Waverley v UNSW Round Three of the competition saw UNSW Rugby up against Waverley Rugby Club. Local rivals Waverley provided some stiff competition, winning three of the day’s games. 4th grade again ran the superstars of Waverley close, 3rd grade continued their perfect start to the Blunt Cup, 1sts picked up their much needed first win of the season and the Halligan side reversed the result from last week.

UNSW v Oatley

Round Four of the competition sees UNSW Rugby up against Oatley Rugby Club. Oatley have experienced a stuttering start to their 2010 season but were strong contenders last year and will surely bring the fight to Uni whilst hosting Ladies Day. After becoming minor premiership winners in 2009, Oatley will be looking for revenge in the first grade match, having been knocked out in the Final by the black and gold army. The 3rd grade match up sees Uni’s table toppers against their second placed rivals.

There will be a minute’s silence being observed before the first grade in honour of Marie Gamble.

Game times and Duties The team duties are fairly basic, requiring:

Someone to be a touch judge, with a ball boy Two water boys Someone to run the kicking tee

A massive effort has been put in by a few to lay the foundations for a successful Ladies Day, now we need all hands on deck to help with setting up and entertaining the Ladies.

Waverley v UNSW - Match Reports

1st Grade – Waverley 17 (12) v UNSW 31 (17)

Tries: M Parish 2, David Collins, A Blundell Cons: M Parish 4 Pens: M Parish

3 – Max Parish, 2 – Jimmy Cain, 1 – Kieran Writer

Having lost their first two winnable games of the season, UNSW 1st grade travelled the short distance to local rivals Waverley. Last season’s matchups saw a win apiece for each team, and with a much changed side Uni were confident of kick starting their 2010 campaign.

A number of players had some 1st grade experience but were making their starting debuts this week, including hooker Josh Freedman, breakaways Steve Hickey and Ed Campbell, half back Jimmy Cain, inside centre Fraser Duddy and

wing Ed Mackey. In the absence of selected fly half Joel Ross, James “Dewey” Dutaillis was welcomed back into the starting line-up.

Uni started brightly with early pressure resulting in fullback Max “Powers” Parish slotting an angled penalty for an early 3-0 lead to Uni. Further sustained pressure by Uni saw a penalty awarded in front of the posts, up stepped Powers, missed! Filling in for the absent Jevan, Grumpy Bill called for the kicking duties to be taken over by Dewey. Sadly, soon after Dewey was seen and heard screaming like a little girl waiting for Justin Bieber, thrashing up and down in pain with a hurt finger, inducing his doting girlfriend to rush down the sideline to see what the fuss was about. Frankly, we were all a little embarrassed by the whole situation. Searching the sideline for a replacement, up stepped Barry “Shark” Heath, fresh from a full game with Seconds.

UNSW RUGBY NEWSLETTERISSUE 5 29 APRIL 2010

The boys from New South struggled to make their territory dominance count, allowing Waverley’s fullback to counter, gaining many yards on numerous occasions. Midway through the first period one break was stopped by last ditch defence, in came second rower Andrew Hazleton, but adjudged to have been offside to the breakdown. A straight yellow from the ref and a penalty try, very harsh with covering defence close by. Having scored no tries last season, Hazo was very keen to chalk this up as his first for 2010. The conversion gave Waverley a 7-3 lead.

With throwing from Josh and a greater presence in lineout jumping from Ed Campbell along with Kieran Writer in Hazo’s absence, Uni were able to not lose their flow. With Fraser Duddy making his trademark barnstorming charges from 12, Shark was able to open up the Waverley backline accompanied by great running from outside centre Dave “Ziplock” Norris. From phase play Shark spotted Powers hitting the line, threw the cut pass, with Powers darting on the angle and under the posts, making sure of the extras this time, Uni back in the lead 10-7.

