    INT - CARRYS BURDEN - NIGHT

    The walls are bleak and the color-tone muted inside the gothbar.

    THE OWNER is dressed up like a classic vampire and has dull,

    dim eyes.

    Rikke is frantically drawing on a napkin, turning symbols ofChristmas into the emo motiff. Candy Canes become sharp andelves have jagged teeth.

    The owner nods like she is speaking to his soul.

    INT - THE SERPENT - NIGHT

    Nerds and live-action role players abound. Its like alittle mini comic-con and everyone is their favorite comic orvideo game hero.

    Rikke is fencing with a duct-tape foam sword against a boydressed like Wolverine.

    Harold is talking to SERPENT OWNER while they watch thesparring match go on.

    Harold gestures to the outside, the ceiling, and makes aits snowing gesture with his fingers.

    The owner nods, they shake hands.

    Then a drunken spectator comes in and starts beating

    Wolverine with a plastic scythe.

    Rikke grabs Harold and they get the hell out of there in ahurry.

    EXT - ASTORIA - NIGHT

    Theyre still running, faster and faster, laughing andsmiling as they do.

    Behind them a group of drunken zombies chase them.

    Rikke turns and puts her hands on her cheek, screaming inmock horror.

    She then puts the back of her hand to her forehead to faint.

    Harold throws her over his shoulder and keeps going.

    INT - TULIP FUTURES - NIGHT

    Its a pastel painted world, and everyones a barbie girl inthis sorority bar.

    The owner is dressed like a pretty pink princess attemptingto recapture her youth.

    Rikke is making a point, gesturing with two hands, theprincess into what shes saying.

    Rikke gestures behind herself and thats when she spins.

    Harold is still carrying her. The Owners husband is in theother direction, and theyre switching off between them.

    They shake hands with the owner couple, then spin to shakehands again before he carts her off.

    EXT - ASTORIA AVE - NIGHT

    The crowds are winding down a bit, people heavily imbibed andleaning on brick walls and surfaces for dear life.

    A coffee cart vendor is out selling various easy to eatgoods.

    Harold takes a kabob and Rikke takes a hot dog.

    They navigate through the crowd close to one another.Someone closer even than when she clutched his arm at thefrat bar.

    Harold takes the top piece of meat from the kabob and uses

    the skewer to poke her in the ass as he chews.

    She narrows her eyes and savagely bites into the hotdog witha glower, tearing the meat off with a back and forth motion.

    They laugh, he puts his hand on her ass and they keep going.

    INT - THE DOMAIN - NIGHT

    Theres only a few patrons left, many of them holding mugs ofcoffee instead of steins.

    One room is cordoned off and the DOMAIN OWNER is sweeping up.Hes flanked by Rikke and Harold, who hes turning to listento as one talks where the other one stops.

    INT - RANCH HANDS - NIGHT

    Theres a picnic bench-like table in the middle of the bar.Various women are dancing on top of it. One of them is theBeauty Queen with all eyes on her.

    All except Harolds, who is looking at Rikke as she hardcorebooty shakes. When she sees hes staring at her she winksand does a special little dip move, just for him.

    Harold exhales and turns to owner. He casually gestures withhis hand to the outside world.

    Theres just a little less energy left in the night.

    EXT - ASTORIA AVE - NIGHT

    A cowboy hat and a long, pointy princess hat are abandoned onthe street.

    Rikke and Harold survey them at a distance and then look toone another.

    INT - NOBLE SEAMSTRESS - NIGHT

    The cowboy hat and princess cap are donned. The NOBLE OWNERnods to the two of them with a smile before making her way toanother customer.

    They clink their drinks together and spin around.

    Shes wearing the cowboy hat and hes a pretty princess.

    EXT - ASTORIA AVE - NIGHT

    The two are moving down the street in a state of elation.Their steps are light.

    Theres no crowd any longer, the street having only a fewmembers in it, all of whom seem drunk or near it. Clowns,zombies and frat brothers litter the streets.

