    Scope: A collection of papers relating to work on materials science carried out by John

    Douglas Eshelby (1916-1961)

    Dates: 1957-1981

    Level: Fonds

    Extent: 20 boxes

    Name of creator: John Douglas Eshelby (1916-1981)

    Administrative / biographical history:

    The collection consists of correspondence, notebooks, research papers and miscellaneous

    documents relating to the working life of John Douglas Eshelby, notably relating to the

    subject area of materials science, but also including mathematics, theoretical physics,

    languages and archaeology.

    John Douglas (“Jock”) Eshelby, born in 1916, was privately educated and took his degree at

    Bristol University. After holding several early research posts, he worked in the Cavendish

    Laboratory in Cambridge; was elected a Fellow of Churchill College; was then appointed

    Reader in the Faculty of Materials (Theory of Materials) at Sheffield; and became Professor

    in 1971. He died in 1981.

    NOTES

    1) Nearly all the reprints are in numbered envelopes. A few very large items are separate and

    indicated by ‘No envelope’ in column 3. A few others are in spring back folders and

    indicated by an F after the ‘envelope’ number in column 3. Each reprint is asigned a number

    such as 43/12 indicating that it is reprint 12 in envelope 43. Numbers have not been written

    on the reprints themselves.

    2) The reprint material is listed in a table with the following columns. It may of course be

    sorted by any column.

    Column 1-Type of material

    d=dissertation

    e=JDE ms (typed, handwritten) or anything with JDE note

    h=handwritten ms or letter, not by JDE, or anything with handwritten note

    p=published paper

    r=report or bound translation

    t=typed ms or letter, not by JDE

    x=Xerox or other copy

    Column 2- Subject

    C=condensed matter

    D=dislocations, generalized continuum mechanics, continuous distributions of dislocations

    E=elasticity, plasticity, fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics

  • F=fracture, fracture mechanics

    G=miscellaneous, including any correspondence

    I=inclusions, interfaces, transformations, twins, composites

    L=liquid crystals, disclinations

    M=mathematics

    P=Energy momentum tensor

    T=theoretical physics

    V=point defects

    Column 3- envelope number where reprint is located (within envelope papers are, usually, in

    alphabetical order of first author)

    Column 4- date of item

    Column 5- first & second authors (+ ea = et alii if more than two)

    Column 6- title & occasionally a comment

    Column 7- reference & occasional comments

    3) Generally the umlaut and accents are omitted, but occasionally e is added after the umlaut

    vowel

    4) Some abbreviations are used, mostly in papers in the first few envelopes

    d(s) = dislocation(s)

    ea = et alia
