    Research in the university context

Research program plans within Universities must:

Be developed within the context of overall University strategic goals, policies and procedures

Articulate both short and long term plans to meet those goals

Be co-ordinated and performance tracked both internally and externally, e.g. ERA reporting, ATN reporting,

    TEQSA reporting

Be benchmarked against domestic and international key performance indicators

    Be mindful of Government initiatives:

    Sustainable Research Excellence (SRE)

Excellence in Innovation for Australia (EIA)

However, progress reporting for research programs is notoriously difficult given the many

moving components of a holistic research program

Are we recruiting enough younger staff in order to ensure knowledge transfer from more

experienced staff? Does Department X have a significantly different age/level/gender/work function profile to

    Department Y?

How does this affect our capacity to produce research? (Broad subjective assessment)

Are we recruiting enough males/females to ensure strengths of gender types enhance our

    Department?

Do we need to consider any gender-specific recruitment strategies or salary packaging to

    redress imbalances in our Department?