Strong scrummaging from the front row with experienced prop Dave Davis and with his newly expanded waistline Matt Walden, Uni exerted great pressure on the opposition scrum, allowing number eight and captain Dave Collins to make great metres from the base. With a composed performance from the young Jimmy Cain, clean ball was provided to Shark, who after making a half break himself put Ziplock through a gaping hole close to the end of the period. After a 50m jinxing run beating about 5 defenders, Zippy was brought down metres from the line, offloading to Powers, who caught and dived over the line in one movement, a very Schroder-esque claimed try. The conversion made it 17-7 Uni.

With half time nearing, Uni were bogged down in their own 22 for the first time. Some poor defence allowed a strong run from one of their forwards to result in a try, bringing the score to 17-12 at the break. Half time inspiration from Grumps had Uni knowing the game was in their own hands but not yet won.

The second period saw possession and territory shared for the early parts, with neither team dominating. Again allowing Waverley to counterattack, Waverley were soon camped on the Uni line with multiple pick and drives. Courageous defence, with players across the line throwing their bodies at oncoming defenders was finally broken, with Waverley coming back to 17 all.

Soon after, a Uni lineout saw Ed Campbell dragged down onto his head by his opposite number, earning the Waverley player a deserved red card - fortunately Ed bravely played on. Uni were determined to remain calm, playing their same game to make the advantage count. With Shark carving up the backline and tactfully mixing with probing kicks into the Waverley corners, Uni used composed phase play to progress upfield. Recovering from last week’s fast ass, DC went on a trademark run smashing through the defence and over, with Powers adding the extras to take the game seemingly beyond Waverley at 24-17.

Gary Farrelly made a solid late performance on the wing, but it was on the other side that Uni saw one of Shark’s kicks bounce into Andrew Blundell’s path. With the speedster going over and with the conversion, Uni brought the score line to 31-17. Uni secured their first win of the season and their third bonus point, putting them in 5th position on the ladder.

Uni now face the imposing Oatley side with whom they encountered some fierce battles last season. With the cheering on from a bevvy of beauties from the sideline, Uni will be looking to make it two from two this weekend.

A final congratulations to Kenneth Northover on his wedding over the weekend.

2nd Grade - Waverley 29 v UNSW 10

Tries: D Jennings, G Farrelly

3 – Gary Farrelly, 2 – Geffrey Keighley, 1 – Barry Heath

The second grade game saw Ash Robinson winning his 100th cap for the club, congrats Ash!

Coming off a win from Round Two against St Ives, Uni trained really well during the week and sorted out many ailing issues that needed addressing. As a result Uni had great results in set pieces, taking over three tight head scrums through the front row of Chops, Tom Cain and Jamie Sandilands, winning much opposition line out ball too with Meggo, Ash and Flemo all jumping. All this was sadly to little avail with the score line not reflecting Uni’s dominance in this area of the game - missed tackles were capitalised

upon by the Waverley side.

The first 15 minutes started out very well for Uni with a number of attacking raids down both sides of the field. Attacking 20 metres out, fly half Barry Heath’s great option to go the blind side nearly ended in a five pointer, however a George Gregan style tackle on winger Sutto dislodged the ball over the line and we found ourselves without points after a promising start to the game.

A number of break outs by the opposition which for some reason kept gaining momentum saw them carry the ball 50 metres down field. With a number of offloads ending in a try to the opposition, we found ourselves behind on the score board.

The middle of the game produced some strong performances from the forwards, Geff “Choppers” Keighley with a few tight heads and strong play around the fringes was impressive. Ash Robinson took the ball up strongly as did Meggo, Flemo and breakaway Dave Overton. The backs too were also impressive with strong games from Gary Farrelly, Shark, Matty Lo and reserve halfback Jason Chambers.

Uni’s tackling around the fringes of the rucks and mauls left a lot to be desired as did the defense wider, with Waverley scoring three tries down the sides and one up the middle with back up passes style play.

