Hi All Sharks,

I trust all Players, Mums and Dads enjoyed their break over the holidays. I know the committee welcomed the chance to charge their batteries and put their feet up for a few days. Well, hasn’t time flown we are into our last month of home and away games before the finals commence on the 19th August. So much to do, so little time!

From our Committee’s point of view, we know the season is fast coming to an end. During the next few weeks, we have our social night, Colts / Life Members Dinner, Team Managers wrap up, Coaches meeting, YJFL Directors/President’s meeting and committee meeting then finals – Phew!!

During the last month it has been great to see the PONRPJFC represented by Players in the YJFL selected teams taking on other leagues. Well done to our Rep Players who participated in and won their finals.

Sunday was the perfect winter footy day. The air had a slight chill but the grounds were dry and a lovely amount of sun was shining. Yes, it was a weak winter sun, however the input by our Sharks was strong. Players turned up with renewed vigour not to mention the well soaked bright white shorts. Thanks mums, well done. Whilst the scores can be unfair on teams during the year, it’s great to see the ticker shown from the players. Use the rest of the year as a learning curve if the results aren’t going your way and let’s show a united front in 2019.

Thank you all parents for the support roles you’re involved in, particularly Team Managers – you are magnificent. As a big thank you, The Grand in Warrandyte is offering all of our Team Managers a voucher at the end of the year for your sacrifice of time and effort inputted.

After a slow start back to training after the holiday break I was a little hesitant to see what the boys had in store for the game on sunday. We started with 2 players short so decided to fill the spots with some opposition players that we were grateful for. 1st qtr, the boys were sluggish and tried hard to find some rhythm while giving up a few goals in the mean time. A small pep talk at the first break on team play, quick ball movement and long kicks to key position then saw them come out of the blocks firing for the 2nd qtr.

Kicking 3 quick goals in the same amount of minutes certainly had the lads up and about as they carried on with great pressure throughout the rest of the half. A well earned rest and orange at the main break and the team were ready for battle once again. And battle they did, tackling like a pack of hungry hyaena on their prey, the boys were ferocious and relentless and never have an inch for the next 2 qtrs until the final bell rang.

Great comradery and mateship was shown all day along with respect for each other and the opposition team. A true pleasure to watch the fellas in action. Looking forward to building for the next few weeks and seeing what the rest of the season has in store for us.

Regards Coach Chris

We turned up to East Doncaster Reserve to play Beverly Hills in perfect sunshine, with a slight breeze blowing down the ground (which we used to great effect in the final term).

The boys were a little slow out of the blocks with a tough first quarter. Beverley Hills played very well and were able to win the ball in the middle of the ground to help their forwards set up and kick a few goals. Our backline tried hard and stayed on their players in what was a tough quarter of footy.

Our second quarter was better, the boys chased harder but were struggling to keep possession as Beverly Hills had some good onballers. Still, the Sharks competed well and were able to start to win some of the contests around the ground. During the first half our bench resembled the emergency ward of the Maroondah Hospital with injuries to Lucas, Ethan and Harry, but thankfully all 3 boys were able to return to the field and played on.

The Team came to life in the second half, the Sharks began to win the ball around the ground and with some good pressure and some nice Team work, the boys kicked 2 goals (Both by Harry) in a minute.

It was a similar story in the final term with Team Captain Sam Benstead proving to be unstoppable in the forward line, kicking a few goals and helping his Teammates out.

Some special mentions this week:

Ethan Genever – Played a good game, hurt his hand right on quarter time and came back on and played well. Ethan laid a few great tackles and had a few good long kicks that found team mates.

Marcus Di Battista – Tried hard all day. Marcus won a few ruck tap outs with some great taps to advantage, was very good around the packs.

Hugh Marsh – Played well, ran hard to provide options in the forward line and competed well around the ground. Took a few nice grabs too.

Harry McInerney – Had a great second half with some good tackling and forward play.

Alex ‘Dusty’ Giosserano – Alex played well. Alex played on from the kick out from full back with a booming right foot pass, good thinking Alex.

Archie Hattwich – Played a great game. Archie nearly had his head taken clean off in a high tackle, but bravely got up to take his kick. Was using his pace to advantage in the forward line.

James Cahill – played well. James took a few nice marks and chased hard. He manned up well on his player whilst in defence.

Finn Arbuthnot – Had a good game, played well in the midfield, creating options. Finn chased his opponents hard all day laying some good tackles and putting pressure on the opposition

Lucas Zylan – Lucas is a great competitor, never gives up. He tackles well and kicks long to his team mates. He’s turning into a general in our defence. Congratulations on Lucas winning the McDonalds award for the Team this week.

Luke O’Neil-Parker – Played a great game. Luke took some nice marks around the ground and at one point won a two on one contest to create a scoring opportunity for us, great to watch.

Sam Benstead – Our Captain for the week. Sam had a great second half, his handballing to his team mates was a feature in the third quarter and his final term in the forward line was great, Sam gave us a great target up forward.

After a well earnt break (for the parents) and an additional week’s break training due to the 3 on 3 tournament held at the Steelers, that all but 4 of our players attended we headed down Springfield Road to take on Whitehorse Colts. Duel Captains this week with Will Inglese and James Fortington sharing the duties.

Down 2 men this week, Ben sunning himself in the Pacific and Ryan immersing himself in the cultures of the South East. Anyway, our remaining troops dug in and got dirty against an opposition eager to show they have improved since our meeting earlier in the season.

