Boynton Beach police arrested then-FAU officer Jimmy Ho for the shooting of escort Sheri Deann Carter. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and false imprisonment. He told police it was self-defense.

While in custody, Ho resigned from his position as corporal.

Feb. 1

Feb. 2Ho had his first appearance in front of a judge. He was ordered to be held without bond, undergo mental evaluation and forbidden from contatcting friends or family.

Feb. 3Ho attempted suicide by trying to hang himself in his Palm Beach County jail cell.

Sheri Deann Carter died at Delray Medical Center from her injuries. She was shot twice and was paralyzed below the waist. First degree murder was added to Ho’s charges.

april 8There was a status check for Ho. He was not in court but state prosecutors said they planned to seek the death penalty.

May 31Ho had another status check. He was not in court again, but the judge granted more time to prepare for the case. The trial date was set for Aug. 12.

Clad in royal purples and crisp whites, dozens of women filled Live Oak Pavilion C and D on

Aug. 26 for FAU’s third annual Women’s Equality Day Celebration. The event celebrated the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in 1920.

Attendees wore purple and white like the suffragettes of the late 19th and early 20th century, who fought for women’s voting rights.

Guest speaker, Judith Selzer, felt women have made great advancements since 1920. “There are more women in office and voting, and FAU has a woman president: Mary Jane Saunders,” she said. Selzer is a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast.

Palm Beach County’s League of Women Voter’s president, Joan Karp, on the other hand, thought there was still ways to go. “There is disparity in job salaries. Women are expected to be in home with the kids.” When asked what could be done for change, she said, “Make it consistent so that men and women have equal rights.”

attended the ceremony. She felt the role of women at FAU was “encouraging,” and mentioned that it was better for women in politics now. “Under a political lens, it’s great, but de facto, not so great. We have very far more laws and rights, but as a society, we’re still the same. Women struggled to better themselves. Society has not.”

Over 100 student clubs from every FAU campus have signed up to recruit new

members at the Boca campus’ Rec Center.

This annual gathering, known as Club Fest, will be held on Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free food, a live DJ and prize giveaways. “I would safely say there will be [over 120] organizations participating in this year’s event due to our continuous marketing and promotion,” said Katie Burke, Boca campus’ Council of Student Organizations (COSO) coordinator. COSO is responsible for funding student clubs, and hosting Club Fest.

“Club Fest allows us to recruit students and give them the chance to do something they wouldn’t normally get to experience every day,” said FAU’s Film Club president Peter Amirato, who’ll be attending the event for his club. Amirato said his Club Fest booth will have cameras, video equipment and T-shirts bearing his club’s logo.

Andrew Hackett, a founding member of the Owl Rangers, will also be attending Club Fest. According to Hackett, Owl Rangers’ club members go to all FAU home volleyball, basketball and football games painted from the waist up in school colors. He said the reason is to spread and encourage school spirit. “We are the sixth man out there on the court, we are part of the team,” said Hackett. The Owl Rangers’ booth plans on holding competitions for prizes.

“Students should attend Club Fest, they will be able to immediately connect with new students and hear what the student organizations have planned for the upcoming semester,” said Burke. For more info on Club Fest, visit www.fau.edu/sil.

The storm threat is gone, but hurricane season goes on – and so do FAU’s preparation and safety events

Hurricane Irene was more than 170 miles east of FAU campuses when it passed last Thursday, according to National Hurricane Center data. But that didn’t stop the university from posting three status updates a day to fau.edu, all of which said things were “operating normally.”

That level of caution may come from experience. In 2004, the UP reported a Category 2 storm named Frances – weaker than Category 3 Irene – struck and shut down the Boca campus for almost two weeks. That’s how long it took to restore power, clear debris across campus and remove the uprooted giant ficus trees that once sat behind the administration building.

There was serious damage to students’ free time, too. The UP reported that administrators

sent an email to faculty leaving it up to them to decide how to make up lost class time. Here are the options FAU put on the table, which could be used again: “Use of Friday, Saturday or Sunday [time] blocks; Use of holiday time; Extension of class meeting times; Elimination or abbreviation of class break time; Additional office hours for tutorials; Additional on-line activities; and Additional assignments.”

