THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR
Did you know that public libraries are prohibited by law
from purchasing with property-tax dollars many things
that we’ve all come to expect in our libraries?
To fill what would otherwise be a void, the Friends of
the Lawrenceburg Library District was formed nearly
20 years ago. Friends of the Library is a grass-roots
non-profit organization whose members volunteer their
support for our libraries in many ways, including
fund-raising efforts.
For example, Friends of the Library funds the entire
spectrum of library programs and activities so that no
one ever has to pay a fee to participate and enjoy.
For example, Friends funding includes craft and cooking
class supplies, speaker and program presenter costs,
refreshments, film licensing, and many costs associated
with reading programs for children, teens and adult.
As needs and ideas arise, Friends also purchases items
such as furniture and equipment, educational toys and
furnishings, and plantings for entries and courtyards.
Friends raises money through dues and donations; the
collection and sale of used books, magazines, DVDs
and CDs; and the Great Bake Sale.
The organization will hold its final
2018 meeting at 5 PM Tuesday,
December 4, in the Ewbank
Meeting Room at Lawrenceburg Library. Please join us
there and learn how you can contribute a little or a lot,
whatever works for you … time, talent, money, leader-
ship, discussion and decision-making about how the
library uses Friends dollars.
See you there!
