Your chance to influence policy: give your thoughts to Parliament - UNLOCK have been contacted by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Local Government, who are running an inquiry into the criminal justice system and local government. This is a really great opportunity for people with past convictions to use their experiences to influence those who have the power to change the system. It would be really good if we could put forward a couple of people who have experienced prison, to ensure that the thoughts and experiences of what it really is like are represented properly. Visit http://www.unlock.org.uk/pressmedia.aspx?id=41 for more information, or ask questions by visiting the section on the UNLOCK Discussion Forum at http://forum.unlock.org.uk/default.aspx?f=6&m=768.

UNLOCK’s List of Insurers updated – We have updated the list of insurers that we refer people to who are encountering problems obtaining insurance because of an unspent conviction. To view this updated list, visit http://www.unlock.org.uk/userfiles/file/unlockinginsurance/UNLOCK%27s%20List%20of%20Insurers%20May%202009.pdf. Remember – you only have to disclose any convictions deemed “unspent” under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Article on the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 by an UNLOCK supporter – An UNLOCK supporter, ARM, has recently written a very powerful and persuasive article entitled “Rehabilitation of Offenders – Does the 1974 Act help them?” Visit http://www.unlock.org.uk//staticpage.aspx?pid=33 to view this article.

How can you find out about your criminal record? – UNLOCK have recently updated the Information & Advice section of the website with a section advising on how you can go about finding out your criminal record. We have been through every process ourselves, and have put anonymous copies of all on the page so that you can see what each of them looks like and what information they contain.