Hurricane season officially runs until Nov. 30, so we aren’t in the clear yet. And you can expect the university to remind you of that – the departure of Hurricane Irene coincidentally lines up with the beginning of FAU’s annual Safety Month. This will include lessons and activities on how to respond to all kinds of danger, from CPR and fire prevention, to drunk driving and date rape. But given the recent weather, there’s one topic sure to come up: hurricanes.

FAU may decide to evacuate the campus following a hurricane warning. If that happens, no student will be allowed to stay on or enter campus until the university is officially reopened, so consider taking anything you need.

(See links for a supply list.) Remember you may have to carry everything around for a while, though.

Residents should park their vehicles in the garage. Bicycles can be stored in dorms, but not motorcycles or mopeds. Improperly

parked vehicles may still be removed regardless of the weather.

S t u d e n t s a r e encouraged to stay with friends or family, but those with neither nearby can stay at a designated Red Cross shelter. Housing will

provide exact locations and transportation. But these places may not offer much privacy and could be crowded. They also probably won’t tolerate hurricane parties.

Safety Month

Safety is a serious operation at FAU. The university has plans in place for just about every potential disaster situation, from campus plane crashes to hostage-taking. Most of it is available online, and students may find some of it fascinating. For example, they have a 38-page Crisis Action Guide (see link below) designed for the community, which includes tips on things like how to interview a campus bomber over the phone (that’s on page 25).

There’s also plenty of complicated stuff that might be considered boring. For example, FAU requires individual university departments to come up with comprehensive plans to respond to emergencies, and these include 30 pages of flow charts, lists and instructions. Plus, there’s a 43-page template for something called a Continuity of Operations Plan.

But FAU tries to give safety and preparedness a wider appeal with annual Safety Month events, held across multiple campuses. These events cover a range of topics, including alcohol and drug abuse, defensive driving and protecting your property from theft.

Club FAU (Wednesday, 9/7 7 to 9 p.m. on the Jupiter campus) This event simulates a nightclub setting with music, lights and cocktails – non-alcoholic, of course. The goal is to teach students to party safely.

DUI & Drunk Goggle Awareness (Tuesday 9/27, 12 to 6 p.m. on the Davie campus, Wednesday 9/28 12 to 6 p.m. on the Fort Lauderdale campus) In the past, this event has given students a chance to simulate a 10 mph car crash and stagger around in beer goggles.

On Oct. 13, a giant red blob will be scorched and burned on the Boca campus.

M i k e B u r d m a n , coordinator of student government, is in charge of getting wood to build Big Red, the misshapen mascot of the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers. At its annual bonfire, FAU usually burns an effigy of the football team’s first opponent of the season.

But poor weather postponed this year’s blaze, originally scheduled for Aug. 25, until mid-October. That broke a four-year tradition.

“It’s a tradition we try and uphold every year,” Burdman said. “Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate with us this year.”

Although the bonfire had to be cancelled, it is now scheduled for two days before FAU’s first game in its new stadium — which might make the tradition even more special.

“We’re really going

to make this a real big, important spectacle that students aren’t going to want to miss,” Burdman said. “This is going to be big. We’re opening a stadium — you only get to do that once. We’re going to get everybody out here for this.”

Burdman added that there were surprises in store.

“We’ll be unveiling something special that night,” he said.

That something special, at least according to student body president Ayden Maher, will be a permanent fixture on campus.

“After the pep rally, we will be unveiling the first permanent large bronze item on campus,” Maher said.

But what really makes memories is the little stories that become part of tradition.

“The first official fall bonfire was four years ago, and we burnt an effigy of Texas that year,” Burdman said. “The second year we burnt a big red ‘N’ for

Nebraska, and all that did was anger them.”

Burdman had trouble getting the fire started around that big, red “N”. He looked at it, perplexed, and wondered why it wouldn’t light.

“[The] fire department’s like, ‘What are we gonna do?’” Burdman said. “I was like, ‘I got it!’”

As onlookers stood by, Burdman brought a 2.5-gallon container of gas and tossed it into the fire.

“And the whole pile just went poooof,” he said.

Burdman was met with applause from all — even head coach Howard Schnellenberger.

“Coach runs out from behind the pile, fist pumping in the air,” Burdman said. “It was just awesome.”

