In a news release, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR) said it is currently assessing individual protection

needs of former residents of the camp, situated in the northof Baghdad, the capital, in an effort to close the camp

peacefully and resolve the situation of its residents.

Camp Ashraf is made up of several thousand Iranian exiles,

many of them members of a group known as the Peoples Mojahedeen of Iran. In line with a memorandum of

understanding signed in December by the UN and the Iraqi Government, some two-thirds of the residents, or nearly

2,000 people, were re-located to a temporary transit location near Baghdad known as Camp Hurriya, where a process to

determine refugee status is being carried out by UNHCR. Another 1,286 individuals are still awaiting transfer to the

    transit centre.

According to the agency, those found to be in need of international protection may have the possibility of being

    resettled to another country.

Status determination, however, does not in itself resolve things, said UNHCRs Assistant High Commissioner for

Protection, Erika Feller. It must be accompanied by efforts from all concerned, in good faith and in a spirit of

international solidarity, to offer resettlement solutions and, in the interim, to assist people to stay safely and decently

until such solutions can be materialized.

UNHCR called on countries to cooperate by allowing for re-admission of individuals having had previous links with

them, or by offering resettlement places or other forms of humanitarian admission. It also said it hoped that the

Government of Iraq will maintain the asylum option in Iraq pending realization of solutions for these individuals.

In addition, UNHCR appealed to States for financial support, including for the host country to meet costs associated

with transferring, hosting, housing, assisting and processing the cases of these individuals until solutions have been

    found.

To many who have met with the large-scale struggle of

Mojahedin Khalq Organization MKO/MEK to be removed

from the US the State Departments list of FTO, it is a great

shock to see it taking a fierce pride in glorifying its past

perpetrated terrorist deeds. Glorification of terrorism is

tantamount to engaging in terrorism itself and hardly

anybody expects a terrorist group insisting to have

abandoned terrorism in favor of a liberal democracy,

although there is no written or public record to verify the

claim, publically eulogize a military offense.

On 25 July 1988, only days after Iran-Iraq governments

accepted the UN Security Council Resolution 598 that

called for a cease fire in the eight-year long war, MKO

launched its major military invasion onto the Iranian

borders. Supported by Iraqi army and its air cover, Rajavi

dispatched his estimated 7000 forces National Liberation

Army (NLA) to demonstrate his organizations military

potentiality in a four-day lasted operation, namely

Operation Eternal Light. In its unclassified 1992 report on

MKO, the State Department refers to the operation as an

explicit evidence of MKOs armed struggle and close

    collaboration with Saddams regime.

The group launched its most significant incursion in June

and July 1988, when they coordinated an advance into Iran

with Iraqi forces. During the same offensive, Iraqi units in

other sectors of the front used chemical weapons against

Iran. NLA units briefly seized the Iranian border towns of

Mehran, Karand, and Islamabad-e Gharb. The Mojahedin

claimed to have killed 40,000 Iranians, but other military

observers said the, NLA just got wiped out when Iranian

    reinforcements arrived.

The operation on which MKO had heavily invested turned

MKO Still Glorifies Violence and Militarism

Glorification of a military operation indicates violenceis still boiling inside MKO... The operation on which MKO had heavily invested turned to be a total military

failure and a proven suicide operation that led nearly 1300 forces, according to the

organizations own report, to their sacrifice. In fact, MKO hurried to take

advantage of a no-war no-peace situation created after the ceasefire in limbo, a

golden opportunity for Rajavi to take his last chance totally disregarding the high

cost it would impose. In fact, he was desperately in need of and search for an outlet

out of an inevitable cul-de-sac rather than to accomplish a strategic necessity ..

advantage of a no-war no-peace situation created after the

ceasefire in limbo, a golden opportunity for Rajavi to take

his last chance totally disregarding the high cost it would

impose. In fact, he was desperately in need of and search

for an outlet out of an inevitable cul-de-sac rather than to

    accomplish a strategic necessity.

The consequence of MKOs widespread terrorist operations

of bombing and assassination inside Iran and its later out-

of-the-border organized hit and run operations perpetrated

in the last three decades as well as its broadly launched

military operation like that of the Eternal Light was to be

globally recognized as a terrorist group. However, the good

part is that the history and the recorded facts can never be

distorted. And MKO does not seem to have any interest in

renouncing its spectacular military venture as it has been

condoned by some Western countries when they made a

sudden U-turn and decided to delist the group.

