Overview of the CollegeThe College of Engineering and Computing offers a diverse graduate education with some of the top researchers in the nation. We have one of the largest group of energy researchers in the southeast, with just over half of our faculty doing research in some aspect of the wide-range of energy fields including batteries, biomass, clean coal, electricity, future fuels, hydrogen, hydrogen fuel cells, photovoltaics, nuclear, solid oxide fuel cells and more. We are the only program in the state of South Carolina to offer a graduate degree program in Nuclear Energy. We are also the only program in the state to offer classes in computer game programming and design.

The recent survey data released by National Research Council ranked all of our departments for faculty research productivity as number one in the state; three of departments received top national rankings with Chemical Engineering ranking in the top 30 in the nation, Electrical Engineering, top 10, and Mechan-ical Engineering in the top 35 in the nation.

Our faculty are recognized nationally and internationally as being leaders in their fields. Of our 106 researchers, 26 are National Science Foundation Young Investigator/CAREER award winners; 9 faculty hold 12 Fellowships including Fellowships in the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.; one is the state’s only active member of the National Academy of Engineering; and one is a distinguished recipient of The Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor awarded by the state’s Governor (two of our retired faculty also hold this distinction).

The College of Engineering and Computing is a rapidly growing college seeing a 42% increase in undergraduate enrollment in a five year period of time (2007-2012). Our physical footprint covers two blocks in the City of Columbia with fac-ulty, classroom and research space located in six different buildings: Swearingen Engineering Center, 300 Main Street, Horizon 1, 1200 Catawba Street, the Condi-tion-Based Maintenance Resesarch Center, and the Machine Shop. We also teach in the Sumwalt Building (a building we built) located near the Horseshoe and at the IT-ology Center (located in the Bank of America building in downtown Co-lumbia). Within the next five years, we will be engaged in a campaign to build an additional building as our College continues to gain momentum and recognition.

A degree from the College of Engineering and Computing carries a rich 100+ year old history of innovation and leadership. Our alumni include John Swearingen, former CEO of Standard Oil Company of Illinois (later Amoco and now BP) (1938 Chemical), Honorable Andrew H. Card, Jr., former White House Chief of Staff (1971 Civil); Krista Marks, general manager, Disney Online Kerpoof! Studios (1989 Electrical); Chris King and Michael Sechrest, founders of Speedtree used in Avatar (Chris: 1993 and 1996, Michael: 1994 and 1996, both Computer Engineering); and many others.

We invite you to come visit us in person or online and see why we are rapidly becoming one of the top engineering and computing schools in the nation.