The first quarter was a battle of the midfields with neither side dominating over the other. After getting over his cold Henry was up about early getting into the action, playing in front as directed and presenting up the middle on the lead when he had the opportunity. The ball went up and down the ground until the boys started to wear the opposition down. They started to run and share the ball into the strong breeze. We had a couple shots at goal, but the wind blew the ball off line and through for a behind. Whitehorse using the wind got the ball out into space down the far side and found a couple players free. Moving the ball into the forward line and with our players not paying attention a Colts player got to the front took a mark played on and goaled to register the first for the day. The Park Orchard boys with the assistance of a Colts fill in who played a great quarter for us kept at it and eventually Ollie driving the ball long forward, Will and James waxing well found Darcy loose in the square and the Sharks are away. The rest of the quarter was much the same with the Sharks slick handball and attack on the footy ment they finished the quarter well and with momentum.

Patty started the 2nd term attacking the ball, determined as usual his desire to win the ball ensure the boys had first use going forward. We started to use the ball better, looking for teammates on the outside players such as Ben Hales could use his pace to break from the pack hitting Thomas on the lead, with both targets Henry and Thomas presenting it meant Xavier and Angus could rove the packs and attacking front and centre and running into goal The boys down back worked well together keeping up the pressure linking up and clearing the ball with a couple long kicks from our power kickers Darcy & Ollie clearing the midfield

after receiving releasing handballs from Elliot and Will. Liam and Julian working in the midfield all quarter battling hard, Liam going from strength to strength gaining confidence each week.

Half time you could see the boys had been working hard all over the ground, coming in for a well earnt orange. We reinforced the importance of playing in front especially when kicking into the wind, Kai moved into the midfield and provided some grunt and power required to move the ball forward. Our defenders James, Angus, James, Thomas and Xavier had more work to do with the wind kicking up, they all did a fantastic job, James and Angus with inside pressure allowing Xavier to break to the open side and hit targets with Henry and Kai holding front position, Will under pressure using his left foot, Darcy driving the ball long and low under he breeze and James being busy in and around the pack.

Julian played a great third, getting to and holding front position taking a couple strong marks, always giving his best. Liam’s pace was again on show breaking free who found Elliot clear to score. Elliot looks to be a natural forward goal sneak in the Cyril mould, not huge numbers but super effective and dangerous.

With a solid third behind us the boys put the foot down, Patty finished a great game dominating the midfield, Julian and Xavier breaking clear and hitting targets. Xavier lacing his brother with a bullet pass that he couldn’t complete but made up with a crowd pleaser dribble from the pocket. Ollie and Thomas dominating the ruck giving the speedsters first use.

Will, Angus and James being fortunate to be playing up forward as the boys in the midfield took control. Elliot, Henry, Ben, Kia and Liam not as busy in the last but when the ball came down their efficiency and teamwork to move the ball forward was pleasing to watch.

Super game and was great to see the boys challenged but a determined Whitehorse.

Camberwell 3.3.21 Def by Park Orchards 8.9.57

It’s great to have the footy back!!!!

A beautiful Sunday morning would see the boys travel to Camberwell where we had a memorable draw earlier in the season.

With little Harry and his mate Tom B winning the toss we decided to kick against the wind and see if we could come home with it in the last quarter.

The boys were pumped up for the game which would would see the midfield with Alby, Zane, Felix and Nate get early control. The backline also stepped up with Zac, Logan, Gabe, Presty, Riley and Captain courageous TomB holding the opposition to only 1 goal with the wind. Both Dan and Isaac also had great quarters on their respective wings and helped the backline every chance they had.

Major highlights for the quarter included Beau’s mark and his kick for goal which was just touched. Gabe kept attacking the ball which on one occasion led to Isaac getting it and passing it to big Ruckman Nate who took a great grab and kicked truly.

The second quarter started similar to the first with Will T, Will F, Isaac and Logan taking control in the middle. Felix amd Josh B played well and helped the backline hold Camberwell scoreless. Another great quarter by the backline with Zac, Dan, Josh P, Alby, Ned and Zane combining well. The forward line played well also headed by Lachy at centre half forward and Beau, Sam, Harvey, Kai and Oscar.

Major highlights included great goals to Logan and Josh P and several of the boys including Zac, Dan, Josh B, Presty and Logan all using their opposite foot.

With the major break behind us we knew that if we could have a big third quarter against the wind we could almost put the game out of reach.

Right from the outset the boys fought hard with Riley continuing to play well in the middle and little Harry getting amongst it in the midfield and trying hard. Zac and Josh P held the backline together and Logan took command in the midfield

Major highlights included Albys attack at the ball and his banana shot for goal that went close with Harvey roving it and kicking a goal. Ruckman Nate was rested at Full Back and did some great kick outs which all went to the right side of the ground given the wind on the day. Gabe kept at it and was rewarded for his efforts with a run in and goal on the run. Another great quarter by all and with the wind to come the boys had done everything we asked of them.

The final quarter would see us take advantage of the wind with the boys playing on the right side of the ground for the whole quarter.

Sharks 5.6. 36 Def Kew Comets 3.7. 25

After a few weeks off due to the school holidays, the Sharks U10 Black team returned to training last Friday night in good numbers. Given the weeks off, skills were pretty sharp and the boys were up for a big game against a strong Kew Comets team on Sunday.

Thankfully, a sunny morning welcomed the side at Victoria Park and with plenty of parents and spectators in attendance it was a good test for the U10 Black team to continue their winning form.