Under the Terrorism Act passed in 2006, glorification of

terrorism is outlawed in the UK; it was overlooked when a

British court ordered removal of MKO from the countrys list

of terrorist groups in 2008. However, a states decision that

meets political interests differs with a nations opinion that

can easily judge by evident discrepancy between claims

and facts. Commemorating the anniversary of a terrorist

military offense like the operation Eternal Light is an

evident example of the glorification of violence and death-

seeking attitude still boiling inside MKO.

    The Cult of MEK

The Mujahedin-e Khalq is trying to steer its supporters in the United States toward war, which shows that the

enemy of our enemy is notour friend.

JEREMIAH GOULKAJEREMIAH GOULKAJEREMIAH GOULKAJEREMIAH GOULKA JULY 18, 2012

The Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) is in the news again. Images

of Newt Gingrichbowingto the Iranian dissident groups

leader, Maryam Rajavi, after speaking to MEK members at

a Paris rally, and ChicagoTribune columnist Clarence

Pages unauthorized, paid speech at the same event have

brought renewed attention to theMEKs expensive (and possibly illegal) lobbying operation in

    Washington.

Gingrich and Page arent the only high-profile figures the

MEK has enlisted in its bid to get off the State

Departments foreign terrorist organization list. The group

has persuaded a number of onetime officials, including

former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, former

Homeland Security Adviser Francis Fragos Townsend,

former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, former New York

City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former Vermont GovernorHoward Dean, to argue its case. These public figures

have taken money, in some cases more than $30,000 per

speech, to speak on the groups behalf. As a result, theU.S.

Treasury Department has begun to look into the fees,

because, according to the Supreme Court, advocacy

performed in coordination with, or at the direction of, a

foreign terrorist organization constitutes the federal crime

of material support of terrorism. The speakers have also

failed to register as lobbyists under the Foreign Agent

Registration Act, and there is an increasing push for

    criminal investigations.

As it turns out, however, many of the public figures openly

admit that they did not know much about the MEK when

they agreed to attend the events. Many were invited by

suspected MEK front groups with names such as the

Organizing Committee for Convention for Democracy in Iran

and the Iranian American Community of North Texas, and

they approached the ex-officials through their agents.

Former chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and co

-chair of the 9/11 Commission Lee Hamilton, who also

spoke in support of the MEK, told TheNew York Times, I

dont know a lot about the group.Clarence

Page told ProPublica that he thought he was giving a talk on

promoting democracy and regime change in Iran.

Accidentally or not, though, the speakers were helping to

raise the profile and legitimize the aims of a cult group that

will not bring democracy to Iran and has no popular support

in the country. And while the latest news stories on the MEK

highlight its immediate goal of getting off the terrorist list,

they miss the groups real aim: to have the United States

install the MEK as Irans new government. That would mean

war. The MEK may deny wanting violent regime change, butthe only conceivable way it could become the next

government in Tehran would be at the head of a U.S.

    invasion force.

Once upon a time, the MEK did enjoy some measure of

popular support in Iran. But after getting shoved aside by

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeinis party after the 1979 Iranian

Revolution, the MEK spent the next two decades launching

terrorist attacks against the new regime and its military,

harming bystanders in several instances. The MEK joined

sides with Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), moving to camps in Iraq in 1986 and fighting

against Iranian conscripts. Frustrated that Saddam failed to

install it in power in Tehran by the end of the war, the MEK

attempted its own invasion of Iran (using more of Saddam

Husseins military munificence), resulting in the death of

thousands of its members. These acts destroyed the MEKs

credibility among Iranians. Trapped in the Iraqi desert, the

groups leaders transformed the MEK into a cult after the

failed invasionengaging in such practices as mandated

divorce and celibacy, sleep deprivation, public shaming,

separation of families, and information controland

continued its terrorist attacks in Iran.

remaining steps for the closure of Camp Ashraf and builds

upon the work that has produced the safe relocation of

almost two-thirds of the residents from Ashraf to Camp

this plan, which can advance our shared objective: the safe

departure of the residents from Iraq.

