INTRODUCTIONThepurposeofthishandbookistoprovideapplicantstoandstudentsintheMasterofScienceinClinicalMentalHealthCounseling(CMCH)programwithinformationabouttheprogramrequirements,expectations,policiesandprocedures.Facultydiscussthehandbookwithstudentsatorientation,andstudentsareexpectedtoreadthehandbookandaskforanynecessaryclarification.Thefacultyreservetherighttochangeormodifythehandbookatanytime.Uponmodification,enrolledstudentswillbenotifiedofanysubstantivechanges.

PROGRAMDESCRIPTION&HISTORYTheClinicalMentalHealthCounselingprogramisaprofessionalcounselinggraduateprogramthatleadstotheMasterofScienceinClinicalMentalHealthCounselingdegree.Theprogrampreparesgraduatestoworkasprofessionalcounselorsbyservingasthepre-credentialeducationalrequirementforlicensureasaprofessionalcounselorinthestateofWisconsin*.TheprogrammaintainsacounselingidentityaspartofthePsychologyDepartmentandtheCollegeofNaturalandHealthSciences.

Theneedforclinicalmentalhealthcounselorscontinuestoincreaseintheregionandstate.Withthedevelopmentofmentalhealthparitylaws,morepeopleareaccessinghealthinsuranceandmentalhealthservices.Thedemandforhighlytrainedcounselors,offeringevidence-basedinterventionsinmentalhealthtreatmentsettings,existsinclinics,agencies,integrativecaresettings,andprivatepractice.Studentswilldevelopskillscriticaltoeffectiveclinicalmentalhealthcounselingsuchas:assessment,diagnosis,intervention,advocacy,andprogramevaluation.

ACMHCmaster’sdegreecanleadtoworkasaprofessionalcounselorworkingwitharangeofpopulations(adults,couples,groups,andfamiliesandchildren)inavarietyofsettingsincluding:•MentalHealthoutpatientcare•Hospitals•Clinics•Agencies•IntegrativeCareSettings•PrivatePractice

Theprogramusesafull-time,cohortmodel.Newstudentsareacceptedtobegintheprograminthefallsemester.Ablendoftraditionalface-to-face,onlineandhybridcourses,aswellasfull-andhalf-semestercourseformatsareusedtoaccommodatestudentneedsandresponsibilities.Studentsareabletocompletetheprograminseven,continuousacademicterms.TheBoardofRegentsoftheUniversityofWisconsinSystemauthorizedtheprogramin2017.The2018-2019academicyearwastheinauguralyearoftheprogramandcoincidedwiththe50thanniversaryoftheUniversityofWisconsin-Parkside,whichiscommittedtobecoming“apremierregionaluniversitythattransformslives”throughcareer-relevantacademicprogramsthatprepare“individualsforthecomplexityof21stCenturylife.”(UW-ParksidePillarsofExcellence:https://www.uwp.edu/explore/offices/chancellor/strategicplanning.cfm.)*Theprogrammaysatisfytheeducationalrequirementsforlicensureinotherstates/provinces.Studentsinterestedinworkingasaprofessionalcounselorinotherstates/provincesshouldcheckwiththecredentialingagencyintherespectivestate/provincepriortobeginningtheprogramtolearnabouttheireducationalrequirements.