First Quarter

If anyone was in any doubt as to the strength of the Kew Comets side, it was quickly put to bed in the first quarter as the Sharks were put on the back foot by an opposition full of running and tackling pressure. Both teams fought for midfield ascendancy, resulting in just three scoring shots for the quarter. Sharks 0.0. 1 Kew Comets 1.1. 7

Second Quarter

Coach Daniel Bullen brought the boys into the quarter time huddle and implored that they get to more contests to support their teammates. But as the wind sprang up, the Sharks boys found themselves kicking into the wind. If not for Kew’s inaccuracy, the margin could have blown out. But a steadying goal settled the Sharks nerves and levelled up the scoreboard before Kew opened up a handy lead late. Sharks 1.1. 7 Kew Comets 2.5. 17

Third Quarter

Back in the rooms at half time, the boys remained calm and confident as the Coach made some positional moves. After their customary half time warm up, the Sharks hit the ground running in the third quarter and kicking with a strengthening breeze maintained the ball in our forward line. Two goals, three points was a good return – and by keeping Kew to just two points it was game on! Sharks 3.4. 22 Kew Comets 3.5. 23

Final Quarter

Having got themselves back into it in the Premiership Quarter, the Sharks boys were relentless in the last stanza despite kicking against the wind. The backline held up against Kew’s forward entries, while our midfield and forwards took the most of their opportunities forward of centre. A clean chain of possession resulted in a goal that saw the Sharks hit the lead, which was followed up by a centre clearance and opportunistic snap to extend the lead. In the final three frenetic minutes, Kew pushed hard with the wind but the Sharks stood tall to deny the Comets. What a game! Final scores Sharks 5.6. 36 Def Kew Comets 3.7. 25

After two weeks break, which everyone enjoyed, we were back to an early start with an 8:30am game. At least the sun was out! We began the day by celebrating two 50 gamers, Lucas N and James, and both boys enjoyed kicking goals during the game.

The first quarter saw us get off to an early lead with two quick goals. Lucas N kicked the first of his four goals for the day and James, getting the benefit of a dubious umpiring decision, kicked confidently for our second of the quarter. Owen was dominant during the quarter, getting to a lot of contests and winning the ball strongly. We went in at the break a few points up.

The second and third quarter were scrappy affairs, with our boys seemingly still on holidays and a bit fumbly. There were, however, some highlights:• Jaydenwasabletoputgoodforwardlinepressureonforusandwasrewardedwith two goals for the game. • Ourtacklingpressure, whilenotashighasourusualstandards, wasstillgoodand we were able to win many free kicks from it. • JacobBwaspreparedtodothelittlethingsandimpressedwithsomeofhisblocks and shepherding. • Dylan, playingindefence, wonseveralkeycontestsandwasabletoforceaballup when the opposition was streaming towards goal.

At three quarter time we were up by a few goals but we did not feel we were playing good football. We asked for a big last quarter and we got it. Jack, who played another consistent game on the wing, kicked a great goal on the run. He knows where to run and just wins a lot of the footy. Campbell, who is so confident and assured in defence, was swung forward and immediately kicked a goal (his first for the year!). Henry continued his four- quarter performance and took a strong mark and kicked his second for the game. Lucas N finished off how he started the game, kicking another goal to end with four good goals. All up, a scrappy performance but we will take the win against a weaker opposition.

Park Orchards (H) 0. 3. 3 Def by Banyule 13. 7. 85

More milestone games for our boys, with Byron Bradshaw & Jacob Simos lining up to play their 50th game for the Sharks. Bryon has been a rock for us, the ‘Plugger’ of our team, since starting in U/8’s. A great kid who loves kicking a goal, hopefully he can get one today.

Jacob joined us at the start of the year having played 40 games with Canterbury. Jacob has done a fantastic job fitting in with all the boys and really enjoys his footy.

Unfortunately, we had 3 boys pull out sick before the game, so we were down to 18, this meant we the team would need to put in and help each other out.

Archie started in the ruck with Ozzie, Broc and Corey making up our on-ball bridage. The first contest was a good one as we got the clearance and moved forward trying to get an early score. Bosco was coming off the wing like a little fox terrier to prove that size doesn’t matter. Bosco continued to be at the bottom of the pack at every chance and several times showed great pass and determination to get to the ball first.

Our back line of Sean, Harry, Tom Mac, Fletch, Jacob & Elliot were al under siege as Banyule managed to kick 5 goals in the first quarter and another 2 in the second. I think the boys were still on school holidays and struggling to fire a shot.

The forward line didn’t get to see much of the ball in the first half. Byron was working hard in the ruck. Sean was collecting plenty of kicks and continues to improve his skills every week. Harry was back to his tackling best, while Elliot was working hard trying to get the ball out of the bottom of the pack.

In the second half we slowly started to lift. BT, back from his walkabout tour, was getting angry in the middle and winning the ruck. Poor Ozzie needed to be moved out of the middle to give him a rest as he continued gather kick after kick. Broc was a bit down from some very strong form tried to lift his team. A couple of time Corey found space and looked electric, but we just couldn’t get the ball forward.

At ¾ time all the boys were asked to dig deep and give their maximum effort for the last quarter. Hamish came out all guns blazing by attacking the ball, running to space and clearing the danger zone. Hamish has a very good football brain, he sees the game well and will develop into a very solid footballer. Jacob in his 50th game was running between forward line and backline trying his hardest and getting a few kicks along the way.

Ozzie and Corey both had opportunities from a long way out, but the ball just wouldn’t bounce our way. On several occasions Byron came bursting out of the pack to find himself in clear space and set sail for goal only to see the ball drift into the points. Byron was having quite a good game and I reckon all he wanted was to kick a goal in his 50th… Keep at it Byron your football is coming a long way.

James was also having a fantastic finish to the game gathering many possessions but struggled to find space as he continued to be tackled by 2 or 3 players every time. Will found himself at the back of the pack and on the end of a great passage of play but just couldn’t hold on to a great mark. Ollie continued to scout the packs trying hard to be an influence and Cruz (who was hobbling around on one leg) continued lead and get to the right spots but his pace eluded him today. Keep working Cruz you are doing very well for a kid who is playing his first year of football.

So today just wasn’t meant to be. All the boys finished the game in great spirit and showed fantastic endeavour in the last quarter. I can see improvement in all these boys we are just needing to keep working together as a team and for each other.