The Government of Iraq has recently taken constructive

steps to advance this process. On July 15, it transported

from Camp Ashraf to Camp Hurriya a cargo convoy of 300

additional air conditioners, several large water tanks,

additional generators, and other goods to improve the

residents quality of life at Camp Hurriya. On July 19, the

Iraqi Government transported to Camp Hurriya three

specially-equipped vehicles for residents with disabilities. We

commend the Government for these positive measures and

for its stated commitment to a peaceful resolution of this

issue, which is the only acceptable outcome. It is now time

for the leaders of the residents at Camp Ashraf to take a

similarly constructive step and immediately resume the

relocation of residents from Camp Ashraf to Camp Hurriya. While some legitimate humanitarian issues need continued

attention, prompt cooperation with UNAMIs suggestions is

critical to achieving a peaceful, humane, and secure

    outcome for the Ashraf residents.

The Mujahedin-e Khalqs (MEK's) cooperation in the closure

of Camp Ashraf, the MEK's main paramilitary base, continues

to be a key factor in the Departments upcoming

determination regarding the MEKs Foreign Terrorist

Organization status. The MEKs actions in the days and

weeks ahead can show whether the organization remainsinvested in its violent past of terrorism or is committed to

    leaving that past behind.

Struan Stevenson and Alejo Vidal-Quadras. Even this is

not acceptable and Brussels is investigating ways to

further curtail the MEKs activities in the city. In the UK,

the recent deaths of Lord Corbett and Lord Archer, ardent MEK advocates in the House of Lords, have left a

huge hole in the MEKs lobbying activities. This was

reflected clearly in a spate of badly written hysterical

press releases which had clearly not had the benefit

even the minimum proof reading for style and logic.

Rajavi has had to seek a new narrative in Europe to

confront this latest crisis, apparently forgetful or ignorant

that those who dont fall for his smoke and mirrors

deception can clearly see what both his right hand and

his left hand are doing when he performs his illusions.

With Lord Magginis of Drumglass a Crossbencher from

Northern Ireland now advocating for the MEK in the

House of Lords, Rajavi has hit upon what must have

seemed to him a brilliant idea, which is to borrow from

the successful transition of the IRA from terrorists to

parliamentarians. Rajavi is now saying that, yes we once

were terrorists (we did actually kill thousands and

thousands of people), but we have renounced violence

and are now peace loving democrats with a feminist

    face.

(He is forgetting that the IRA brokered their ceasefire

and disarmament with their avowed enemy the British

government. It is the British government which the IRA

were fighting. In the same way, other terrorist entities,

such as ETA, must declare and negotiate the terms of

any ceasefire directly with their enemy, in this case the

government of Spain. The MEK would find this

impossible since they have not and cannot change their

violent malignity toward the government and ruling

system of Iran. Besides, the MEK have never announced

to its own membership that it either has, or intends to,

renounce violence, let alone made a public statement to

    this effect.)

So, in Europe the MEKs third message is: we were

terrorists but we are now rehabilitated from terrorists to

parliamentarians. Is this what Maryam Rajavi means by

the Third Way? Are we supposed to not notice that three

different versions of the MEK identity are being

promoted simultaneously in Iraq, America and Europe?

Mr Rajavi, just because you have your head in the sand, doesnt mean we cant see your bottom.

    Page 5U P T O D A T E N 0 . 4 5 / J U L Y 2 0 1 2

What Rajavi doesnt appear to understand is that what he

must think is his brilliant and sophisticated trick to save his

cult is risibly exposed by its own stupidity.

Does it not occur to Rajavi at all that everyone else can see

the totally bizarre and unhelpful contradictions in the

campaign messages he has lodged in the three countries

where his fate is being decided. Has he not heard of the

internet or media scrutiny, or simple critical thinking?

In Iraq Rajavi has told his followers that when they arrive in

Camp Liberty and they are taken for the UNHCR refugee

determination interviews in which they are alone with no

MEK oversight they must refuse to disavow their MEK

membership otherwise the UN will send them out of Iraq

where they will be hunted down by the Iranian regime and

killed. As a result only a small number of those transferred to

Camp Liberty have allowed themselves to be eligible for

refugee status by renouncing their membership of the MEK.

Regardless of the motive, Rajavis message in Iraq is clear:

the MEK is an illegal but fully trained paramilitary (terrorist)

group which must stay intact in order to continue its aim to

violently overthrow the ruling system in Iran.