VISION,MISSION&OBJECTIVESVisionTheClinicalMentalHealthCounselingprogramattheUniversityofWisconsin-Parksideseekstotrainandeducatestudentstobeprofessionalcounselorswhomeetthementalhealth,wellness,educationandcareerneedsofallmembersoftheircommunitiesandthebroaderregion.Programfacultyaimtofosterstudents’professional,personal,andsocialgrowthsostudentsdeveloptobeethical,trauma-informed,multiculturallycompetentcliniciansandleadersinthecounselingprofession.ThisbuildsuponthevisionoftheCollegeofNaturalandHealthSciences(CNHS):“TheCollegeofNaturalandHealthScienceswillbearegionalleaderthroughexcellenceinteaching,researchandservicetotheuniversityandgreatercommunity”.(VisionStatementoftheCNHS:https://www.uwp.edu/learn/colleges/naturalhealthsciences.cfm).MissionTopreparecounselors-in-trainingtomeetthementalhealth,wellness,educationandcareerneedsoftheircommunitiesandbroaderregion,withacommitmenttounderservedpopulationsandworkingtoeliminatementalhealthstigma,throughbothprofessionalleadershipandprovidingethical,trauma-informedandculturallycompetentcounselingservices,informedbycurrentresearch,holisticcare,andclinicallyeffectiveinterventions.ThisbuildsuponthemissionofthePsychologyDepartment,which,inpart,iscommittedtopreparingstudents,throughcollaboratingwithfaculty,toaddresscommunityneedsandprovidingserviceatthecampus,local,nationalandgloballevels.Additionally,thisbuildsuponthemissionoftheCNHS,whichis:

Broadeningtheintellectualexperienceofstudentsthroughinquiry-basedlaboratoryandfieldcourses,originalresearch,andhands-oninternships,undertheguidanceofteacher-scholarswhoareactiveinscholarshipandresearch.

• Ensuringthatstudentsmastereffectiveoralandwrittencommunication,reasonedjudgment,andsocialandpersonalresponsibilitynecessarytoassumeleadershiprolesintheirprofessionsandinlocal,regionalandglobalspheres.

• Utilizingcontemporaryandemerginginstructionalmethodologies.• Engagingfacultyandstaffwhoemphasizeexcellenceinteachingandresearchfor

ProgramObjectivesProfessionalCounselingisdefinedbytheAmericanCounselingAssociationas“aprofessionalrelationshipthatempowersdiverseindividuals,families,andgroupstoaccomplishmentalhealth,wellness,education,andcareergoals”.1Therearefivecorecompetenciesandassociatedlearningoutcomesthatstudentswilldemonstrateasaresultofcompletingtheproposeddegreeprogram.CompetencyA:Understandthehistoryandfoundationofthecounselingprofession,andtherolesofProfessionalCounselors.Uponcompletionoftheprogramstudentswillbeabletodemonstratethiscompetencythroughthefollowingoutcomes:

• Describeprofessionalrolesandfunctionsofprofessionalcounselorsintreatmentsettings,communityorganizations,andprivatepractices.

• Demonstrateawarenessofprofessionalorganizations,licenseandcertificationrequirementsoftheprofession,andknowledgeofpublicpolicyimplicationsforprofessionalcounselors.

APPLICATIONPROCESSInformationSessionsDuringtheacademicyear,informationsessionsareheldmonthly(withtheexceptionofDecember)forpeopleconsideringapplyingtotheprogram.Attendanceisoptional.Tolearnmoreandtoregister:https://www.uwp.edu/learn/programs/master-of-science-in-clinical-mental-health-counseling.cfmApplicationProcedures,Requirements&MaterialsTheearlydecisionapplicationdateisNovember1.WhenNovember1fallsonaweekend,thenthenextbusinessdaywillserveastheearlydecisionapplicationdate.CompleteapplicationsreceivedbyNovember1willbereviewedandadmissionsdecisionswillbemadebylateNovember.AdmissionisforthefollowingFallsemester.Forexample,anapplicantwhosubmitsacompletedapplicationbyNovember1,2020willbeconsideredforadmissiontotheFall2021semester.ThestandarddecisionapplicationdateisFebruary15.WhenFebruary15fallsonaweekend,thenthenextbusinessdaywillserveasthestandarddecisionapplicationdate.CompleteapplicationswillbereviewedandadmissionsdecisionswillbemadeinearlyMarch.AdmissionisfortheupcomingFallsemester.Forexample,anapplicantwhosubmitsacompletedapplicationbyFebruary15,2021willbeconsideredforadmissiontotheFall2021semester.Graduateexamscores(e.g.,GREorMAT)arenotrequired.Applicantsarerequiredtohavea:

1. bachelor’sdegreebythestartoftheCMHCprogram.2. minimumof18creditsofundergraduatecourseworkinthesocialsciencesbythestart

oftheCMHCprogram.a. Coursesfromthefollowingacademicdisciplinesareconsideredsocialsciencefor

thepurposesofapplyingtotheCMHCprogramatUW-Parkside:psychology,sociology,anthropology,criminaljustice,communication,education,geography,politicalscience,andeconomics.Otherdisciplinesmaybeaccepted.