    As they move past down the street the Slovenly Brotherstreaks past them and cops chase after.

    They stop to kiss against a wall, her hands on his face andhis on her hips.

    Then they continue on. Slovenly Frat is handcuffed in a pairof tighty-whities and is in the process of being placed in apaddy wagon.

    Inside are are two Poodle Girls, the Clown, three drunkzombies and Frat Guy, all of whom see perfectly fine withbeing carted off en masse.

    As the large metal door closes an enthuastic Woo can beheard from within.

    INT - THE CROWN - NIGHT

    The lights are still on, but nobodys home. The bar isturned down for the night and ready to be opened tomorrow.

    Harold takes her by the hand to his office and presses theplay button on his answering machine.

    RIKKEYou have an answering machine. Andyou give me shit over not changingmy number? Are you a timetraveler?

    HAROLDShhh.

    SHANER (O.S.)I foretold it and it came to be! Isee through the veil! No longerwill I be--

    Harold stops the machine and they look to one another andkiss.

    Rikke breaks it and looks to the cork board and picks out therecipe for Hal beer. She touches it gently.

    RIKKEIs this what you mentioned?

    HAROLDWhen?

    RIKKEAt Phat City. On stage.

    HAROLDYeah.

    She looks around.

    RIKKEShow me where.

    INT - CROWN BASEMENT - DAY

    They walk down the steps, the lights already on. Its clean,almost spotless with several large copper kettles. Nothingis running except a small mini-fridge in the back.

    Harold moves towards the fridge while Rikke surveys the room.

    As he opens the door Alexandria appears from a corner. Shedoes not make eye contact and simply walks up the stairsmechanically.

    Tom comes out from the corner a second later.

    HAROLDTom.

    TOM

    Harold.

    He sees Rikke.

    TOM (CONTD)Milady.

    Tom climbs the stairs.

    RIKKEArent you mad?

    HAROLD

    Im more impressed than anything.

    RIKKEWho was that girl?

    HAROLDThe babysitter.

    Inside the mini-fridge at three Hal beers, loving stockednext to one another. Harold pulls out two and pops the capsoff with a mounted church key.

    She takes a beer and pulls on it, sampling it.

    RIKKEI like it.

    HAROLDYoure lying.

    RIKKEIm not. Its a good beer. Itseven.

    She looks around the room again, all the equipment, themechandise, everything ready to go.

    RIKKE (CONTD)Whyd you stop?

    HAROLDWhat?

    RIKKEWhy did you stop? You have thisequipment, you have the barupstairs making money, you had theambition. Whyd you stop?

    HAROLDPeople didnt like it?

    RIKKEI understand why it didnt sell.Im asking you why you stopped.Why didnt you say fuck them andmake another beer?

    HAROLDI liked this one.

    RIKKE

    Thats it?

    HAROLDThis was the beer I wanted to make.

    RIKKEI dont think thats true.

    HAROLDNo?

    RIKKENo. Tell me.

    HAROLDIt was the first thing I evertried. I researched it, I boughtthe vats, I brought it all in and Iwas so sure it was going to work.

    They both take a pull.

    RIKKESo, basically, you failed and thenyou decided to pout about it?

    HAROLDMore or less.

    RIKKEWhat would have been a success?

    HAROLDIf everyone who tasted it neverwanted another beer again.

    RIKKEYoure aiming too low. They shouldhave tasted it and carried you offon their shoulders while giving youhead. Can I tell you what yourproblem is?

    HAROLDCould I stop you?

    RIKKENo. You over think things.

    HAROLDWell. Id tell you what I thoughtabout that but, you know...

    She laughs and he takes the oppurtunity to push her upagainst a wall and they kiss hard.

    THE CROWN

    And kiss.

    ASTORIA OUTSIDE THE CROWN

    And kiss.

    THE FRONT OF HER APARTMENT

    And kiss.

    INSIDE HER BEDROOM

    And kiss. And strip. And fuck.

    EXT - ASTORIA AVE - DAY

    Rikke is dressed sharply. Shes wearing expensive heels andwomans blazer. She looks like a captain of industry.

