Manufacturers of reduction gears, rudder propellers and bow thrustershave demanding requirements when itcomes to gear oils. On the one hand, these oils must perform in plain androlling bearings as well as in gears.Multiple disk clutches may also be part of the design. On the other, reli-able operation of the gears will alsodepend on the tightness of the shaftseals.

If the turning shaft or propeller shaft of a rudder propeller or a bow thrusteris not sufficiently tight, water may enterthe gear oil. In a mineral gear oil, evena low water content may cause rollingbearings failure or damage to the toothflanks. For the repair of these seals, theship must normally be dry-docked,leading to high repair costs and loss of turnover.

For this reason, Klüber Lubricationdevelops gear oils that are particu-larly well compatible with the sealingmaterials used, thus ensuring longseal and gear life.

There are four basic types of gear oilcomposition:

❑ mineral oil or

❑ synthetic oils such as poly-alphaolefins, (PAOs)

❑ ester oil and

❑ polyglycol oils

Closed gears / rudder propellers / bow thrusters

Synthetic oils offer a number ofadvantages over mineral oils:

❑ High thermal stability andresistance to oxidation

❑ Low change of viscosity overtemperature

❑ Low friction coefficients at teeth

❑ Good wear protection in bearings and gears

❑ Good load-carrying capacity of bearings and gears

❑ Low residue formation

Another key benefit of synthetic oils is the reduction of service intervals.Because lower friction coefficientsattained with the synthetic gear oilslead to less friction heat, reducing inturn the thermal stress acting on thelubricant film and the teeth is reducedas well. At the same time, syntheticgear oils have a higher thermal stabil-ity; oil aging progresses at a slowerpace than with mineral oils. Conse-quently, oil change intervals can beextended several-fold. This means less impact on the environment and a reduction of operating costs throughout the gear’s service life.

For gears that have to be tightenedagainst sea water (e.g. those of rudderpropellers, bow thrusters, special gearsin dredgers), the ability of polyglycoloils to absorb water without affectingthe load-carrying capacity of the toothflanks and the bearing life may be ofadvantage.

For the many demanding applicationsfound in gears in the maritime sector,Klüber offers a range of oils that meetseven the most stringent requirements.

Open spur gears are often found inhoisting winches, for instance on off-shore oil rigs and ships.

The requirements to be met by thelubricant have increased in the pastfew years due to higher winch forces. The winches are usually only operatedfor a short time, after which the lubri-cant has to stay on the gear teeth andprotect them reliably against corrosion.Unsuitable lubricants do not meetthese requirements and have oftencaused major problems such as fret-ting or corrosion, possibly followed bygear failure.

Having worked extensively with OEMs,we have developed a comprehensiverange of products for their applicationareas.

Klüberfluid C-F 3 ULTRA is a productwe often recommend for open gears

Large gear rim/pinion drives on winches

on winches. It is a brown-colored oper-ational lubricant for large girth gear dri-ves and is based on a new generationof synthetic hydrocarbons and mineraloil. It is particularly resistant to highpressure and ensures excellent wearprotection. Klüberfluid C-F3 ULTRA ispart of the Klüberfluid series. In addi-tion, we offer the GRAFLOSCON serieswhich includes other running-in andoperational lubricants based onmineral oil and graphite.

Klüber offers running-in lubricants forinitial gear operation, and our repairlubricants smoothen tooth flanks andreduce residual roughness. Klüberrepair lubricants remove material fromtooth flanks showing a certain degreeof damage, thus increasing the load-carrying percentage.

Ships maneuvering frequently withoutthe assistance of tugs (e.g. offshoresuppliers, Ro-Ro ferries) or those thatare required to run with a minimum ofvibration and noise (cruise ships) aremore and more often fitted with poddrives. These pods are mounted to thestern section of the ship and containthe propeller as well as the electricdrive motor with a short transmissionshaft. Because the pods can berotated by 360°, the ship does notneed a rudder and can be maneuveredby turning the pods.

While the pod drives offer technicalbenefits, however a high degree ofreliability is essential for their use. Of

Pod drives

particular importance in this context isthe choice of the right lubricant for thepropeller shaft bearing, thrust bearing, slewing bearing and the elastomerseals at both the turning shaft and the propeller shaft. The correct lubri-cant will extend component life andhelp to prevent premature failure, which can help minimize costly re-pairs as well as loss of revenue by the ship owner.