3. minimumundergraduateGPAof3.0.a. ApplicantswhodonotmeettheminimumundergraduateGPArequirementmay

submitadditionalmaterialstodemonstratethattheyareacademicallypreparedforgraduatework,suchasGREorMATscores.

b. ApplicantswithanundergraduateGPAbetween2.75-2.99maybeadmittedonaprobationarystatus(withoutsubmittingGREorMATscores).

fallsbelow3.00.However,nostudentsadmittedonprobationwillbedroppeduntiltheyhaveattemptedatleast9graduatecreditsatUW-Parkside,regardlessofsemesterGPA.

Anyoftheprovisionsabovenotwithstanding,studentswhosecumulativeGPAfallsbelow2.00willbedroppedfromtheuniversity.Thisprovisiondoesnotrequirethatstudentsbeonprobationinitiallyanddoesapplytostudentsadmittedonprobationwhohaveattemptedfewerthan9credits.Studentswhoaredismissedfromtheprogramorfromtheuniversitymaynotbereadmittedforoneyear.ReadmissionStudentswhohavebeendroppedmustapplyforreadmissionontheusualgraduateapplicationform.Dependingonthereasonfordismissal,theseapplicantsmayberequiredtotakeanexaminationsuchastheMATorGRE,providedocumentationofongoingcounseling,orfurnishothercredentials.Applicantsforreadmissionmustpresentevidencetotheprogramthattheyarenowlikelytodosatisfactorywork.Readmittedstudentsaresubjecttotherequirementsineffectatthetimeoftheirreadmission.

CLINICALEXEPERIENCESDuringthefinal3semestersoftheCMHCprogram,studentsengageintherequiredclinicalexperiencecourses.ThesecoursesconsistofCMHC794CounselingPracticum(3credits);CMHC795CounselingInternshipI(3credits);andCMHC796CounselingInternshipII(3credits).CMHC794,CounselingPracticum,requires100hoursatadesignatedplacementsetting,ofwhichaminimumof40hoursareface-to-faceclientcontacthours.CMHC795and796,CounselingInternshipIandII,respectively,require300hourseach(600hourstotal)atadesignatedplacementsetting,ofwhichaminimumof120hours(240hourstotal)areface-to-faceclientcontact.Applicationtoclinicalsites,expectations,andrequirementsforpracticumandinternshiparedetailedintheClinicalHandbook.ThishandbookisdisseminatedattheClinicalOrientation.TheClinicalOrientationoccursafterthe2ndsemesteroftheprogram.Studentswillbeprovideddirectionathowtosearch,apply,andsecureapracticumandinternshipsetting.Studentsarerequiredtoobtainandmaintainprofessionalliabilityinsurancecoverageduringthetotalityoftheclinicalexperiencesphaseoftheprogram,whichcanbepurchasedthroughtheAmericanCounselingAssociation.StudentswillneedtobecomemembersoftheAmericanCounselingAssociation(https://www.counseling.org/).Ratesformalpracticeliabilityinsuranceareprovidedhere:https://www.counseling.org/membership/membership-benefits.Proofofinsuranceisrequiredpriortopracticumenrollment.Studentsmayberequiredtocompleteacriminalbackgroundcheckpriortopracticumandinternshipcourses.Furthermore,somepracticumandinternshipsitesmayberequiredbylawtohavethesechecksonfileforpracticumandinternshipstudents.Certaintypesofinvestigations,convictions,orarrestsmayinterfereinastudent’sabilitytoparticipateinclinicalplacements-therefore,potentiallydelayinggraduationorpreventingcompletionoftheprogramofstudy.Ifyouhavequestionsaboutthis,thenconsultwithyouracademicadvisorand/orthedirectorofclinicaltrainingwithinthefirsttwosemestersofyourprogram.
