming out with an official controller designed by Mad Catz. The controller will be so customizable, the competitors can even change its weight.

If you are a PC gamer, then Starcraft 2 is your Pro Circuit game. The Alienware AURORA is the official PC for MLG competitions. The AURORA packs an Intel Core i7 920 processor, 6GB Triple Channel RAM, and a 1.8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 graphics card. In other words, this computer is ridiculously fast. If you watch a Starcraft competition, players move around the screen with intense speed. An average computer would crumble at just the boot up of an online battle.

news

Students won’t have to worry about paying for home game tickets at the new football stadium, but parking is another story.

An announcement FAU sent on Oct. 2 warns students of parking fines, road closures and car towing when the Owls play at home. The first home game is Oct. 15.

Most parking lots, for instance, must be empty by 10 p.m. the night before game day. According to game day parking rules, cars parked in any lots after that time will be towed (check out the map and the towing info box for more).

Free spots for students are limited to faculty parking in front of Living Room Theaters.

According to Azita Dashtaki, Associate Vice President of Facilities, FAU estimates 10,000 to 11,000 cars on game day. With 92 free spots for students, most people must pay.

Students must pay $5 per car to park, according to an Oct. 7 FAU Athletics announcement. That’s more than schools like UF, FIU and UCF — their students park for free.

Student Body President Ayden Maher opposes the fee. “We just had an increase in student fees, and I firmly believe that students shouldn’t need to pay for parking.”

news

SO, YOU GOT TOWED? FAU’s Traffic and Parking department says they’ll tow cars from certain lots at 10 p.m. the night before a game. Here’s what you should know if you get towed.

The company, Emerald Towing, is the same company FAU uses year round. According to Jeanise Barbe, Operations Manager at Emerald, It costs $156 for the pick up

and $7 per mile after that. Luckily, they’re located less than 2 miles away, which will only cost you $14 more.

If you wait longer than 6 hours to pick up your car, you’ll be charged a $25 per day for each day your car sits there.

The registered owner of the vehicle needs to pick up the car in person. So, if your car is in someone else’s name, he or she needs to pick it up.

Call: 1-800-239-0604 to arrange pick-up. Location: 980 NW 1st Ave., Boca Raton, 33432

Check out www.fau.edu/parking/gameday.php for the full list.

Students are allowed to park in the lots next to the Social Science building, across the street from the University Village Apartments.

In order to prevent students from avoiding the parking fee, Boca Raton Police will be patrolling off-campus parking lots like the University Commons, a shopping plaza across from FAU on Glades.

FAU Deputy Police Chief Keith Totten said that since off-campus lots are private, Boca PD “will tow cars right out of there.”

Donors and season ticket holders will park in the closest lots. Single game day ticket holders will be charged $15 per car, and need to park near the Burrow and Oxley Center.

A parking fee isn’t the only difference between FAU and other universities. There won’t be shuttle service on game day. The walk from the student lots towards the stadium will “take about 10 minutes,” explained Dashtaki.

At UF, a shuttle takes students from dorms and parking lots to their stadium, while UCF’s shuttles operate for two hours after a game is over.

“The size of our campus doesn’t really call for a shuttle service. We’re not that big,” Dashtaki told the UP.

According to Totten, 120 campus and city cops, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), will be on duty watching for underage drinking and other game day rule-breaking (look below for a list of official regulations).

Officers will be directing traffic due to campus road closures. The closures are meant to avoid traffic jams, according to Dashtaki. The FAU entrance through 20th Street will be closed off, and a portion of West University drive will be pedestrian-only (check out the map right).

FAU’s rules say that parking lots open 4 hours before kickoff and tailgating must stop once the game starts. At UF, gates open at 7 p.m. the night before a game and no one needs to leave until the noon after a game.

“It will help keep a clean campus with students being intoxicated for a shorter period of time,” Student Body President Ayden Maher said about FAU’s tailgating time window.

For more info on what you can and can’t do on game day, check out the campus map and information below.

GAME DAY RULESHere are some game day rules you should know before showing up:

Large group tailgating (Groups larger than 20 individuals) must contact the Department of Athletics for further information.

Tailgating within lots must conclude at kickoff and is not permitted after the games.Tailgating for student organizations is restricted to the designated student tailgating area(s).

Registration of each organization’s event is required. No solicitation, selling or marketing of any kind is allowed. No loud music or profanity. Personal tents/canopies must be 10’ x 10’ or smaller.

Email mariam aldhahiat [email protected]

Continued from page 9

According to FAU’s game day rules, “tailgating must conclude at kick off and is not permitted after the games.”

With parking lots opening four hours before the game, students don’t have much time to tailgate compared to UF. According to UF’s tailgating rules, lots open for tailgating at 7 p.m. the night before a game and don’t close until noon the day after a game. That’s 17 hours more than FAU permits.

Since the first game at the stadium starts at 4 p.m., students won’t be able to tailgate until noon. At UCF, students are free to start tailgating at 8 a.m. the morning of a game, regardless of kickoff time.

TAILGATING

Tailgating rules and regulations were taken from each university’s site, respectively.