In America however, the completely opposite message isbeing rolled out in a massively funded propaganda campaign

which aims to convince the State Department, on no evidence

except repeated lies, that the MEK has never been a terrorist

entity, that the six Americans killed in Iran in the 1970s were

killed by an offshoot of the real MEK, and the subsequent

deaths of 16,000 Iranians and 25,000 Iraqis either never

happened or were the work of a different MEK or was the

result of legitimate freedom fighting and that the original

terrorist designation in 1997 was made as a pragmatic gift to

the Reformist Iranians by the Clinton administration and that

the MEKs real identity is as a democratic, feminist, popular

opposition which will lead the Iranian nation in its desperate

    desire for regime change.

So, the message in America: we have not ever been and are

    not now terrorists.

Even more ludicrous then is that a third and different

message is being touted in Europe.

Perhaps in anticipation of an unwanted influx of former

residents of Camp Ashraf in their countries, the European

Union has begun to crack down on MEK activity there.Significantly, the MEK has been evicted from its office inside

the European Parliament and has had to establish lobbying

offices outside the parliament for its keenest advocates,

Mr Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the UNGeneral Secretary for Iraq and Head of the United Nations

Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), reported some facts

during the session of the UN Security Council regarding

MKO obstructing the evacuation of Ashraf garrison which

must be handed over to the government of

Iraq. Apparently this report did not please Massoud Rajavi

and consequently the so called National Council of

Resistance issued a statement and indicated some

accusations against Mr. Kobler and the Government of

    Iraqi.

Mr Kobler advised the UNSC that the patience of the GOI

is reaching to its limit and they have every right to impose

their rule over their sovereignty and they can no longer

close their eyes to the fact that the group is breaking

national and international laws and is not cooperating.

Sahar Family Foundation has written a letter to Mr.

Kobler regarding the MKO statement which comes below

    to explain some facts:

United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI)United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI)United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI)United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI)

Dear Martin KoblerDear Martin KoblerDear Martin KoblerDear Martin Kobler

Immediately following your report to the UN

Security Council, the MEK issued a statement on

21 July 2012. You had explained that the MEK was

obstructing the evacuation of Camp Ashraf which

should have been handed over to the Government

of Iraq by 20 July. You advised the UNSC that the

patience of the GOI is reaching its limit and they

have every right to impose Iraqi sovereignty over

the camp and they can no longer be expected to

close their eyes to the fact that the MEK is breakingnational and international law by not cooperating.

The MEK statement claims that Martin Koblers

report to the UNSC against the Mojahedin of Ashraf is at the

disposal of violence and suppression and has accused the

GOI of being responsible for the deadlock in the procedure of

    the evacuation of Ashraf garrison.

Everyone knows and everyone except those who have some

interests with the cult admits that no one except Rajavi

desires violence and suppression and it has been clearly

demonstrated that Rajavi is doing his best to lead the

situation towards violent clashes. He wants to pretend that

the MEK is being suppressed and then try to find excuses to

    keep Ashraf.

As you have emphasized in your report, at the moment

UNAMI and the GOI have no direct and systematic contactwith the inhabitants of Liberty and Ashraf. The leaders of

the cult claim that the GOI has not fulfilled its commitments.

But first the GOI has no duty toward those who have

cooperated with Saddam Hussein in creating massacres in

Iraq and second as far as the individual residents are

concerned the maximum medical and welfare facilities have

been provided for them. Rajavi insists that all the

necessities be given only to him - as was the deal under

Saddam Hussein and that he not be obliged to give

anything to the residents but keep these necessities for

    himself and his close aides.

The most amazing argument that Rajavi makes is that he

claims Liberty is like a prison. According to all those who

managed to escape from the cult, Ashraf garrison is the

most notorious prison in the world since the prisoners have

not been allowed any sort of contact with the outside world,

even their families, for decades. This is the case in Camp

Liberty as well and Rajavis loyalists there impose all kinds

of artificial boundaries on the inhabitants.

Rajavi has proven so far that he does not understand thelanguage of kindness and tolerance and of course tries to

incite the Iraqis into violent clashes and get more people

killed to feed his propaganda machine. His act is like

someone who puts his foot against the door of your house

and doesnt let you close it and if you try to push, he cries

that you are hurting his foot.

The truth is that Massoud Rajavi still insists that only he

can talk on behalf of all the MEK victims and hostages. Yet,

all those who managed to escape from both Ashraf and

Liberty admit that they had no idea about the outside worldand they were afraid of everything outside the organization

and so accepted every possible risk when they decided to

flee. They all share the same belief that if enough and

correct information be given to the members of the MEK in

Iraq, they will surely have maximum cooperation with both

    the UNAMI and the GOI.