Up against the 2nd top team (Kew Rovers) at Domeney today. A real test to see how we go againts teams in the top 4. We had 4 of our boys away today but our mates in the Under 11’s were more then happy to help us out (Big thanks to Mason Harvie, Henry Milton, Lukas Virhonen- Blunt and Archie Leonard).

We were hoping to kick with the wind in the 1st quarter but the coin landed the wrong way up (Bad luck skippers). It was a close fought tussle early in the quarter with neither team giving up. After some great work in the midfield and some great running and shepharding from Allen Guo, Cooper Smith kicked our 1st goal, snapping a very clever goal on the run.

We spoke at 1/4 time about the willingness to work hard for each other, play in front and things would happen; and that they did. The boys played a great quarter of footy with Andrew Holt-Oakes dominating the ruck, Josh Galstians flying through the middle with Daniel Albers who was doing some great work. Henry, Mason and Archie were in everything and Lukas was providing a great target for us at Full Forward. Tom Worthington, Jacob Tymms and Will Tait were again ever reliable letting nothing past when in the backline and all 3 boys did some great things when moved up the ground. Jack Fortington was having a great game and reading the ball off the pack and also taking some great marks. It was great to have Max Dominko back who landed at Tullamarine at 8:30am and was stripped and ready to go at 1/4 time.

Oli Nitz was brilliant with his attack on the ball laying some huge tackles and taking some great marks and Jake Galstians was as tough and hard at it as usual. Josh Smillie dominated in the 2nd quarter and kicked 2 big goals to put us up at 1/2 time.

The 3rd quarter was a dogfight with the ball locked deep in Kews forward 50 for much of the quarter but although we didn’t score we didn’t let them either.

In the last quarter Nathan Draeger took some good marks and Harry Smit kicked a sealer quickly followed by Cooper with his 2nd. Joel Stephens played another great game using his run and linking up with some good handball when playing on the wing. In the end we ran out winners by 27 points. The result was great but it was the way all of the boys went about it. Great game and again a big thanks to Rob Sette’s Under 11 Jets for helping us out

G’day to all,

Stintons at 11.30am as the fixture continues to confound. No problems though as our footballers had mostly all trained Thursday night.

What a great game we had Sunday at the tip….I was worried about the mighty Heidelberg side from the get go but all was about how our boys turned up really!

Big Demps was back from injury as captain and did the right thing….we kicked with the breeze. We had all of the guns in the right spots but did not combine really well from the beginning, the break looked as though it was not beneficial!

Foxy started really well getting the footy at will and kicked a goal, JT swapped forward off the ball with Coop too and slotted a major. The breeze was probably worth 3 or 4 goals at least, and they kicked one into it also….we had a slender 8 point lead at the first change.

We had opportunities in the second quarter and play some good footy into the wind, they kicked 2.2 for the quarter and had a 3 point lead at the main break.

A lot of our boys were a bit off their game, the wide open spaces of Stintons did not seem to be agreeable with our smaller bodies, strange how it plays out some days.

Both teams scored 1.1 in during the premiership quarter and down hill and breeze during the last Heidelberg were too good for us winning convincingly by 16 points.

Our fellas tried really hard and stood up to the job as magnificent footballers.

Best players: Killa, Davy B, Sonders, JT, Oaksy and the Fox.

Park Orchards 3.3.21 Def by North Brunswick 6.4.40

We came up against the top side this week at North Brunswick in difficult, blustery conditions & after a very competitive performance the week prior again the 2nd side were looking forward to the challenge. Also exciting for us was the return of our big ruckman Blake for his first game of the year after a broken finger in the pre-season.

The bad guys won the toss & kicked with a 6 goal wind. But we defended resolutely. Ben S was particularly cool under pressure mopping up across the full back line & Matt W was damaging with his run & ball use. Dan S has improved all aspects of his game this year & continued to impress. Yared didn’t miss a beat & kicked long from the midfield. We spotted up team mates with great passing into the wind & combined well. Rhys was strong in the contest down back. Boston was presenting well. Blake was also a good target the forward line. At 1/4 time, Nth Brunswick had only managed 1 goal to our 1 behind.

With the wind we were looking for a big quarter. Harry started to show his dominance & Charlie in the ruck continued to hunt the ball in the air & on the ground. Some slick ball use into our forward line resulted in Yared scoring our first goal. Nth Brunswick defended stoutly & Mitch, James & Jacob all were thwarted on the goal line. Oscar & Dan W are combining really well in defence & continued to show that. Lucas is developing a real contested game & on his wing was very busy. Remi is our running machine & his getting the hang of the game more & more each week. At halftime we trailed by just a point.

3rd quarter, into the wind again but we dominated the first 10 minutes. Solomon again outstanding with his vision & handball skills. Blake moved to the ruck & provided silver service to the on-ballers. Mitch was really positive around the forward line, leading hard & running to space. But it was Charlie who provided the spark. His first goal of the year from long range after Yared cleared the ball from the center of the ground was quickly followed up after a pass from Jacob into the goal square. All of a sudden we were up into the wind! Another couple of chances didn’t go our way but unfortunately Nth Brunswick were able to link up & for the last 5 minutes took away our ascendancy…& our lead…& kicked 3 goals. That was the 3/4 time difference in the game but we had the wind.

We flicked around a few players for the last quarter. Matt went to the wing & showed his run & carry skills. Rhys in the middle had a great quarter topping off a great game. Brodie, Mitch & James all fought super hard in the forward line but we couldn’t get the goals, with balls smothered & knocked out of bounds. Unfortanetly we could bridge the gap & lost by 19 points. But again right in the game - competitive throughout.

