Tosin Adebisi Senior International Officer Regional responsibilities: Africa and the Middle East Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 876520 Tosin has responsibility for the international recruitment strategy in Africa and the Middle East. He also leads on customer relationship management (CRM) at the enquirer/pre-application stage of the student journey. He is a graduate of the Robert Gordon University and Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) with an active research interest in the psychology of work, specifically culture and cynicism. Tosin joined the University in 2013 from University of Portsmouth where he worked for four years on key markets in Africa and West Asia.

Luis Ananguren International Officer Regional responsibilities: East and Southeast Asia Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 872833 As part of the East and South East Asia team, Luis has country responsibilities for Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia. Luis joined the University in 2014 from the University of Kent and has six years of experience working in the Middle East, Latin American and the Caribbean markets. Luis is originally from Venezuela and came to the UK to study International Relations and Politics at the University of Sheffield before becoming the International Students’ Officer in the University of Sheffield’s Student Union. Here he was responsible for a range of activities including the University’s International Week.

Peter Boddy International Partnerships Officer Regional responsibilities: International Partnerships Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 876852 As an International Partnerships Officer within the International Office, Peter supports the University’s international partnerships, which include alliances for student exchange and study abroad, student recruitment, international research and emerging institutional links that combine a number of collaborative initiatives. Under the direction of the Assistant Head (Strategic Partnerships), Peter works closely with international officers and regional leads, as well as academic and professional services staff, to take forward new partnerships and provide support to a range of projects. Peter joined the International Office in December 2013, having previously worked as the Executive Officer for the Sussex International Summer School since 2009.

Georgie joined the International Office in April 2015, having previously worked as an International Officer at Kingston University.

Cathy Drew International Officer Regional responsibilities: Europe Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 678466 Cathy currently has responsibility for European recruitment, as well as UK based international recruitment. Cathy is a Sussex graduate, and worked in the UK recruitment team before moving to the international team. She has experience in presenting and delivering workshops to students on all aspects of the application cycle.

Katie is currently on maternity leave.

Sarah joined the team 1st May 2013 as International Admin Coordinator. Sarah previously worked as a Personal Assistant at City College Brighton and Hove and the University of Cambridge.

Martin Hookham Head of International Office Responsibilities: International student recruitment and Sussex Abroad programmes Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 873826

Martin leads the International Office at Sussex, with strategic oversight for international recruitment, international partnerships, student and staff mobility. Since joining Sussex in 2011 Martin has restructured and expanded the international team to cover a wider diversity of markets including the opening of overseas offices in China, Nigeria and Malaysia. In addition, Martin has been instrumental in establishing an on-campus intercultural annual event and undertaking pioneering work with the Guardian online in a feature called the Global Student. Prior to joining the University of Sussex, Martin was Head of International Recruitment at the University of Roehampton working in markets throughout Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Australasia. His work includes being shortlisted for a Times Higher Award for international marketing publications. A graduate of Product Design from the University of Huddersfield, Martin is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and completed an MBA in Higher Education Management at the Institute of Education, University College London in 2012.

Katherine Jarvis International Administrative Officer Responsibilities: Administration for the International Office Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 877341 Katherine oversees the administration team within the International Office. The administration supports the operational activities related to the development of the University of Sussex’s international recruitment and partnerships. Part of the role includes assisting International Officers with the logistics of the overseas trips. Katherine joined Sussex in 2008, previously working in administrative roles within both the private and public sectors. For the past 5 years she has worked as a member of the team as a PA & Events Coordinator and was recently promoted to manage the administration for the team as the International Office has changed its structure.

Siobhan has been with the International Office since the beginning of March 2015, and supports the operational work of the Administrative Coordinators and International Officers. Her role includes helping to orchestrate visits to the University of Sussex, event planning and support, database work, content management, communications, freight and travel support.

Siobhan Marshall Senior International Officer Regional responsibilities: East and South East Asia Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 678265 Siobhan leads on the International Marketing and Recruitment strategy in East and South East Asia. Whilst overseeing the region as a whole, she has specific country responsibilities in China, and manages the China Project Manager based in Beijing. Siobhan also leads on the conversion strategies for the International Office. Siobhan joined the university in 2010 from the University of Reading and she has recruitment experience across most of Asia. Prior to joining the higher education sector, she was an English language teacher in Japan. She has a CIM Professional Diploma in International Marketing.

Amy Pan Project Manager, Beijing Responsibilities: China Email: [email protected] Tel: 0086 (010) 8525 1111 Ext 315 Amy is based in Beijing and is responsible for supporting the international team in the development and implementation of our marketing and recruitment strategy in China. Amy is focused on strengthening relationships with our key recruitment agents, institutional partners and alumni networks across China. Gathering market intelligence is also a key part of her role. Amy joined the team in January 2013, having gained 10 years of experience in the sector, providing consulting service for Chinese Students planning to study in the UK. Her experience also includes two years working for a language school in Bournemouth.