Klüber lubricants have been tried andtested in pod drives for several years, contributing decisively to the reliabilityof drive units in the offshore sector and on cruise ships.

For the reliable operation of compres-sors, the choice of the right lubricant is of utmost importance. Whether it isprocess gas or a refrigerant that isbeing compressed, the lubricating oilused will always have intense contactwith the gas. The individual nature ofthe gas flow found in an application istherefore a crucial criterion for theselection of an oil, on ships as well as on offshore oil rigs or on an FPSOvessel (Floating, Production, Storageand Offloading). In all of these applica-tions, availability and reliability of thecompressor and the process plant as a whole are of vital importance.

The lubrication of process gas com-pressors sometimes triggers complexand unpredictable reactions. Besideschemical reactions between the gasand the oil, the souring of oil, corrosionand sludge formation, there is also thepossibility of gas being dissolved in theoil, which may considerably reduce theoil's viscosity during operation.

Such reactions may have various graveconsequences for the operator: dam-age to bearings, rotors, piston rings orvalves, corrosion, solid or sludge

Compressors for processgas and refrigeration

residues, shorter oil change intervals, high oil consumption, foam formation,or even damage to the downstreamprocess catalyst. In addition, there may be elongated compressor stop-page and hence costly downtime ofthe production plant as a whole.

Consequently, the reliability and theproductivity of the process plantdepends to a great extent on the selec-tion of the right lubricating oil. Whenturning to Klüber, our customers are infor more than just the supply of an oil.Comprehensive knowledge in chem-istry, ample experience with practicalapplications as well as a programspecifically developed for the deter-mination of the solubility of gas in theoil enable the selection of an oil that is specifically suitable for your applica-tion. This increases the availability andreliability of the compressor as well as the productivity of the plant as awhole.

Klüber Summit compressor oils haveproven effective in various types ofcompressors for many years and con-tributed decisively to the availabilityand reliability of the plants concerned.

Page 11: Untitled

Application example:On shuttle tankers operating in the North Sea, operational reliability was increased significantly through the introduction ofcarefully selected compressor oils of the Klüber Summit series. Klüber Summit PGS 150 is used for the lubrication of thetwo VOC gas recovery compressors while the propane refrigeration compressor runs with Klüber Summit R 200. Theimproved utilization rate of the tankers saves the operator approx. € 100,000 in downtime per year.

Being vital machine elements, chainsare particularly dependent on optimumlubrication. Klüber offers special lubri-cants tailored to suit local conditions interms of relubrication intervals, chaincleaning intervals, lubricant quantityand lubrication system. The Klüber testrig facility operates a series of chaintest rigs to support the developmentand selection of ideal lubricants.Lubricants help to maintain the value of machine elements, a fact which isespecially important when expensivechains are concerned. Premature chain failure is usually due to inexpertlychosen lubricants and inadequatelubrication.

Application example for chainlubricants – balancing chains on oil rigsThe drilling equipment operated onoffshore oil rigs is exposed to constantsea level movements. Balancing chainsare used to compensate for the up-and-down movements, ensuring thatthey do not affect the drill bits belowthe sea floor – a vital prerequisite forsmooth and trouble-free drilling. Highloads, micro-movements and extreme

Chains

conditions in combination with anunsuitable lubricant can lead to shorter maintenance intervals, extended downtimes, prematurecomponent failure and considerablyshorter chain life.

With specialty products from Klüber, these chains will operate reliably andattain their maximum lifetime. Lowlubricant consumption helps to reduceoperating costs.

Cranes can be found both on shipsand in ports. Typical crane lubricationpoints include open gears in slewingrings, ropes, screws, bolts and pins.

Rolling bearings are another importantmachine element. They meet high re-quirements in terms of function andservice life. The lubricant’s purpose is to decrease friction and reduce orprevent wear. In maritime applications, water resistance is another key require-ment to be met since in many casesthe rolling bearing grease is in contactwith water.

Cranes / rolling bearings

Water penetrating into the bearing hasa negative impact on the grease’slubricity and can cause corrosion in thebearing. Optimum sealing and an anti-corrosion lubricant are critical in suchcases. When selecting a lubricant, itssealing effect is an important criterionapart from lubricity. Be sure to double-check compatibility with all materialsinvolved before application.