Individually, I’m really impressed with Charlies competitiveness no matter where he plays. Yared is a natural & runs with the ball so well. Solomon & Rhys around the ball always show great skill & awareness. Our wingmen in Lucas & Remi push hard up & down the ground. Pleasing for Blake to get through the game unscathed. Matt & Ben are great defenders, never panicking. And it was Boston’s best game presenting really strongly. Captain: Rhys

Well what a great way to come back from the break. Once again we ran out a little under maned, but a big thanks goes to Tommy and Cooper for filling in, both boys had great games, we took on Camberwell who had some tall timber and a very strong wind advantage in the first quarter but from the outset Big Dig Bridger and the centre line up of Chrisso, Ryan and Josh M set the tone, not only for the quarter but the entire game, our last quarter before the 2 week break against Ashburton was fantastic and the whole team kept that for going into this game.

We knew we had a battle against the strong wind but all the boys held strong and kept Camberwell to just one goal and we managed to kick one as well. Alex Mac, Kane Dicko, Ben J, Noah, Jesh and James M did a fantastic job down back under pressure and out confidence was up at quarter time, the second quarter didn’t disappoint, we piled on 5 goals to Camberwells no score, our forwards were great, Brodie R, Rhonan, Damo, Zach M, Coops and Tommy were on fire putting pressure on Camberwell that they couldn’t handle. Woody’s and Jake’s running through the middle was awesome, the smothers the tackles were thick and fast. At half time we focused on the fact that Camberwell were going to come out firing with the wind and a huge effort was required to hold their scoring opportunities back, Camberwell only managed 2 goals which was a huge effort once again from the whole team once again.

The last quarter was great, not one player held back making sure this game didn’t slip and we had another 5 goal quarter, Noah made sure Camberwells attacks were short lived, Big Dog, Josh M, Ryan D and Alex Mac enjoyed the hard contests, Woody and Chrisso didn’t stop running and even Tommy snagged a goal for us. With Zac S being out of the game early once again we had no rotations available which just made the win even better. Well deserved and a great reward for the effort this year to take the field under manned with hopefully more rewards coming in the last 4 games. Well done boys!

Gillon Oval (Round 11)

In what seemed like an eternity since we played, we had to pack up and head to Brunswick West to take on fourth place Brunswick with a depleted side due to injury and travel plans. We were lucky enough however to have Will Sonderhof and Joel Foxwell available from the Under 13’s and we were able to field a full contingent on game day.

The wind was the first thing we noticed, but the players moved the ball wisely to make sure that it was not in paly, and ensure that Brunswick only had limited scoring opportunities from the worst place on the ground.

I thought the first quarter went our way and that our team ethos of, “next men up” was brilliantly fulfilled, when we shuffled guys around, and everyone understood their responsibilities throughout the game.

Our attack at the footy was the best that I have seen all year and the endeavour to “take space” was exceptional.

Ball movement was done to the correct side of the ground with switches that ensured we had the best scoring opportunities from the bets positions almost all the time.

It was hard to single out players that did not do their job well on the weekend, with Owen having an exceptional first half, Tommy and Rossi plying a sensational game all day,

Jordy and Prisoner 29864, exiting the ball sublimely through the half back corridor, Mullet positioning well for the switch and was part of the clearance machine all day, OGA chasing hard to get results across the half back, or Brock doing an amazing job at CHB. Finn, Tobey, and Brayden did an exceptional job as well against a very mobile forward attack, and it was interesting that the inside 50’s that were repelled, were probably the highest of the year. (Back six, get the chics lads!!!!!!!)

Although our numbers faultered, and we record an “L” in the ledger, I can say that the game plan and the execution of it are very strongly intact, and we will come home strong towards the finals.

The Sharks came up against Heidelberg, and as we expected this was going to be a physical encounter.

The first quarter was some of the best football we have played this year. We dominated out of centre with Isaac Taylor giving our midfielders in Benny Wallis, TJ, Gus Brown and Liam Greaney first use of the football. Nick the King Antonino had a field day in our forward line as he kicked 3 first quarter goals. Our defence lead by Purcell, Harvie, Bates and Hayes were repelling any attacks from Heidelberg. It was great to see all our players contributing in the first quarter.

The second quarter was little disappointing as we stopped doing the hard things like being first to the football and doing the team things. The Super coach was not happy at half time and gave the boys an almighty spray which they deserved. Going in at half time only 9 points in front was a bit of a concern as Heidelberg finished the second quarter full of run.

Our third quarter was like the first. The Sharks came out of the blocks from the Supercoach’s spray and went bang bang bang and broke the spirit of Heidelberg. Again, King Nick, Tyson Harrap and Buckets Fowkes were involved in goals. We played accountable football with even contributions from each player. This is the type of football we should play for the rest of the year.

In the last quarter, we again came out of the blocks quickly with Nick kicking a couple of goals to finish the day with a lazy 6 Goals. Great Game Nick.

Overall this was good win boys. I am confident that we can finish the year out strongly as long as we focus our attention on the football and don’t lose concentration.

As the Super coach keeps saying, it’s important that you all show up to training this week

Glen Iris 17. 8. 110 Def Park Orchards 1. 5.11

In Round 1 we played Glen Iris at their home ground on a bleak, wet and windy day and we won by 1 point.

Today we played a team that wore the Glen Iris colours but it was a completely different team. Because it is still the school holiday period, Glen Iris was able to play all its TAC Oakleigh Chargers players who normally cannot play for the Club because the TAC staff or the private school football has first dibs at them.

In Round 10 Glen Iris had played Parkside and beat them 197 points to 1 point so our work was going to be in front of us.

We have been cruelled by injury this year and the latest to face the rest of the season on the sidelines is Max Hartnett. Max is a fantastic footballer and an even better young bloke and his drive, smarts and determination will be sorely missed. We all wish you a speedy recovery from the surgery you face.