    Her heeels click-clack on the pavement and the city is backto normal. Autumn is here and there is a chill in the air.This is a serious town that runs on the lifeblood of tourismand everyone is in it together.

    She moves into a building with named Tourist Bureau.

    INT - CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY

    Its a bigger turnout than expected, nearly two dozen barowners sit and scribble on a piece of paper with Camille andRikke standing in front of them.

    Camille is shooting daggers at Rikke as a box is passedaround and the paper slipped inside.

    COUNTING STATION

    Nine votes in each pile and the tenth comes in for Camille.

    CONFERENCE ROOM

    Camille is warm in everything but the eyes. She hugs, sheshakes hands.

    CAMILLEIts such an honor. I cant beginto tell you all and I just hope Ican follow the great success ofthis crawl.

    She walks over to Rikke who extends a hand but Camille hugs

    her instead and breaths low fire through her throat.

    CAMILLE (CONTD)I have to give you two weeks but Iwant you gone today.

    She pulls back her eyes twinkling. A crocodiles grin.

    Rikke looks to Harold who is dumbstruck.

    Rikke feigns a smile in return but exits quickly through adoor on the opposite side of the room from him.

    EXT - ASTORIA FOUNTAIN - DAY

    She cant move faster than him, her shorter legs, her heels.

    She knows that, but shes moving as quickly as she cananyway.

    When he calls out her name she takes a deep breath andprepares herself.

    HAROLDStop.

    RIKKEHarold...

    HAROLDWhat is happening?

    RIKKEI just--I cant.

    HAROLDI thought you didnt even careabout this job?

    RIKKEWell, I do, alright?

    They look to one another for understanding.

    HAROLDAre you going to cry?

    Rikke growls and punches him in the arm.

    RIKKENo, Im not going to cry youworthless caveman!

    HAROLD

    Okay!

    She strikes him again.

    RIKKEYou are like this ladder of stupid.Every time I think there cant beanother step...

    She paces back and forth, hands out like claws and belts outa small, throaty scream.

    HAROLD

    Will you just talk to me?

    RIKKEI dont see the point, I dont seeit.

    HAROLDI want to help.

    RIKKEBecause thats worked out so far?

    HAROLDI cant keep apologizing.

    RIKKEAnd I cant keep pretending thatthis works out.

    She stops and looks to him, hands dropping to her side.

    RIKKE (CONTD)I like you. I do. I like you verymuch.

    HAROLDI like you, too.

    RIKKEI know.

    She smiles and its sadder than tears.

    RIKKE (CONTD)But thats not enough. I have tomove on. If I kept the job maybethings would be different.

    HAROLDWhat do you mean?

    RIKKE(shaking her head)

    It doesnt matter.

    HAROLDWhy wont you talk to me?

    RIKKEBecause everything you ask ispointless. All Im trying to do isget you to see it.

    HAROLDSo the only thing I can do foryou...

    RIKKEIs to say goodbye.

    HAROLDAnd theres nothing that--

    RIKKETheres nothing.

    We see the real Rikke for the first time. She is resolute.She is taller than her size. She is invincible in all waysbut her loneliness.

    HAROLDI was getting tired of chasing youaround anyway.

    He sits on the fountains edge.

    RIKKEI dont blame you. Even if it waseasy with your long legs.

    She sits down besides him. They stare ahead together.

    HAROLDNothing ever actually works outlike you plan.

    RIKKENot a damn thing.

    HAROLDAnd no matter what happens, whatnew thing enters your life, youalways go back home. To where youwere.

    RIKKE(whispering)

    Truer than you know.

    He turns to look at her.

    HAROLDAnything at all?

    She turns to look at him and smiles, shakes her head. Shestruly flattered.

    RIKKE

    Nothing.

    HAROLDWell then, I have one final thingto say.

    Rikke braces herself.

    RIKKEGo ahead.

    HAROLDIm glad I met you.

    RIKKEWhy?