Lubricating greases are consideredresistant to water if their constituents(base oil, thickener, additives) neitherreact to nor dissolve in water. Thethickener is critical for water resis-tance.

Ropes are elements often used inconveyors. They are made up of wireswhich are combined in strands which,in turn, are twisted into ropes.

Depending on how they are used, adistinction is made between conveyorropes (cranes, winches, elevators),stationary ropes (anchor ropes), carry-ing ropes and sling ropes. Ropes aresubject to tensile load. Changes inrope direction result in pressure, tor-sion and bending loads on the wires.

The lubricant has the following tasks:

❑ protecting against wear

❑ protecting against corrosion

❑ ensuring required friction moments (friction pulley ropes)

Ropes

The lubricant can be applied by brushor special rope lubrication equipment. We recommend using NLGI 1 greasesin automatic lubricating equipment. A rule of thumb for lubricant quantity is 1–2% of the rope weight.

Lubricants for crown gear couplingshave to meet very special requirementsowing to the rotary movements per-formed by these couplings. An inade-quate lubricant can become dry, itsindividual ingredients can separate, orthe lubricant can simply disappearfrom the housing. Relubrication inter-vals may then be extremely short.

Lubricating oils or greases are used inthese applications, depending on thegear design.

Oils have the advantage of ensuring a permanent lubricant film on the

Crown gear couplings

tooth flanks because of their backflowbehavior, and they facilitate heat dis-sipation.

Lubricating greases generally permitperipheral speeds of up to 35 m/s.

Lubricants made by Klüber have beensuccessfully used in crown gear cou-plings on ships for several years.

The following Klüber products havebeen approved by important manufac-turers:

Twist locks are used on cargo ships to connect the individual containersduring transport. They are exposed to salt water and both high and lowtemperatures. They consist of manyindividual components, all of whichmust be operational at all times.

A lubricant used on twist locks mustensure reliable corrosion protection, and it must keep the componentsoperational over a long period of time.In addition, relubrication must be easyand relubrication intervals should belong. Together with a twist lock manu-facturer, Klüber has developed thefollowing solution:

Twist locks

First, use our CONTRAKOR A 100anticorrosion product on the individualtwist lock components, then initiallylubricate them with Klüberplex BE 11-462 before assembling theparts.

Use the spray version of Klüberplex BE 11-462 for easy relubrication.

In applications subject to extreme tri-bological conditions, very high surfacepressure at low speeds or extremelyhigh temperatures, as well as for run-ning-in processes in the mixed frictionregime, lubrication by pastes is oftenthe best choice.

Lubricating pastes facilitate theassembly and disassembly of positiveand power-locking connections, prevent corrosion and protect againstfretting rust, especially when used onfriction points subject to oscillations or vibrations. In addition, they allowpredefined tightening forces andpretensioning loads, and they help toavoid increased wear under high sur-face pressure and at low speeds.

Pastes also ensure easy and non-destructive component disassemblyand perform the function of a drylubricant or separating agent whenexposed to high temperatures.

Application example:Fasteners and screwed joints on ex-haust gas lines and turbochargers inDiesel engines that were lubricated withKlüberpaste HEL 46-450 prior to assem-bly can be undone easily and withoutdamage even after elongated exposureto high temperatures.

This helps to avoid time-consuming andcostly repairs.

A small percentage of the lubricantsused in the maritime industry may endup in the sea due to loss lubrication ortechnical damage. In particular thehydrocarbons contained in mineral oilproducts may have a toxic effect onbacteria, algae, fish and mammals.Rapidly biodegradable lubricants, bycontrast, cause little or no environmen-tal harm in the event of a leakage ordue to loss lubrication.

When we speak of the biologicaldegradability of a lubricant, we meanits capability to be decomposed bymicrobes and bacteria into carbondioxide CO2, water H2O and bio-mass.

Besides biological degradability, mini-mum quantity lubrication and long re-

lubrication intervals are factors thathelp to minimize environmental impact.Lubricants on a vegetable basis areoften not efficient enough under theseaspects, while high-performance lubri-cants of the Klüberbio series have ahigh resistance to aging and oxidationas long as they are at the friction point. When they leak into a biological en-vironment, however, they are rapidlydecomposed by microbes and bac-teria.

Wherever lubricants may come intocontact with sea water, rapidlybiodegradable lubricants are an eco-friendly alternative to mineral oil products.