“Burdman’s my hero!” Schnellenberger yelled.

On Oct.13, Burdman and the rest of FAU get another chance to build memories.

“We’ve taken the bonfire and pep rally and turned it into a whole day of events,” Maher said.

Aside from the methods described above, the university can deliver emergency info straight to your phone – but only if you give them your current contact info. Here’s how to update that:

1. Log into myfau.fau.edu.On the Home tab, click FAU Self-Service.

2.Under “Personal Information,” click “Update FAU Alert Phone Numbers” at the bottom of the list.

3.List up to four numbers and check if you want to receive text messages. You can also opt out of alerts.

You may also want to leave FAU emergency contact information for your family. That option is listed under “Personal Information.” And while you won’t be on campus during a hurricane, FAU has a speaker and siren system for unexpected disasters. If you hear it, seek shelter immediately from potential tornadoes, meteors or terrorists.

Since June, the free dating site Datemyschool.com has been offered to FAU students. I

decided to sign up and check it out — but it seems no one else did.

In order to cut down the types of people who can register, the site requires a university ID to sign up.

Knowing that only FAU men would be seeing my profile, I chose

a lucrative name: Single_Lady. I figured that would be charming enough to reel in all of the eligible bachelors on campus.

Not quite. Columbia University business students Balazs Alexa

and Jean Meyer started the website in order to match students with similar goals. It started last November, after a female classmate complained about the lack of men in the nursing school.

After 1,300 Columbia students signed up for the site within the first week, Alexa and Meyer decided to go national.

The site prides itself on two things — its ability to let you to search for other students in your college, and its efficiency.

Director of Public Relations Melanie Wallner mentions, “Our site has instant gratification. Most people have dates within the first thirty minutes, which isn’t usually the case with online dating.”

Both points may have been true in my case were if not for one problem — there was only one other FAU student on the site.

For the sake of salvaging my dignity, let’s assume that he is not an active user. With the exception of his college, his profile is completely bare of any information.

DMS allows you to make your profile as private or public as you want. Once FAU bachelors were no longer an option, Single_Lady went public.

The site has more than 8,100 users and, although most of them are located in New York and its surrounding areas, it provided a necessary ego boost.

DMS includes aspects such as status updates and a “like” button, which makes it comparable to the popular social networking site Facebook. To avoid any confusion, both Wallner and Alexa note that their site is not trying to become a Facebook clone.

“DateMySchool is a reversed social network, introducing you to people you don’t know instead of keeping you up to date on the people you already know,”

Alexa said in an email. Meanwhile, a few minutes and one status update later,

instant messages began flowing in from men studying at Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania. The first guy skipped the introduction and was wondering “where FAU is located.” Smooth move.

Last season, linebacker David Hinds would barrel into opposing offensive lines with little chance of success at reaching the quarterback or ball carriers

in the backfield. This season, Hinds, along with the rest of the Owls defense, is looking forward to causing trouble for opponents thanks to their new weapon — the 3-4 defense.

FAU is making the switch from a traditional 4-3 to a 3-4 defensive scheme, in the hopes of countering the spread offense.

“There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to make us better,” Hinds said. “Last year we were a conservative team when it came to blitzing and zone coverages. The 3-4 is a run-stopping and a blitzing defense to confuse the offensive line and quarterback. We have more freedom than in the 4-3.”

In a 3-4 defensive alignment there are three down linemen at the line of scrimmage and four linebackers, as opposed to the four linemen and three linebackers of a 4-3 scheme.

“It puts more speed on the field,” defensive coordinator Kurt Van Valkenburgh said. “You take away one defensive lineman and replace them with a linebacker. We feel it will give us an advantage in our pressure packages because it’s a little harder [for the offense] to determine who is rushing and which of the four could be coming. It’s a defense that disguises itself until the last possible second.”

In 2010 the defense was unable to stop its opponents, giving up 401.3 yards per game while allowing opponents 29.2 points per game. Although the unit struggled all season, news of the change in the offseason came as a surprise.

“At first we sat there and were like ‘we gotta switch?’ because we were so used to the 4-3 and we were just starting to figure out how to fit into that,” Hinds said.