Guy Robson International Officer Regional responsibilities: Africa and the Middle East Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 877442 Guy is responsible for International Marketing and Recruitment for Africa and the Middle East. As well as regular overseas trips to the region, his work involves building relationships with embassies and Cultural Attaché’s offices here in the UK. Guy regularly hosts visits from both private sponsors and ministry representatives. He also leads on customer relationship management for overseas representatives. Prior to joining the University of Sussex, Guy worked at the University of Southampton and Portsmouth University gaining experience in most aspects of the student life cycle.

John Sander Senior International Officer Regional responsibilities: Central, South Asia (sub-continent) and Digital Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 877248 John has been a part of the International team since 2006 and leads on the International Marketing and Recruitment strategy in Central and South Asia (Indian sub-continent). Historically, he has worked in all the territories we actively cover except Latin America. Whilst overseeing the region as a whole, he has specific country responsibilities in India and Sri Lanka. John also leads on the digital strategies for the International Office for example; our web site, social media presence, webinars, virtual exhibitions and video conference based events.

Victoria Shaw Assistant Head of International Office Responsibilities: Strategic partnerships Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 678373 As Assistant Head (Strategic Partnerships) within the International Office, Victoria oversees the University’s international partnerships, which include alliances for student abroad and exchange, student recruitment (with universities, colleges and sub-degree providers), international research and emerging institutional links that combine a number of collaborative initiatives. Victoria works closely with International Officers and regional leads, as well as academic and professional services staff, to initiate new partnerships and provide support to academic and executive-driven projects. She also manages the University’s International Partnership Development Fund, a strategic fund to drive high-impact international partnership programmes. With a background in ELT publishing in Asia, Victoria has worked in international higher education for ten years at UK universities, overseeing international recruitment from, and partnerships with, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand during this time.

Pam Thompson PA to the Head and Assistant Head of International Responsibilities: PA to the Head and Assistant Head of International Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 876737 Pam joined the International Office in June 2014 and provides PA and administrative support to Martin Hookham and Victoria Shaw. She also assists the International Admin team with schedules for visitors to the University, worldwide staff travel arrangements, commission, agency agreements and freight requests. Pam was previously in temporary employment as a PA in a number of organisations both in the private and public sector.

Gareth Topp Senior International Officer Regional Responsibilities: The Americas Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 876539 Gareth joined Sussex in 2013. He has responsibility for overseeing the University’s international recruitment strategy for the Americas both North and South. Gareth also leads on the University’s international marketing collateral. Gareth joined Sussex from the University of York, where he spent four years as an International Officer, with experience recruiting from East Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, Europe and North Africa. He also held a special responsibility for developing new markets through which he made inaugural visits to Kurdistan in Iraq, Egypt and Russia. Prior to that, Gareth held marketing roles in local government and at the British Council.

Beverley Traylen International Admin Coordinator Responsibilities: Administration for the International Office Email: [email protected] Tel: 01273 877623 Beverley helps with the smooth running of the international administration within the International team ensuring that the operational support is given when the International Officers are travelling overseas. Her role also includes delivering our overseas representatives commission process, organising the International Student Ambassador Scheme, updating databases to ensure the team has accurate and up to date information and supporting the International Administrative Officer with events and projects that occur. Beverley has worked at Sussex since July 2004 and has seen the International team grow over this period, both in team numbers and the countries that the International Officers travel to.

Marcus Williams Director of Student Recruitment, Marketing and International Affairs Responsibilities: Student Recruitment and Marketing Email: [email protected] Marcus is Director of Student Recruitment and International Affairs. He heads up a team of around 60 staff, encompassing 4 areas: UK student recruitment, International student recruitment, Study Abroad, Marketing and Communications. Prior to joining Sussex in January 2010, Marcus headed up UK student recruitment at the University of Birmingham from 2003 – 2010 and before that had been an Assistant Registrar and Senior International Officer at the University of Warwick from 1996 – 2003. Marcus is a graduate of the University of Warwick, from where he received a Bachelors in Politics and International Studies, Masters in Race and Ethnic Studies and more recently, his MBA. Marcus reports to the Registrar and Secretary, John Duffy.

As part of the East and South East Asia team, Victoria has country responsibilities for Thailand, South Korea and Malaysia. Victoria started her career at Sussex in the Marketing department in March of 2014. Prior to joining the higher education sector, Victoria taught in a UK secondary school and then worked for the non-profit organisation Pestalozzi International Village Trust. Victoria has an ISCA Certificate in Charity Management and is currently working towards her Masters in NGO Management.