The Sahar Family Foundation once again stresses its

principal request - which only Rajavi is refusing. All the

victims and hostages both in Ashraf and in Liberty must

have the right to visit their suffering families freely andindependently. So long as this important matter has not

happened, Rajavi is able to demand his ransom for the

hostages and will not give in.

based National Council of Resistance of Iran, has ramped

up its public-relations campaign to convince the outside

world that it is the biggest Iranian opposition group, one

dedicated to the values of Western liberal democracy. (It

just happens to have a parliament-in-waiting and a

president-electRajavi, of course.) To bolster its case, the

MEK inflames fears of a nuclear Iran, consistently

claiming that the country has an ongoing nuclear-weapons

    program, notwithstanding the opposite, unanimous

opinionof U.S., European, and Israeli officials and the

Iranian supreme leaders fatwaagainst building one.

It remains to be seen if the MEKs costly lobbying

campaign will pay off. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

has until October 1 to decide whether to keep the MEK on

the foreign terrorist organization list; otherwise, a federal

court will automatically delist it. Thats just a few short

weeks before the presidential election. Republican

candidate Mitt Romney claimed in December that he had

never heard of the MEK. Nevertheless, he is using the

question of Iranian nukeskept in the public eye by the

MEK and its shillsin a desperate effort to make

President Barack Obama look weak on national-security

issues. Romney has also surrounded himself with a

hawkish national-security team that includes several MEKsupporters, such as Bush administration veterans like

former U.N. Representative John Bolton, who believes that

engagement with Tehran is delusional and that the only

real alternative to a nuclear Iran is pre-emptive military

forcethe sooner the better. Boltons writings suggest

that he hopes that the so-called P5+1 talks over Irans

nuclear program will fail. (The next round of negotiations is

    next week.)

But the MEKs supporters and other hawks who insist on

wanting regime change in Iran need to understand that, inthis case, the enemy of my enemy isnot my friend. The

MEK is a bad ally. It has been a bad ally in peace, and it

would be a bad ally in war and reconstruction. Aligning

ourselves with the MEK would undermine any attempt at

credibility among Iranians because it would make us look

like dupes. The public figures who have spoken in support

of the MEK are dangerously mistaken when they describe

the group as a force for good, and the best hope we

have (Rendell) and a massive worldwide movement for

liberty in Iran (Gingrich). On the contrary, this deceptive

foreign cult is pouring millions of dollars into an effort to

steer the United States toward war.

You would imagine that, when offered a (now retracted) deal like

that from Hillary Clinton give up Camp Ashraf to give us some

grounds to take you off the US terror list bearing in mind the

concomitant Patriot Act funding that would surely follow - Massoud

Rajavi would grab it with both hands, vacate the camp and make

plans to move his army to a similar camp in another country

    neighbouring Iran.

Instead, Rajavi, ungrateful cur that he is, has again completely

misread the situation and lost the only opportunity he had of

redeeming his organisation and giving it a future. His infantile inability

to give up what he holds in his hand on the promise of some greater

gift held out to him is reminiscent of his reaction during the first Gulf

War when he ignored covert attempts by the West to get him to leave

Iraq and disassociate from Saddam Husseins regime. Instead, Rajavi

stayed put and stained the MEK forever with the massacre of

thousands of Kurdish and Shiite civilians in an effort to sustain his

    benefactor in power.

Blinded and dazzled by the smoke and mirrors of his own deceptive

tricks, Rajavi simply cannot see what to the rest

of the world is completely obvious. Now he has

not only bitten the hand that could have fed him,

but has gnawed and gnarled it to the point of

leaving top US diplomat Daniel Fried reportedly

furious. Perhaps he has spent so long sitting in

his bunker in Camp Ashraf peering out at ants

and lizards that he could not see the big picture,

which was the rescue and resurrection of the

MEK by Western power brokers, and has instead

held out for some petty deals to do with the

transfer of air-conditioning units and personalcars and planting trees at a temporary camp.

We know that his aim is to stay in Iraq as long as

possible in the hope a new dawn will arise and

the MEK will carry on as before. But we also know

this is impossible and that the unspoken offer of

a move to another country was his best, now

    missed, opportunity.