“It puts us as a team in better positions to win games,” senior Kevin Cyrille said. “In scrimmages we’ve been forcing a lot of turnovers. Our defensive line will have a lot of movement and face double teams, but we have the right guys on the outside in the right places to make big plays.”

The 3-4 will give Van Valkenburgh and his defense more flexibility when it comes to showing their hand on the field. In 2010 the Owls had little success making stops on the field, and now, at least in the few offseason scrimmages, the defense has been the one constant on the field as they have forced 12 turnovers in two games against the offense.

“We had some guys change positions in the offseason and it’s still a work in progress,” Van Valkenburgh said. “Most of our turnovers in the scrimmages were earned. We’ve got a long way to go to be where we want to be, but I think their intensity level is up from a year ago and they’re looking to make plays more than they did a year ago.”

Although the Owls have struggled on defense in recent years, that wasn’t the reason for the change. Teams in college football are relying more on the spread offense, which tries to thin out the defense and spread them out

throughout the field. This has left the Owls in the dust in previous seasons, and Van Valkenburgh feels now is the right time to make the change.

“It was a number of reasons why we switched,” Van Valkenburgh said. “The style of offense we see, our personnel, and wanting to become a team that had more speed and versatility on the field.”

The 3-4 defense will be a challenge for the Owls this year, but with the numbers the 2010 unit put up, improvement may not be too difficult for the 2011 squad to attain. Last season the Owls defense tied for 66th in the nation for interceptions with only 11, and had 20 sacks, good enough for 86th.

With the new system in place, the defense is looking to force opposing offenses to become one-dimensional by stuffing the run and making them pass.

“If we can make plays up front, we’re confident that the rest will fall in place as we have practiced all offseason,” Cyrille said. “When we stop the run in practice, we eventually force turnovers, and in games that will put our offense and our team in good positions to score points and win games.”

By throwing in a new defensive playbook, adding some blitz packages and moving linemen around, Van Valkenburgh and his players hope they have found the

recipe to a winning formula. It also helps that this scheme is being used by some of the best colleges in the country, as well by as many teams in the NFL.

“I’ve seen it in the NFL, but I hadn’t played in this type of defense before,” Cyrille said. “It’s good to know that what we’re doing now can help win games here and also to make it to the next level.”

Tom Hanks is awesome. That’s fact, not opinion. So it was very surprising that The Da Vinci Code was such a horrible novel adaption. First off, Hanks looked really weird with long hair. Once you got past that, Hollywood tried to make a movie based off of a best selling novel that sparked a huge controversy within the Christian community. The only problem is that they left out a lot of the plot information, which made the novel so awesome.

The Da Vinci coDe

Eragon is the first book in a four-part series known as the Inheritance Cycle. Before the film’s release, it was promised that all the books in the series would be made into movies, but the movie adaption of the first book was so bad it never got a sequel. The movie just didn’t seem to get the same following as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or even Twilight. Maybe it was because no one knew of the books existence, or maybe it was because the movie just sucked.

This novel was a best selling kids book. If you never saw the movie, good. You didn’t miss much. The highlight of the movie was watching Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig rock the silver screen like they usually do. But this movie ... well ... we’ll just chalk it up to a little bump in their career.

Planet of the Apes is a movie based on a 1963 French novel by Pierre Boulle. The book is a compelling sci-fi adventure and sparked a franchise of movies in Hollywood. The only problem is that they aren’t very good. Not only did Hollywood attempt to make a movie adaption in 1968, but 33 years later, they tried it again. The attempted remake was even worse than the original. On their own, the movies are pretty enjoyable. But when compared to the novel that got it all started, there’s no comparison.

The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novella, The Shawshank Redemption, is the second highest rated movie on the Internet Movie Data Base website (imdb.com). What’s surprising is that the movie didn’t do so hot in the box office. Instead, it became a sensation on TV and in home theaters. You only really need to know one thing about this movie to get you roped in: Morgan Freeman. That man can talk about paint drying and it would be fascinating.

The shawshank reDempTion

LOTR fans and fanatics will agree that the final movie in the trilogy was the most compelling and exciting. Alright, so Peter Jackson left out a few things from the novel, but overall it was the most thrilling of the three movies. Now Jackson is working on the Hobbit. Contain yourself.

lorD of The rings: reTurn of The king

The Harry Potter saga was a challenge to make into movies. As each seceding book in the series became increasingly encyclopedia-like, the need for detail in the movies became more intense. Hollywood got it right by dividing the final book in two movies, rather than trying to shove hours worth of material into one long film. Of the two concluding films, The Deathly Hollows: Part 1 was more accurate, as it had the most detail from the novels.