    HAROLDI have absolute no idea.

    He rises up and offers her a hand, she takes it and shakesonce shes at full height.

    HAROLD (CONTD)But I am.

    They look at each other for a long while before parting, eachwalking a different direction.

    INT - CROWN BASEMENT - DAY

    Harold is sitting, legs akimbo and eyes narrowed on thebiggest vat in the room, staring it down like its tauntinghim.

    Then he rises and moves to the minifridge and pulls out thelast Hal.

    He turns the fridge off and then unplugs it and makes his wayupstairs.

    INT - THE CROWN - DAY

    Theres a few patrons around, and both Shaner and Marlene arebehind the bar. They look close, cute. Happy.

    Harold makes his way past them to his office where he peelsthe label off the Hal and pins it underneath the recipe.

    Marlene witnesses.

    MARLENEIm really sorry.

    HAROLD

    What, do you live here now?

    MARLENEReally. I am.

    HAROLDIt happens. I dont know why ithappens, but it does.

    MARLENEIf it makes you feel any bettershes miserable.

    HAROLDWhen women talk about feelings itmakes my brain feel like its beinghit with other parts of my brain.

    MARLENEYou two are a lot alike.

    HAROLDWell, since you started offinsulting me...

    MARLENEI dont know two people could

    listen to each other--

    HAROLDOh shut up.

    Marlene smiles and looks at the cork board with Harold.

    MARLENEIf she didnt have to leave, youdstill be together.

    HAROLDShe doesnt have to leave. Nobody

    is kicking her out.

    Marlene surveys him, hesitant, then she decides.

    MARLENEYes, they are. She was here on awork visa. Her tourist licenseexpired.

    Harold turns to look at her.

    HAROLDAre you saying--

    MARLENEI dont know how I could make thatsimpler. She actually has to leavethe country. You egomaniac.

    Harold sets the Hal down and moves out of the bar in a flash.

    EXT - ASTORIA AVE - DAY

    Harold runs at full speed down the street.

    The cafes all have pumpkin specials. The stores have fallsales. The bowling alley has balls sprayed orange.

    This is a town that knows what it is and he is a man runningthrough it, totally out place.

    OUTSIDE HER APARTMENT

    He leaps up the steps and pounds on her door with the full ofhis fist, drawing deep breath in.

    She answers, looking sullen but reserved to fight.

    RIKKEWhat are you--

    HAROLD

    Skip it.

    RIKKEWhat?

    HAROLDLets skip this part where youwonder why and how and what nextand I stumble through it. Justinvite me in.

    Rikke steps back from the door and he makes his way into...

    HER APARTMENT

    RIKKECan I get you something--

    He puts his hands on her hips and pushes her to the hallwayand against the wall. Shes wide eyed and stunned, andsuddenly breathing as heavily as he is.

    They kiss, long and full and deep.

    RIKKE (CONTD)While this is very sweet its also

    just a little bit rapey.

    HAROLDShut up.

    RIKKEOkay.

    They kiss again and he pulls her up against the wall and theykiss some more. Shes looking down at him now.

    HAROLDI dont care, alright? Youreleaving soon, I dont care. I wantto spend every moment I can withyou. You going to stop me?

    RIKKENo.

    HAROLDWomen are the most insane creatureson the planet.

    RIKKEWere awful.

    (beat)So whats the plan.

    HAROLDPlay it by ear.

    RIKKEOkay.

    She lets her guard down, she embraces him with both hands,they kiss like its the end of the world.

    INT - AIRPORT - DAY

    Theyre walking at the point of no return where he cantcross. She does, and turns around and walks backwards. Sheseems happy, or at least content. Its bittersweet.

    RIKKEDo what makes you happy! Im gladI met you, too!

    And then shes gone, lost in the crowd.

    INT - THE CROWN - NIGHT

    Shaner is packing the night, putting chairs atop the tablesand ready to leave when Harold moves through the front door.

    SHANERAll straight women are crazy.

    HAROLDJust making conversation?