Further to Max missing we have Buckets Cullen and Billy Podmore out for the season injured. Fraser Siesmaa and Liam Greaney have been seconded to the Colts Red team for the year. This week we lost Lachie Holmes, Charlie O’Connor and Ethan Stone to being away. And by 1.30pm on match day we had lost Sam Button, Mason Appleby and Jack Elliott to illness or injury. We fronted to the match with 17 available players.

Is the picture bleak enough?

Suffice it to say, we played that way. Glen Iris mauled us in the first quarter to post 7 goals 3 (45) to our zero (0). We were stung into action in the second quarter and we stopped haemorrhaging goals but the scores were 8 goals 4 behinds (52) to 2 behinds (2) at half time.

Glen Iris went on a rampage in the third adding another 7 goals in the quarter to be 15 goals 7 behinds (97) to our (2) heading into the last. The siren couldn’t come quickly enough but at least Macca kicked a lovely goal from 45 out to end the contest with Glen Iris 17 goals 8 behinds (110) to Park Orchards 1 goal 5 behinds (11).

Park Orchards Sharks 0.1.1 Def by Richmond 8.10.58

The sun was out but the wind was cold as we headed to Richmond to take on a team we felt confident of chalking up another win against. We arrived full of confidence even though we were missing some important players for us, Zahra Nyariri, Mia Bosna, Shania D’Souza and Elena Pelosi were all unavailable – leaving us with our lowest numbers for the season only having three girls on the interchange bench.

Our captains for the day in Macy Vendel and Zara Dove gave the pre-game rev up in the rooms and were full of inspiration as the girls set themselves for an important game. We won the toss of the coin and both Zara and Macy started in the centre giving their all in what turned out to be a tough game. Both girls collected a few kicks, tackles and chased hard in good captain performances.

Grace Bettiol was again outstanding in the backline, as she was kept busy with the ball frequently being in her zone. Grace was well assisted by the other girls in the backline but the class of Richmond shone through as they continued to attack, pushing the ball forward with ease and scoring plenty of goals without too much pressure being applied. Willow Harvey again worked hard all day playing on the backline and pushing into the ruck. Willow plays with a real determination and is seen as a leader around the club so well done Willow on another solid performance and for winning the opposition medal.

Mia Spencer Jones kept up her tackle count with some very important, goal stopping tackles. Mia attacks the ball carrier, tackles with excellent technique and with ball in hand kicks long and direct and impacts every game she plays in. Mia was also well assisted by Scarlett McInerney who plays a similar game.

Our forwards in Bonnie SJ, Ella Saunders, Jaide Scott, Sienna Pollock, Charlotte Peterson and Ruby Caldwell unfortunately didn’t get a lot of opportunity as the ball didn’t travel forward much at all. When it did they gave a contest and looked likely to score goals but again Richmond hunted in numbers and cleared the ball without too much fuss.

Grace Dawson moved into the mid field collecting plenty of kicks and laying some good tackles, as did Indi Tovey who again showed why she is so important to our team defensively. Both Ellie Bryant and Georgia Taylor battled hard all day in defense, Ellie took down a girl twice her size without a worry in the world! Allie King, Emily Caldwell and Charlise Doolan were just as good on the tackle front, playing well defensively and collecting a number of disposals.

It was pretty clear watching from the sidelines that Richmond were a completely different team from what we played earlier in the season and had improved dramatically. They played with a real purpose, were first to ball all day, ran hard to support each other, out numbered us around the ball which all resulted in them having 18 shots on goal to our one. It was hard to watch at times as our run and chase was non-existent through certain patches in quarters. I continually

Sharks win 9 in a row !

Another great game for the Sharks with the first quarter being hotly contested but at the change we were 2 goals up with one of the Co-Captains for the day Lily Mercer kicking a nice goal and Tegan Rule kicking one from traffic at close range giving us a slight buffer! Our defense was standing up nicely and the on ballers giving us plenty of forward momentum we were playing the game on our terms!

We also had the best of the second quarter and with her 2nd goal Tegan was providing a great target at full forward and a goal to Charlotte Brimelow gave us a nice buffer at half time !

The third quarter also saw Tegan put another 2 goals on the board the best a lovely hand ball receive from Mia Servinis and Tegan snapping truly gave us a an unassailable lead at 3 quarter time ! Our Midfielders had worked extremely hard and the red faces of Zoe Miriklis, Maddie Moran, Mia Sevinis & Molly Nash showed how hard earned the lead was !

We changed things up a little in the final quarter with our second Co-Captain Jayde Peters playing ruck and when she received another lovely hand ball from Mia and kicked straight we had our 7 on the board, however Banyule weren’t going to be clean sheeted and kicked 2 straight ones and had they kicked straight throughout the day may have been a lot closer and the scoreboard doesn’t accurately depict how competitive they were!

We have a great team and it was wonderful for Tegan to get her second bag of 4 goals. The game was clearly won by our back line again with Amy Smith, Zoe Miriklis & Haylee Bastide having really good games but they were led by Charlotte Green who continues to shine in all roles and her game at Center Half Back today was fantastic! She along with all our girls are enjoying bringing others into the game with shepherds & handballs and when we play our (Sharks) footy we are unbeatable!

Best today were: Charlotte Green, Tegan Rule, Mia Sevinis, Maddie Moran & Zoe Miriklis!

Away to Brunswick next game Go Sharks !

After a couple of weeks off footy the girls turned up to the Kevin Bartlett Complex in Richmond, ready to go. There was a long list of girls unable to play due to a variety of reasons. Despite numbers being down however luckily enthusiasm was not.