In 1988, the BBC aired a novel-to-screen adaptation that was actually pretty good. Then, in 2005, Hollywood took a stab at this beloved childhood series and nailed it. The remake was almost spot-on with the novel, and featured the soothing voice of Liam Neeson as Aslan the lion. The Chronicles continue as book three of the seven part series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, was released December 2010.

Out of all the films based on novels, To Kill a Mockingbird is the most accurate and well known, probably due to the fact that it was a required book for a lot of people in highschool. The novel won a Pulitzer Prize, and the movie ranks 25 on the American Film Institutes’ Greatest Movie’s of All Time list. AFI also named the story’s main character, Atticus Finch, the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. Bottom line: you’re going to want to check this movie out.

As Hollywood goes on what seems to be a giant remake rampage, there is one thing that remains constant: Movies based on books

usually really suck.Whether it’s a remake or first time experiment, there

seems to be something that gets lost in the silver screen adaption of a novel. Then again there are a few that shine through as beacons of hope for a joint literary

cinematic world...until Hollywood remakes them to death and the magic is ruined. (We’re talking about you, Planet of the Apes.)

The UP staff reads a lot of books and watches a lot of movies. Here are what we believe to be the top 5 worst and Top 5 best movies based on books:

If you saw this movie without reading the book, you might have actually found it to be an enjoyably mediocre, forgettable action flick for pre-teen boys. That said, if you did read the novel first, you endured a movie that lost the charm and heart pounding action portrayed in the book. How something that was exciting without pictures became lame with them is just mind boggling.

The start of the Owls’ daunting schedule begins Sept. 3, when FAU travels to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators. For the first of their five consecutive road games, the Owls will be visiting Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, also known as “The Swamp,” to play in front of 90,000 fans as they try to take down the 22nd- ranked team in the country.

The Gators, who haven’t lost their season opening game since 1989, will look to regain their championship form this season, after a disappointing 2010 campaign in which the team went 8-5 under quarterback John Brantley.

New Gators’ head coach Will Muschamp brought in offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss to run a pro-style offense, marking a shift from the spread offense that saw success in the Gators’ two national championships in 2006 and 2008. Last season, the team finished 88th in the nation in passing yards, averaging only 184.3 yards per game.

The Owls’ offense will be led by redshirt junior quarterback Graham Wilbert. Last season, Wilbert saw action in two games, completed 1 of 5 passes for 41 yards and was intercepted once. Additionally, Wilbert has shown inaccuracy in the Owls’ two scrimmages, having thrown five interceptions.

The Owls will feature a young team, having lost their two leading tacklers from the 2010 season (Michael Lockley and Malik Eugene), as well as their top two wide receivers (Lestar Jean and Avery Holley).

DeAndre Richardson is the top returning receiver — and he has only 12 catches for 114 yards.

In order for FAU to stand a chance against the Gators, a heavy dose of the running game is in order. Senior running backs Alfred Morris, Willie Floyd and junior Xavier Stinson will have to carry the load and move the ball down the field effectively.

If the Owls can maintain the time-of-possession battle, and keep the Gators’ offense off the field, the game could be closer then most experts predict.

The Owls’ defense, showcasing its new 3-4 scheme, has been strong in the team’s two scrimmages. The challenge will be preventing the Gators from running the ball and forcing UF quarterback John Brantley to throw the ball. Last season Brantley threw more interceptions than touchdowns, and had a difficult time grasping the offense.

Gators’ offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss, who has coached some of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks including Tom Brady and Matt Cassell, will urge his offense make a strong start and light up the scoreboard.

For the Owls to have a competitive game, they must play mistake-free football, control the clock and dominate in the trenches. The Gators will be looking to make an example of the Owls and send a message to the rest of the country that Gators’ football has returned.

If the Owls are serious about sending Howard Schnellenberger off with a bang it would do the young team good to play a competitive game against the Gators. I wouldn’t hold my breath, though.
