INTRODUCTION

The Sport Management program’s mission is to prepare undergraduate students for a

wide range of positions within the sport industry. The program’s faculty strives to create

an active learning environment that encourages students to be engaged, ethical, and

competent sport management professionals. The department’s teaching foundations value

both theory and practice as students participate in experiential learning, community

service, and peer and professional networking. These experiences are invaluable to

graduates as they enter into the multi-faceted sport industry as future leaders.

The practicum is one of the required experiential learning experiences designed to allow

students to gain actual experiences in the Sport Management field under the direct

supervision of a Sport Management professional. The practicum experience is completed

on campus with the USI Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness Center (SPTM 302 – 150

hours), the USI Intercollegiate Athletic Department (SPTM 303 – 150 hours) and at any

location (SPTM 305). Both of these experiences are essential to the student’s preparation

and education for entry into sport management. The practicum offers sport management

majors the opportunity to take important steps toward future success. The practicum

experiences provide numerous benefits:

Students can develop new skills and apply classroom learning in a real world

environment.

Allow students to gain valuable experience while being evaluated as a source of

future employment.

Students have the opportunity to network with industry professionals which can

be a deciding factor in securing employment.

Offers USI or other businesses (if applicable) an opportunity to recruit future

employees who have proven themselves as interns.

Can be an impressive listing on a student’s resume and can be a deciding factor in

securing employment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The practicum requirement for the University of Southern Indiana Sport Management

program is SPTM 302 – Practicum in Recreational Sports and SPTM 303 – Practicum in

Intercollegiate Athletics or SPTM 305 – Practicum in Sport Management. The

prerequisite for both of these courses is SPTM 283 and Sophomore Standing.

The practicum exposes students to a practical learning environment through which they

apply classroom theory to reality. The practicum usually occurs on a part-time basis,

during the student’s sophomore or junior year, and focuses on specific objectives.

Students are allowed to take other coursework with the practicum, and therefore the sites

are within a reasonable driving distance of the university. The practicum integrates

coursework with planned and supervised recreational sports experiences for a total of 150

hours and intercollegiate athletic experiences for 150 hours. The Practicum in

Recreational Sports is completed at the USI Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness Center or

other agreed upon facility if the RFWC is full. The Practicum in Intercollegiate Athletics

is completed at the USI Intercollegiate Athletic Department or other agreed upon facility

if the Athletic Department is full.

The practicum experience is expected to enhance the student’s academic experiences and

include academic requirements and a variety of assignments that document the

experience and provide opportunities for reflection via a required weekly logs and

reports, student personal evaluation paper, presentation, midterm/final student and

employer evaluations, and portfolio.

Students are highly encouraged to adopt the following text:

Bower, G. G. (2014). A guide to field experiences and careers in sport and physical

activity. Deer Park, NY: Linus Publications.

Student may already have the text from their prior field experience course completed

their freshmen year (SPTM 283).

PRACTICUM PROCESS

Two sport management practicum courses are required within the major at USI – SPTM

302 and SPTM 303 (old program) Or the new program requires SPTM 305. Consult with

your advisor or review your audit to determine the practicum to enroll in according to

your particular program.

The process is as follows:

1 Meet with Advisor - Students meet with faculty advisor to determine eligibility,

discuss areas of interest and the timing of the practicum.

2. Meet with Faculty Internship Coordinator - Each student is required to obtain

a practicum at an approved site. The practicum in Intercollegiate Athletics is

usually completed in the USI Intercollegiate Athletic Department if space permits

or the student is chosen. If the student is not placed with the USI Intercollegiate

Athletic Department, the student will work with the Faculty Internship

Coordinator to determine acceptable agencies or institutions with which the

practicum may be established. Approval to proceed with contacting specific

agencies will be completed during this meeting.

Students should research practicum opportunities in the event the USI Athletic

Department does not have space or does not choose the student, at least 3-6

months prior to the beginning of their internship practicum. Procrastination by the

student could result in failure to secure a practicum at a preferred site during the

desired semester.

Page 5: University of Southern Indiana Sport Management program · PDF fileFinal Presentation Outline ... The practicum requirement for the University of Southern Indiana Sport Management

5

3. Orientation - Students must attend a mandatory orientation prior to beginning

their practicum. The orientation will be scheduled following pre-registration

during the fall and spring semesters before the practicum begins so the application

process is not delayed. If a student cannot make the orientation another time will

be set-up for the student to meet with the Faculty Internship [Practicum]

Coordinator. Students will have the opportunity to meet with the supervisor of the

USI Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness Center during the orientation meeting. An

interview process will follow.

4. Develop Preliminary Materials - Students must develop a well-written and

current resume, cover letter, and reference page. Students should update the

resume, cover letter, and reference page that were developed for their previous

experiences (SPTM 283). The student should give the resume, cover letter, and

reference page directly to the supervisor of the Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness

Center and/or the Intercollegiate Athletic Department.

5. Submit Paperwork - Once the practicum paperwork (completed application,

work agreement, and learning goals) is completed by the supervisor of the

practicum experience, students should submit the documents to the Faculty

Internship [Practicum] Coordinator PRIOR to beginning the experience. In

addition, students should submit a resume, cover letter, and reference. The

paperwork must be submitted by the first week of each semester session.

6. Submit Assignments - Students will be required to submit timesheets and

reports, student and employer midterm/final evaluations, presentation, student

personal evaluation paper, and portfolio. An outline of due dates is provided on

the Kinesiology and Sport website and located on Blackboard. Assignments are

described in greater detail within this handbook.