The open quarter saw the Sharks utilise the benefits of a strong wind to push the ball into their forward line and hold it in there for the entire quarter. A lack of accuracy was the only downfall in the Sharks game, as they dominated the Tigers. Unfortunately the scoreboard did not tell of this story of dominance with the Sharks going into quarter time 1.5.11 to 0.0.0.

The second quarter saw our girls having to combat the Tigers when they had the advantage of the all-important wind. It was vital that the girls were able to limit Richmond’s scoring when they had this advantage. Early in the quarter this was proving to be difficult. And despite a couple of forward advances the Sharks were able to only 2 behinds while the Tigers kicked one goal two points. There was less than a straight kick in it going into half time, which really did not accurately reflect the flow of the game.

At half time the Coaches gave a clear message to the girls, work hard to maximise the lead in the third quarter and then work even harder to hold the lead in the last quarter as the Tigers would no doubt come home strongly. The Sharks completed this plan throughout the third quarter and were able to kick straighter to add two goals one to their half time score. While holding the Tigers scoreless.

Going into the last the question was, would a three goal advantage be enough to defend with the Tigers kicking to the scoring end and the wind getting even stronger. A valiant effort from the girls along with some inaccuracy from Richmond saw the girls celebrate a well-earned victory

Round 11 Sharks on the Hunt: The mighty Sharks Red team travelled away this week, to the home of the Richmond football club. With a few key players out (Mia and Jorja) and coming off a holiday break, the coach was a little unsure of how the team would perform. Maybe there were a few too many chocolates and other treats on offer during the holidays because it took some time for the girls to get into gear. The coaches gave the girls an early g-up and a reminder of how they wanted to play the game due to the windy conditions.

Q1: Layla slotted back into the team nicely with a great cameo performance, which all started from her first tap, she went on to dominate in the air throughout the day. A solid hard ball get from Chelsea and a penetrating kick to Lauren who then put on her trademark move wheeling around on her left pumping the ball to the hot spot where Alannah gathered it off the deck ‘Luke Bruest’ style to slot the first major. The Sharks dominated out of the centre, Matilda’s relentless pressure and the ability of Sophie to hit targets to clear the congestion was a class above. Vas’s GPS was off the chart, her running efforts to get into space and setup opportunities for the forwards was telling. Plenty of chaos balls into the forward fifty finally allowed Chloe to register the second goal for the Sharks, she was well supported by great pressure acts from Hanni and Jasmine. The ball was rarely seen in the opposition forward line, Jade, Kristen and Flynn setup the wall beautifully across half back. Flynn was taking strong marks and dashing off half back sending the ball back into attack, the Sharks defence

proved to be a formidable force for the entire day. The only blemish was a low scoring term given the fact that we owned it. The coach was quick to address that at half time and urged the girls to step it up a notch and bring some heat to the contest.

Quarter time: Sharks 2.3 Richmond 0.0

Q2: The girls got the message, Alannah and Natalie were sidestepping opponents like they were witches hats. Lauren and Vas continued to be effective driving the ball deep into attack. Chelsea, Tilly and Zoe we terrific in defence and it was good to see the girls carrying out the coaches instructions with great running and bouncing efforts from Lauren and Flynn. The Sharks started to lift with a great passage of play that started with a hard ball get from Layla firing out a handball to Kristen who delivered the ball to the forward line where Alannah

swooped and sent it deep into attack for Chloe to show her class and cap off a great team goal. Jade continued to rack up possessions as if trained by Tom Mitchell himself, further goals to Sophie and Chloe finished off a strong quarter, Sharks 6.5 with Richmond yet to score.

Q3: The opening few seconds saw Matilda with a clearance and great delivery to Sophie who pulled something out of the Cyril Rioli handbook, taking a mark with the flight of the ball, then a slight fumble and gather and played on to register a terrific goal on the run, lovely to watch Sophie! Matilda’s pressure and tackling finally paid off with the umpire actually remembering to blow the whistle and award a free kick. The look on Matilda’s face said “About time!”. Matilda went back and split the middle to register the Sharks second goal for the quarter. Jade was busy around the packs and showed off her quick thinking by setting up Alannah to kick another easy Sharks goal. Natalie was busy on the wing racking up some big numbers in metres gained. Jasmine and Hanni continued the tackling pressure which simply overwhelmed the opposition. We could have mistaken Zoe for Isaac Smith as she collected the ball and streamed down the wing running and bouncing her full measure as per the coaches instructions – well done Zoe! End of the quarter Sharks 11.6 Richmond 0.0

Q4: Richmond posted their first score for the game which gave them some positives to take into next week. The last term was a scrappy affair with the ball spending a lot of time between the arcs, the Sharks managed another two majors for the term and ran out the game well. The girls pressured well and showed some excellent passages of teamwork.

With a four-team division, the Under 15 girls played Brunswick again in round 11. We welcomed back Courtney Murray returning from injury sustained the last time we played Brunswick! It’s always a close game against Brunswick with both teams evenly matched in their previous encounters but Brunswick having a much bigger list. We evened up to 15 players a side, Brunswick lending us a player each quarter.

In the first quarter the Sharks had the benefit of the wind and kicked six behinds and the first of Zoe’s goals for the day. Good tacking and defensive skills such as the one pictured of Isabelle kept Brunswick pointless in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Brunswick bounced back with the wind and took the lead with two goals and two behinds keeping the Sharks pointless in the quarter.

The girls were back in the third quarter with great ruck work and tackling. Courtney took an impressive mark and kick creating a break away opportunity. Courtney, Isabelle, Sophie and Amelia continued through the quarter with great pressure and tackling, good disposal of the ball and great pressure from Tahlia and Charli. Three behinds and one impressive goal from a banana kick off Victoria Turner’s boot saw the Sharks again take the lead, and again keep Brunswick scoreless in the quarter.