    SHANERIts a posit. Im positing thatall straight women are crazy.

    HAROLDWhy not just all women?

    Harold moves to his office and takes the recipe for the beerdown and opens the Hal.

    SHANERThat beer is warm.

    SHANERStraight women because the gay onesdont give me a lot of personal

    experience.

    HAROLDSo is this a new theory or--

    Harold puts the beer down on the bar top to pick up a pen andstart writing on the back of the recipe.

    SHANERNo, its a continuation.

    HAROLDSo all straight women are bi and

    crazy?

    SHANERWhat Im saying.

    HAROLDYou really want this to be the lastsubject that youre totally wrongabout?

    Shaner goes cautious, still. He moves to bar.

    SHANER

    What do you mean?

    Harold spins the recipe back to Shaner and puts the pen bsideit.

    HAROLDSign it.

    Shaner reads it as Harold shoots the beer and polishes it offbefore he moves to his office to start taking everything offthe cork board.

    SHANERYou cant.

    HAROLDJust did.

    SHANERI dont, I dont understand.

    HAROLDI think you do, or else why wouldyou look so god damn dumbstruck.

    SHANERHarry...

    HAROLDI dont hear scribbling.

    He emerges from the office with an armful of pictures andmemories. This is his life to date. This is all there is.

    SHANERI dont know what to say.

    HAROLDSay, If I shortchange you one centI know youll kill me and get away

    with it because youre so muchsmarter. Then sign it.

    SHANERHave you thought this through?

    HAROLDYou know what? I really havent.

    SHANERAre you drunk?

    HAROLD

    Not more than usual.

    Harold finishes the last Hal and throws it away. Shanertakes the pen and a deep breath.

    HAROLD (CONTD)And every woman isnt anythingbesides a woman. Thats all theyhave in common. Nothing else.

    Shaner signs.

    SHANERAbout the Tom clause...

    HAROLDIron clad. Someone has to distracthim. Im terrified if you donthell board a plane and murder me.

    SHANERThank you.

    HAROLDYep.

    He throws his keys on the bar top and picks up the cache ofpapers and pictures. He looks around like hes seeing theplace for the first time.

    He walks out and to the front door.

    SHANERWait, what do you mean board aplane?

    But Harold just smiles and walks out into the night.

    ONE YEAR LATER

    INT - THE CROWN - NIGHT

    A princess and a cowboy walk in and make their way up to thebar where Shaner smiles politely and waits for their order.

    Marlene is behind the bar, wiping it down, looking at Shanerand smiling.

    The cowboy and princess turn to one another, but its notHarold and Rikke, just two patrons. The cowboy holds up twofingers.

    Shaner turns to pour and an infant is strapped to his back.Just a little thing, made up to look like a zombie-cheerleader.

    Marlene kisses and nuzzles him before Shaner turns to deliverthe beer.

    Tom is doing trivia in the middle of the room where a groupof young women are looking at him like hes the mostterrifying thing theyve ever seen.

    Slovenly Brother looks rather put together in a neat costume,and hes with a very conservatively dressed Beauty Queen.They sit close to one another.

    INT - CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY

    Alexandria is smiling and shaking hands with business owners,neatly dressed and looking confident.

    Behind her are two poster boards addressing the town Circusevent. One has a clown tent with a slash through it. Theother a Roman arena with a check mark.

    Camille politely smiles, but when she turns her back to thecrowd and walks off her face falls and she looks to be on theverge of tears.

    INT - A MODEST LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

    Theres a small, close-knit crowd of people. Its a EuropeanHalloween, and nobody is in costume.

    Except two people sitting on a couch, Rikke in Harolds lap.

    Shes dressed like a Fortune Teller. Hes dressed like aBeggar.

    They look ridiculous and like they dont fit in, or fittogether at all. Like they still dont belong.

    But they also look happy, and they are only looking at oneanother.

    They can barely stop laughing long enough to kiss.

    And as soon as that kiss is broken, they keep laughing.

    The laugh all the way to the black screen.

    FADE OUT