Uni managed to put one try on them in the first half through wing Dave Jennings and one late in the 2nd half from Gary Farrelly, which showed the guys did not want to lie down but all in all a better effort defensively would have seen a much different result on the score board.

3rd Grade - Waverley 7 v UNSW 38

Tries: Guthrie, J Chambers, S Wubben, L Gleeson, P Lewis, N Baird Cons: T Kell 4

3 – Chris Faleta, 2 – Jason Chambers, 1 – Keith Jeffs

As per the previous two games 3rd grade’s pre-match preparation was terrible to say the least, George Davis pulled out early Saturday morning and with such little notice we had to again start with a 4th grade player that was already on the pitch. However, in this case it was Phil the Sepo and what a find he turned out to be. The warm up was average with Arnie again strolling in with minutes to spare before kick off, I think he beat last week’s time by 2 minutes.

With Kenny Kenny Lau’s well planned wedding, backs numbers were low throughout the club so 3rd grade had to unleash their secret weapon, coach

Murphy and his hidden talent of deceptive slowness, and apparent lack of any discerning talent, which threw the opposition right form the start. With George’s late pull out the only natural option was to make the coach the captain (as the best way to catch a breather during the game is having a chat to the ref, you can use that one DC! - prolong the rest even further by talking with a slurred paddy accent!).

So 3rd grade again took the field unprepared and only half warmed up. Tristan Kell took over at fly-half and got the game under way, Waverley punted the ball straight back down field for the coach’s first meaningful input to the game, he miss judged the flight of the kick but managed to trap it with his foot (eyes closed) and then fired a bullet 10 metre pass to Nathan who was standing 15 metres away, Nathan cleaned up the loose play and took off down filed beating numerous Waverley would be tacklers, with cover coming across he gave a clever pass to send Liam Gleeson in for the first try of the day. Tristan added the extras from an acute angle and Uni were off to a flyer.

The good start was short lived and from the restart Waverley set up some good phases and scored in the corner after creating an overlap on the far side of the pitch. They also slotted the extras from a tough angle to make it all square

With Vella turning to coach every 5mins and pointing out that Waverley were fouling at the break down coach didn’t have time to absorb how bad he was playing. (Biscuit was overheard telling the coach that he had hands like a digital clock, but wasn’t as woeful as the previous Irish coach who fancied himself as a player).

This stunned Uni into action and we were next to score, the try was on the back of some great play through mid field with good runs from John Guthrie, Chris Feleta and Keith Jeffs which crated some space outside and Pat Lewis threw a clever dummy to take the second try for himself (greedy bastard but in hindsight a great option considering he dropped every other ball he touched after that, which was compounded by Shorie squealing “see you in 4th grade next week Lewis”).

Uni enjoyed the bulk of possession and the next try was as a result of some more great punches up the middle and creating more space out wide for Nathan to sprint away from two Waverley defenders to take a well deserved try of his own on the stroke of half time (and get his photo on the web as photo of the week, that’s no mean feat with 100 photos of 1st grade show stealer Max to compete with) this put Uni into the break with a good lead and one try off the bonus point.

Geoff was sideline coach for the day and tried to sub coach Murphy at half time, some spectators say they witnessed a dummy spit but sightings were unconfirmed and coach Murphy started the 2nd half.

Uni started the second half like they ended the first with some great attacking moves which lead to a try in the corner for John Guthrie who squeezed through a tight gap on the touch line to score the bonus point try.

Waverley tried to show they had some fight left and from the kick off they attacked and made some good yards with ball in hand, from 30 metres out Uni were penalised 3 times in a short space to have us camped on our line, the ref dished out a warning and the next offence was going to be a yellow. Uni dug deep with great discipline and even better defence and held Waverley out, that broke the opposition’s morale and it was the end of any significant comeback from the opposition

Waverley continued to fall off tackles and Uni produced some more good spells of rugby, with the lineout dominating, Uni started to gamble a bit more and ran the ball from their own 22 making a lot of easy yards in the centres and out wide. The next two tries were a continuation of easy ball taken from the line out, some great build up in the middle of the park and two well worked moves to give tries to Simon Wubben and Jason Chambers. Jason who had ample opportunity to hand off to fellow team members in better positions decided to tease the opposition by showing them the ball while running towards the try line and scoring in the corner (good old Navy boys, they love other men chasing them for their balls and going down in the corner).