As the sun started setting and shadow darkened the ground, the girls dug deep to keep their lead and improve it. Zoe and Victoria kicked their second goals for the day and a third attempt at goal was touched resulting in a point to the sharks. Brunswick managed to score one behind in the quarter resulting in a well-deserved win for the girls.

It was great to see such a positive team performance with all the girls playing their part and we can look forward to the next contest with Brunswick!

This week saw our girls play at Domeny Reserve for the first time and they were super keen to record a win against Richmond. We were denied victory last time around when the game was called off after a Richmond player was injured during a passage of play that saw them kick a goal and take the lead back from us by 2 points.

Quarter 1

Richmond won the toss and elected to kick to the end aided by a strong breeze.

Renee went to Centre Half Forward in the absence of Chloe R and was very dangerous with her mobility and excellent kicking skills. Bri was controlling the ruck contest and Issy was providing her usual run & carry from her wing. Up forward Tahlia was on top and kicked a great goal on the run after executing an exceptional ‘don’t argue’. She was unlucky not to add a second goal when her kick shaved the inside of the post.

Our Defenders were their usual dour selves and making life difficult for Richmond’s forwards despite them having the benefit of the wind. Dakota was playing another fine game but sadly was injured in a tackle just before quarter time.

It was disappointing to allow Richmond to kick a goal late in the quarter but the girls came into the first break full of confidence and excited about continuing their good work with the aid of the breeze in the second quarter. Park Orchards 01.03.09 to Richmond 01.01.07

Quarter 2

Sadly, the second quarter was in complete contrast to our first quarter. We were flat footed, second to the ball and our tackle count was well down. It was like the girls thought that having the benefit of the breeze allowed them to reduce their work rate and intensity. Richmond capitalised and kicked 03.06 into the wind whilst our only score for the quarter was a goal to Issy.

We must always look for positives and the shining light in the 2nd quarter was Alex. She was quite nervous going into the game as she suffered a neck injury in our last game before the holidays and was taken to Hospital in an Ambulance. You would never had known watching the game as she continually put her head over the ball and won numerous possessions. Well done Alex !

Dakota resumed playing late in the second quarter after Rob worked tirelessly dealing with her corked thigh. Park Orchards 02.03.15 to Richmond 04.07.38

Quarter 3:

The girls were honest with themselves during the long break and identified the areas they needed to improve – execution of tackles, run harder and for longer, defensive pressure acts etc…

Unfortunately, Richmond continued to control the game and in particular number 22 (Daisy) who kicked all three of their goals for the quarter.

Chloe R arrived just before three quarter time and took up her usual position of C.H.F which allowed Renee to go back into the midfield. Park Orchards 02.05.17 to Richmond 07.09.51

Quarter 4:

Nat put her hand up to run with Daisy and negate her impact on the game. This move had immediate success with Nat laying two great tackles, winning a loose ball and kicking long to Issy who in turn kicked a goal. Great work Nat !

Chloe R was working hard up and down the ground and her efforts were rewarded with a goal from an excellent kick across her body.

Jaya continued her really good form of the past couple of games and finished off with an excellent last quarter. Bri worked tirelessly for four quarters but of course we have come to expect nothing less from her.

Richmond did outscore us in the final quarter but we certainly took the fight up to them and made them work until the final siren. Park Orchards 04.09.33 def by Richmond 11.10.76

This week we play our old foes and ladder leader, Surrey Park, at Domeny. How great would it be to put a large dent in their confidence by beating them as they prepare for a finals campaign. We only lost by 10 points at their ground earlier in the season and I know that our best is capable of knocking them off.

Go Sharks !!

Park Orchards 1.1-7 Def by Fitzroy 13.12-90

Round 11 – Another great day for football with clear skies but with a 2 goal northerly breeze favouring the southern end of Domeney Reserve. We started the game with 19 thanks to Issy, Alana and Nat from our other youth girl team agreeing to play a second game of football for the day. The first quarter saw us kicking into the wind and we were determined to not let Fitzroy get a jump on us as in previous games. We held our ground well for most of the quarter with good rebounding from Brooke, Samira, Paris, Sophie, Ally, Ash and Kat. We did really well for the first 15 mins restricting a strong Fitzroy team to only 1 goal. We unfortunately allowed a couple of late goals and went in a quarter time down 3.4-22 to 0.0-0.

Fitzroy know they are in for a hard game when they play us , however, with the absence of Lilly, Skye and Addy through injury and illness meant it was always going to be difficult to have good ball movement and it showed as we failed to score in the second quarter despite the breeze. We did however, get some drive out of the centre and created opportunities with Samira entering the ruck to support Ruby who never gave up. Issy, Alana and Nat showed some good pace as well as the ever reliable Ibby who ran down a few Fitzroy girls. Turbo (Tiana) was winning her share of ball in the centre. Jacky had her usual tagging role but Fitzroy had too much experience and size for us to hold them. Half time saw us trail by 43 points.

The second half was much like the first and the injury curse was once again upon us. Angel injured a finger, Ally hurt her knee, Kat injured her shoulder and Sophie took a knock to the head which ended her day. Even though we finished the game with 14 players and were up against it the girls never stopped trying. It was great to see some players really step up. Kirra was notable taking several marks in the second half without any fear. Issy got plenty of ball and showed how fast she can be. Ibby spent a little time in the ruck, Paris got plenty of ball, Jacky scored our only goal and Ally dished out the bump of the season!

We can’t always win but we can play our best and have fun. Issy won the football and Alana and Nat got McDonalds vouchers. Thanks girls for playing an extra game. Kirra also got a McDonalds voucher.

Thanks to Skye for being our runner, Addy for her support and Lisa and George for running water. Thanks also to our 3 under 11 buddies who came to support and joined in as water carriers

Good job girls. See you at training.
