Letter from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Hamiltondear oxonians and friends:

Greetings from Oxford! On behalf of my colleagues throughout the Collegiate University, I am delighted to extend this invitation for you to join us at the 2012 North American Reunion.

In 2010, the leadership of the Bodleian Library arranged for Magna Carta to be on display at the Reunion. Bringing this iconic document to New York generated a great deal of enthusiasm among the Reunion attendees

and, I believe, was a wonderful way of celebrating the historic and philosophical links that bind Oxford to North America.

This year, I am very pleased to report that our colleagues at the Ashmolean Museum have agreed to send a dozen extraordinary items to the Reunion. These amazing pieces – ranging from drawings by Michelangelo and Raphael to ancient Greek and Roman coins – will help to illustrate the great depth and breadth of the Museum’s unrivalled collections. Since several curators from the Ashmolean will accompany these items to New York and will be on hand to describe them in great detail, we will all be able to experience how the Museum utilizes these exquisite items as teaching tools.

As you may know, the Ashmolean has undergone a major renovation. In its first year since the newly-expanded building was reopened, the Museum

attracted over 1.2 million visitors. To help put that number in perspective, that is more than the number of people who went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston or the Philadelphia Museum of Art last year! This great success is a testament to the continued outstanding leadership provided by the Director of the Ashmolean, Dr. Christopher Brown.

The 2012 Reunion will also feature a celebration of the founding of the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford. While it is fair to say that Oxford has produced more world leaders than any other university on the planet, the expertise linked to government was scattered throughout Oxford. Thanks to a magnificent benefaction by the New York-based financier Len Blavatnik, Oxford will now be able to harness, direct, and amplify its work in this important field.

Of course, no Reunion would be complete without lectures and presentations by outstanding members of the University. This year, topics ranging from diabetes, to genetics, to business will be part of the featured presentations.

Finally, I should note that representatives of the University’s Office of Career Services will be with us throughout the weekend. Whether you need to learn how best to update your résumé or network with Oxonians in your chosen field, our colleagues from Career Services will be on hand to help.

the Genetic revolution 11:45 am – 12:45 pm • 3rd FloorPeter Donnelly (Balliol College, 1980), Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, Professor of Statistical Science, and Fellow of St Anne’s at the University of Oxford, will discuss how genetic factors are responsible for a substantial part of the susceptibility to all of the common diseases afflicting humans, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and many cancers and infectious diseases. The talk, aimed at a general audience, will give a sense of the exciting advances in genomic science, and the opportunities and challenges they create for our health and society.

Black Holes & Spin Offs11:45 am – 12:45 pm • 3rd Floor Katherine Blundell, Professor of Astrophysics at Oxford and research Fellow at St John’s College, will shed a different light on the popular notion that black holes “suck in everything from its surroundings,” and discuss how they actually give rise to many remarkable phenomena such as extragalactic quasars and microquasars in our own galaxy. She will illustrate how matter can be spun off near black holes in the form of winds and jets that spread through their surroundings, resulting in black holes having tremendous cosmic influence many light years beyond their event horizons.

Changing the Game2:15 pm – 3:15 pm • 3rd FloorA panel of Saïd Business School’s faculty and distinguished graduates will discuss the role and purpose of business education in light of critical challenges including the financial crisis, environmental threat, and the shifting balance of economic power. They will recount their own attempts to change the rules of the game through innovation, and the challenges they’ve faced. The Dean of Saïd Business School, Peter Tufano, will chair the discussion, and Stephan Chambers, Director of the MBA program, will join the panel.

From Molecule to Malady: New research and New therapies for Neonatal diabetes 2:15 pm – 3:15 pm • 3rd Floor Professor Frances Ashcroft, royal Society GlaxoSmithKline research Professor at the University laboratory of Physiology, Oxford and Fellow of Trinity College, describes her groundbreaking work on insulin secretion and diabetes and discusses how it has led to a new treatment for children born with a rare inherited type of diabetes.

the ashmolean: the World’s Finest university Museum3:45 pm – 4:45 pm • Grand Ballroom, 3rd FloorThis panel will discuss the Ashmolean treasures on display at the reunion and how these relate to the Museum’s wider collections in Oxford. The curators will also discuss what application these collections have in cross-disciplinary teaching at Oxford, and examine more widely the role of today’s university museums. Dr. Christopher Brown CBe, Director, Ashmolean Museum; Mr. Henry Kim, Mellon Project Director, Ashmolean Museum; and Professor Shearer West, Head of the Humanities Division at the University of Oxford, will join the conversation.

The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford is the world’s first public museum, founded in 1683. Today, as a department of the University of

Oxford, and with world-class collections, it is widely regarded as one of the finest university museums in the world. The Ashmolean unveiled a dramatic physical transformation of its building, to a design by architect Rick Mather, in November 2009. It houses 39 new galleries, including new special exhibition galleries, a dedicated Education Centre, state-of-the-art conservation studios, and Oxford’s first roof-top restaurant. Although completely invisible behind Charles Cockerell’s neo-classical facade, the Rick Mather building has provided the Museum with 100% more display space and the facilities to launch a major exhibitions program. In its first year, the museum received over 1.2 million visitors and is now the most popular free visitor attraction in England outside London.

The 2012 North American Reunion will feature treasures from the Ashmolean Museum including ancient coins and works by Michelangelo and Raphael. Attendees of the Reunion will be able to view (and in some cases handle) these works with curators from the Museum on hand.

Limited viewings of the Ashmolean pieces will be offered on Saturday 14 April at the Waldorf=Astoria. There will also be an open viewing at 5:00 pm. Tickets required (excludes open viewing). Please find details on the included registration form.