The pack were fantastic at set piece time and also dominated in the loose, Jason Chambers made some telling runs from half back and Tristan controlled the game from 10 with some excellent conversions, all in all a great performance from 1 to 14 (15 was useless).

That leaves third’s undefeated with a bonus point in each match to stay top of the table.

Final congratulations to Chris Haylock again for not throwing a pass above his first receiver’s head and over the dead ball line for another week, only due to being called up to 2nd grade, before crying out with a sore meniscus - we just hope he doesn’t let himself go like Pav.

4th Grade - Waverley 33 v UNSW 14

Tries: P Abraham, J Brook Cons: B Osborn 2

3 – Phil Abraham, 2 – Tom Watson, 1 – Joe Brook

It was a hard day at the office compared to last week’s effort against St Ives, with Uni starting well, by pressuring Waverly's line, maintaining possession and dominating in the forwards, but all this came to no avail as Uni had their first try wrongfully disallowed. Waverly escaped from their 22 and from back to back penalties they were able to put their first points on the board. To their credit Uni fought back with a couple midfield line breaks only to be denied by Waverly's defence, but it finally cracked with backs and forwards combining to maintain possession and field position

to send Phil Abraham over from a rolling maul.

Trailing 7 - 19 Uni came from the break fired up and from against the throw on a lineout deep in Waverly's 22 Matt Ling crossed the try line only to be denied again. Not to be disheartened, Uni scored the first points of the second half with an opportunistic try from Joe Brooks who intercepted a pass on the halfway line to go in under the posts, taking the score to Uni trailing 14 - 19. With the game now in the balance Waverly showed some old form from 2009 by scoring under the posts taking the game just out of reach of Uni 14 - 26. Sensing defeat Uni were unable hold Waverly out on the fulltime whistle to finish the game 33 -14.

It was great effort from all, with standout performance from Phil Abraham, Tom Watson and Joe brooks. Head's up boys, the score wasn't a true reflection of the game.

Halligan - Waverley 5 v UNSW 19

Colts - Waverley 39 v UNSW 8

Tries: J Thomas Pens: M Lo

3 – Jared Thomas, 2 – Lewis Sillito, 1 – Hugo reynolds

What a difference a week makes!.....is what I wish I could say. Unfortunately for the Colts, our Saturday morning fixture followed the same path as it had done in previous weeks. Again we started the game well, controlling the ball in their 22 for an extended period of time. Furthermore we were rewarded with first points through Matty Lo’s boot taking us up 3-0. But as in previous weeks, the momentum quickly shifted to the opposition. They scored 3 unanswered tries to lead at the break 17-3.

Having received a quality half time gee up from Mr. Afrika and Shorey, the colts were a much more determined side in the second half… for the first five minutes. The colts forward pack strung together consecutive phases in the lead up to a barnstorming run from Jared Thomas finishing in a well earned try. But similar to the first half, we dropped off the pace again with the “old boys” from Waverley strolling in some soft tries.

The final score finished: “a lot” to them and “not many” to us. This was a fair reflection of the game as Waverley were much more aggressive all over the park. The Colts will have to harden up this week if they want to scrape a win against rivals Oatley. Of course there will be the added motivation this week of playing in front of 4,000 screaming girls brought down to “D Philly” by local playboys Joff Dunstan and Robert Meggison.

Good luck to all grades this weekend!

Uni now sit comfortably above the wooden spoon position held by Hornsby, but in need of some wins across the grades to chase the leading pack.
