REPERrOIRE EVALUA TION GUIDELINES 78

The jazz ensemble has become one of the dominant areas of post-secondary musicinstruction and performance in Canada. The nature of the jazz ensemble makes it anentertaining and motivating force which requires that programming be directed toward thehighest quality repertoire to ensure that student musicians move beyond the superficialperformance into a genuinely creative musical experience.

This Unpublished Canadian Repertoire for University Jazz Ensembles IS anoutgrowth of a doctoral dissertation I in which detailed standards were developed andapplied to Canadian jazz repertoire in the areas of technical difficulty, improvisationalchallenge and pedagogical value. Panels of expert jazz educators assisted in the location ofrepertoire, and the development, refinement and application of standards to locatedrepertoire. The high quality of the included compositions results from the connoisseurshipof the expert jazz educator panels. This publication contains listings of difficult and verydifficult compositions for university performance. Educators with interests in secondaryschool jazz ensemble repertoire of lower degree of difficulty are encouraged to consult AGuide to Unpublished Canadian Jazz Ensemble Repertoire Suitable for StudentPerformers.2

The search for artistic and appropriate works for university level performers is atime-consuming task which is made more difficult by the fact that very little Canadian jazzrepertoire is published or available through music retailers. Although the location andevaluation of degree of difficulty of compositions has been as objective as possible, theuniqueness of each teaching situation must be acknowledged. Since ensemble technicalabilities differ, the choice of repertoire ultimately must depend on the music educator.

Unpublished Canadian Repertoire for University Jazz Ensembles reveals thatCanadian composers have provided excellent jazz compositions appropriate for post-secondary performance and that these unique and creative pieces should be included in theperformance libraries of Canadian universities and colleges to enhance the student'sawareness of their own unique jazz heritage.

Unpublished Canadian Repertoire for University Jazz Ensembles is limited tocompositions for jazz ensemble written by Canadian composers before July, 1993.

Very Difficult repertoire would be more demanding but suitable for advanced university orpre-prof essi onal performers.

Jazz Ensemble, Big Band or Stage Band compositions are defined as works written forfive saxophones, four to five trumpets, four to five trombones, piano and/or guitar, bass, drum set and/or percussion. Optional additional woodwind parts may be integrated withthe saxophone parts.

Bay City Bounce is an original medium-fast tempo swing composition in thekey of D minor, with great rhythmic interest and exciting ensemble figures. Itfeatures improvised solos for trumpet, trombone, alto saxophone and tenorsaxophone. Solo sections are each based on a D minor blues progression of twenty-four bars. Brass range demands are moderate with the lead trumpet generallyplaying up to a CfT but with an optional DfT (and optional lower octave). Trombonerange is moderate; the inclusion of a bass trombone is suggested to give added depthto the fourth trombone part. The third and fourth trombone parts are frequentlyscored as an ensemble with baritone and second tenor saxophones. The ensemblewriting is very idiomatic and improvised sections are based on accessible chordprogressions creating a musical and very playable composition. Rhythm sectionparts are fully notated including many stylistic suggestions with voicing andrhythmic outlines.

Frame For the Blues is based on the Slide HamptonlMaynard Fergusonarrangement recorded in the late 1950s. The form of the original composition isretained but the saxophone and brass parts have been expanded to standard jazzensemble instrumentation. In a slow blues feel, the composition features manytriplet figures on descending blues scale patterns. The arranger has created anexpressive composition of great depth, and has adapted many classic blues figures tosuit the modern large jazz ensemble. There are some very difficult 'double time feel'figures which are notated as sixty-fourth note runs for the ensemble. There is animprovised trombone solo, but the most substantial solo role is that of the leadtrumpet in a lengthy written melodic solo which will require extended range andendurance.

Serenity is based on a C minor blues melody composed by tenor saxophonistJoe Henderson. Characterised by a soft, sustained melody, the piece incorporates aharmonic structure that is extremely complex and includes many alterations, extensions and contemporary devices. The rhythm section parts include only asketch of the required performance material and will need explanation for a qualityperformance. Voicings are not included in the harmonically difficult piano or guitarparts. There is an extremely difficult unison saxophone soli based on improvisatorymotifs of Joe Henderson. The lead trumpet part ascends to a cn and must besustained with a lip trill on that note. Other brass instrument ranges are onlymoderately demanding. The composition requires an assured performance style inboth ensemble passages and improvised sections. Serenity would be rewarding inrehearsal and performance with a musically mature jazz ensemble

Southwood Road is an original composition which explores rhythmicdevelopment and interplay between sections of the ensemble. Figures are frequentlyoffset by one eighth note and must be placed extremely accurately by each player toproduce the intended harmonic and melodic effect. Although written for jazzensemble with improvisation, much of the emphasis appears to be on a classicalcontemporary exploration of rhythm and timbre combinations, described by thecomposer as "a somewhat eccentric rhythmic experiment." Improvised solos areincluded for clarinet or soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, trombone, and pianoor guitar. This intriguing contemporary composition is worthy of exploration.

]azzum Opus Unum was commissioned and premiered by the McGillUniversity jazz ensemble. The extended piece based on melodic fragments by].SBach, is in three movements: Rapidum, Lentum and Vivum. The writing is frequentlycontrapuntal in nature and includes complex harmonic settings of the Bach motifs. The percussionist's extended improvised solos in each movement affirm that this isclearly jazz. An extended ad lib cadenza for bass and drums links the first twomovements. The solo flugelhorn in the second movement functions completelyindependently of the other wind and brass players. A tuba part may be played onbass trombone. The lead trumpet part is challenging and centres in the high rangefor most of the fifteen-minute duration. This is an original composition in the sensethat rhythmic, melodic and harmonic patterns do not fall into common jazzensemble patterns; careful and detailed rehearsal of dynamics and rhythmic figureswill be required.

Solo passage assignments are flexible and may be performed by anyselected performers in the ensemble. The members of the saxophone section willneed good finger dexterity to perform a written ensemble soli based on the CharlieParker melody. The lead trumpet part is written to an Ebfl and requires a playerwith strength, endurance and flexibility. It is possible to perform the piece with onlythree trumpet and two trombone parts.
