The month of April was full of interesting events and outings for the Neigh- bors. On April 11, our mem- bers had an oppor- tunity to learn and prac- tice calligraphy with Kitty Pechet, one of Art Explorations Interest Groups Leaders and renowned local artist. Kitty presented the basic calligraphy alphabet and showed a beginner technique that can be used to practice making letter forms. The attendees learned about the tools and materials every calligrapher needs, how to hold and use a pen when doing calligraphy and, some simple rules to enjoy a visual harmony. Due to the high interest weve offered a second class on May 6 for all members who were on the waiting list. This time the theme was 13th century French manuscript handwring and illuminaon in honor of Notre Dame Cathe- dral in Paris”. Kiy is considering a six weeks course in Calligraphy in the fall for all the Neighbors who were interested to connue mastering this art. On April 24, our popular Out and About Interest Group visited Bauhaus Exhibit at the Harvard Arts Museums on a guided tour and on May 2nd they were at the Open Rehearsal of the Boston Symphony Orches- tra! They are working on one last event of this season- tour of the Gropius House. Stay tuned for details! Julia Cai, NeighborsEvents Commiee Chair con- ducted our tradional Tea Tasng event on May 3rd by presenng rare teas from China and Taiwan. Tour New England Light Houses Many of New England’s picturesque lighthouses open their doors for tours in May. These little castles keep stories of sunken ships, Revolutionary battles, desperate drownings, daring rescues, and keepers’ isolated lives. Climb up spiraling stairs and a steep ladder and through a tight hatch into the lamp room and claim your re-ward: a breathtaking 360-degree view. Here are links to some of them. Block Island Southeast Light in Block Island, RI. Sitting on the Mohegan Bluffs, this red-brick lighthouse and its attached keeper’s quarters, built in High Victorian Gothic style, were an architectural showcase for the US Lighthouse Bureau. Nauset Light at Eastham, MA. You'll find this iconic lighthouse pictured on Cape Cod Potato Chips. It will be open May 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. for tours. Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, Maine. This lighthouse, established in 1827 and replaced in 1835, is located in Pemaquid Point Light-house Park, which opens May 8. Park hours are Mondays through Fridays from 9am to 5pm. Race Point Lighthouse in Provincetown,

Small Steps, Giant Leaps - Apollo 11 Houghton Library invites you to celebrate the fiftieth anni-versary of that remarkable achievement as the last step in a long series that stretches back through the centuries to the beginnings of the modern scientific understanding of our place in the universe. On display are landmarks in the history of science from Houghton Library’s collections—such as first editions of Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton—together with rarely exhibited highlights from a private spaceflight collection, including artifacts used during the Apollo 11 mission and on

the moon itself by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Al-drin. Together, these objects illuminate the path of research and discovery that made Apollo 11 possible. The exhibition is free and open to the public until August 3.
