NEW STUDENT ORIENTATIONNEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS
AUGUST 30 TO SEPTEMBER 4, 2017AUGUST 30 TO SEPTEMBER 4, 2017
UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS
UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS | 2UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS | 2
On behalf of all the Orientation Leaders (OL’s) and Buffal-O Team (Johnston O-Team), the team of Coordinators would like to welcome you to the University of Redlands and the start of the rest of your life as a Bulldog. Our goal during Orientation is to welcome new students and their families, and begin the process of integrating new students into the University’s intellectual, cultural, social, and personal opportunities. The Orientation Leaders and Buffal-O Team will guide and support you as you begin to find your own place within the University community. This week is all about new students having fun, meeting new people, and becoming a part of the Redlands family.
You will notice some of the orientation events are marked with #B4IGRAD. These events are just some from a larger collection of things to do at Redlands before you graduate. To earn fun prizes, snap a picture of yourself doing the activity and upload it to the URconnect “Order of the Bulldog” portal. You will receive your #B4IGRAD list at your first OL meeting on Wednesday.
If you have questions or need help with anything throughout the week, we are here for you. There is also a Student Hub on the second floor of the Hunsaker University Center (Hunsaker) in the Student Leadership and Involvement Center (SLIC) where OL’s and others will be available to assist you. Hunsaker is directly across from the Irvine Commons (dining hall). Near the fountain are stairs that directly lead into the Student Hub (SLIC).
We will be available at the times listed here:
Wednesday 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Sunday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
If you need help but can’t make it to the Student Hub, you can call 909-748-8100 or extension 8100 from a campus phone.
And don’t forget to keep checking URconnect, as polls, special reminders, and important information will be displayed daily. Have a great Orientation, and remember, WE are here for YOU!
Och Tamale!
Hiossy, Meg, Jake, and Michael Alex Ries M.Ed, Advisor Orientation Coordinators Director of Student Engagement
Savanna Johnston Center Intern
Hello from the Student Orientation CoordinatorsThe New Student Orientation Program is your introduction to life on campus. Whether you are new to college life or transferring from another institution, this is your opportunity to get to know our community and kick-start your adventure as a University of Redlands student. Please take time to review this entire booklet and remember— each event listed has a specific purpose and is designed for your active participation.
Through these scheduled events, you will learn all the essential information about academic life, important resources, and the campus community. Many social events are planned to give you the opportunity to meet other students and have fun. By the end of Orientation you will be amazed how much you already know about the U of R!
To our students balancing this schedule with work, family, and other commitments: All the events are designed to lay a foundation of success, so we encourage students to participate in the program as much as possible. Research shows that students who find ways to become meaningfully involved outside of the classroom, and who are able to find a community with which they connect are more academically successful. We recognize that full participation may not be possible for everyone so please note that the schedule designates mandatory events and events tailored specifically for commuter or transfer students. We also recommend talking with your Orientation Leaders, as they will be your best resource to help you make decisions about which events would be most beneficial for you.
There are many individuals available to assist you throughout New Student Orientation: Residence Life and Housing staff, Orientation Leaders, Peer Advisors, and all of your faculty, University staff members, and administrators. All of us will be very visible and accessible throughout Orientation and beyond.
We hope you make the most of your experience at Redlands.
Enjoy!
Sawa Kurotani, Ph.D. Jared Rodrigues, Ph.D. Associate Dean Director of Community Standards College of Arts and Sciences and Wellbeing

Meal Plan Dining If you purchased a University meal plan, it will begin with breakfast on Monday, September 4th. That morning, you will receive your meal plan Dining Dollars for the fall semester based on the meal plan you have chosen. University of Redlands meal plans are based on a retail, declining balance system. This plan was designed with community, value, sustainability, and flexibility in mind. Students may use their Dining Dollars wherever or whenever they wish, including to purchase meals for other students and/or guests. Students will control the balance of their meal plan account by purchasing meals as they see fit. Dining Dollars are funds held in each student’s personal account and are accessible for retail priced menu items whenever any of the dining areas are open. Dining Dollars are distributed twice each year, at the beginning of the fall semester and at the beginning of the spring semester, and are allotted to fund your meal purchases through the fall, spring, and May Term sessions.
Pacing Yourself One of the most challenging and educational aspects of a declining balance dining plan is learning how to pace your spending over the entire semester. Your initial balance seems like a lot of money, and it’s easy to lose track of your purchases since Dining Dollars is a cashless system.
How to Pace Yourself Request a receipt whenever you make a purchase using your Dining Dollar account. This will give you an immediate, up-to-date balance of how much you have left.
Each day we will post a chart showing daily “on-pace” balances for the day. Just compare the pace chart recommended balance for your meal plan to the actual balance on your register receipt.
Dining Dollar Forfeiture Declining Credit Balance (DCB) dollars are never refundable and have no cash value. Although DCB dollars carry over from one semester to the next, including May Term (see above), it is the student’s responsibility to manage their DCB dollars appropriately. All DCB dollars remaining at the end of each academic year are forfeited. Students who permanently withdraw from the University forfeit any remaining DCB dollars. The effective date of withdrawal is determined by Student Life during the Exit Interview.
How to Change Your Meal Plan Meal plan changes are allowed until the second Friday of the fall and spring semesters. You may elect to change your meal plan through the Student Life portal in myRedlands where you selected initially or by visiting the Student Life Office by Friday, September 22, 2017 for Fall semester and Friday, January 19, 2018 for Spring semester.
Special Diets We’ll be happy to work with any student whose physician requests special dietary consideration. Just make arrangements through the Student Development Center on the west side of the library (909-948-8069) or Student Health Center behind the Memorial Chapel (909-748-8021) and a manager will meet with you to discuss your needs. Vegan, vegetarian, and made-without-gluten options will be available at each meal.
ON CAMPUS DININGLOCAL DININGAll meals for residential and commuter students are free to new students during the Orientation period, ending with dinner on Sunday September 3. Starting Monday, September 4, University meal plans begin. Use your student ID card to gain access to the Irvine Commons.
