Sustainability is complicated, but in principle or as a value it can be simple. Wastefulness is bad.. Energy, water, stuff/materials..$.. Studies show LEED buildings cost $675 less per occupant than conventional buildings, generating significant long term savings for the University: http://fortune.com/2012/04/11/new-evidence-that-going-green-pays-off/ 760,000 kWh of electricity and 877,000 gallons of water, which does not include persistence of behaviors H2H saves, at minimum, $5,000 in landfill costs for RPS and the University, as well as removing unsightly waste. Provides a service to students. Sustain IU has led the campus tree inventory, which saves IU money at two stages: first at data collection, using trained students rather than contracting externally we are poised to again this summer save IU around 350K; second, that data and subsequent analysis leads to cost saving decisions related to maintenance priorities, species selection, among others. These savings, though difficult to measure are significant, as USDA model projects estimate that campus trees are work nearly 1 million dollars annually on the Bloomington campus. We also know that our work on transportation, energy and buildings, and sustainable food benefit the health and well being of our campus community, generating savings in healthcare costs, increasing productivity, and helping with talent retention. Sustain IU also strives for efficiency as a unit, and in FY ‘19 we shifted several programs to be leaner and more effective. We shifted from two annual Symposiums to one each year, to be held in the spring. Eliminated a separate event, the fall catalyst awards and combined it with our Spring symposium, and moved from two annual intern cohorts to one cohort, making the internship a year long program. This allows us to go through the hiring process just once and we provide a richer experience for students.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission partnered with the State Utility Forecasting Group, Energy Center and Discovery Park, Purdue University, and the City West Lafayette to produce a 2017 Indiana Electricity Forecast. The researchers, using historical values and future projects, project a 17% increase in residential electricity costs, and a 16% increase in commercial electricity costs over the next five years from 2018 to 2023. Commercial electricity rate projections are shown below.

Met with Doug Trueblood and Ken Horracks (building systems) mid-June Boiler settings: Used to turn off above 80° Set to 70° (changed 6/19) Dehumidifier: Used to turn on at 50-60° Set to 65° (not positive when changed) Building chillers: Was set at 48 & 58 Set to 42 (changed 7/26) Second Tour with Doug and Ken: September 13th 2018 In attendance: Ken, Doug, Mark, Ben Brabson Conclusions: Controls done being changed Boiler was doing reheats (changed) Immediately lowered natural gas usage Beginning to consider changing motors September- already seeing reduction in natural gas usage Preliminary Laundry list: Upgrade all lighting to LEDs Occupancy sensors Upgrade motor efficiencies- replacing motors Third (cold weather) Tour: January 16th 2019 Finalized laundry list: Replace lighting with LEDs Occupancy sensors HVAC maintenance Such as replacing filters Then look deeper into HVAC- changing motors Some windows should be repaired Building is negative- need to balance Next steps: RFS for lighting Work orders for mostly everything else Bring to Keith for approval Currently pursuing installation of a thermal blanket $22,000 Regulates internal building temperature Progress: Electric usage Down 6.3% Natural Gas usage Down 27.2%
