Design Principle 1
LINE
Objectives To comprehend how important a role Line plays in the creative process. To understand how Line affects a work of art. To appreciate how Line expresses feelings and emotions. To recognize how Line can communicate symbolic meanings. To value how products convey the intended image.
Learning Outcomes The theme being created is uniformity in fashion and nature around us through lines. Bold horizontal and vertical lines can be found in clothing and nature, for example the
vertical rows in flower bed look almost as if they are disappearing into the scenery. Vertical lines can direct a persons attention to a vanishing point or pull the attention to
another individual. Lines can create a pattern when used repeatedly, along with varying the size and
weight like horizontal stripes used on a blouse or a summer dress.

Design Principle 2
SPACE
Objectives To comprehend how important a role Space plays in the creative process. To understand how Space affects a work of art. To appreciate how Space expresses feelings and emotions. To recognize how Space can communicate symbolic meanings. To value how products convey and intended image.
Learning Outcomes The theme being created is uniformity with heels to create an escalating formal usage
of space. The heels placed in an escalating fashion create the feeling that they are vanishing into
thin air. The heels also create an symbolic image similar to a marching line waking down the
street in a uniform line. The heels are varying in size and also decrease in size in order to create the vanishing
feeling.

Design Principle 3
SHAPE & FORMObjectives To recognize how shape and form can communicate symbolic meaning. To value how products convey the intended shape and form. To create the intended shape and form. To capture an attractive impression through aesthetic experience.
Learning Outcomes The theme being create is geometric uniformity in fashion through the shape and form
of garments The use of physical shapes like, squares and rectangles creates the feeling of shape. Boldly shaped garments can create different feeling of form. Form and shape are all around us whether it be natural, geometric, abstract, or
nonobjective.

TEXTURE
Objectives To identify the importance of using various textures in promoting one overall image or
mood. To discover new and upcoming texture trends in the fashion industry. To comprehend how textures convey expressive and symbolic qualities. To understand the difference between tactile and visual texture.
Learning Outcomes The trend is metal detailing on garments. Target market is trendy, fashionable young adult females. The trend would be successful because it has caught on with many designers and over
time it has reappeared on fashion runways. The source of texture is all metal in silver, gold, and gun metal. The metal detailing are smooth, shiny, and sometimes dull but can give a rough edgy
appearance to a garment. When metal detailing is used vastly on a garment it can be placed in a way that created
a geometric pattern. The metal detailing adds an edgy urban/punk feel to any garment.

Design Element 5
Color Analysis
Objectives To discern color range, intensity, scheme, and composition of a work of art. To develop a color palette based on a specific inspirational piece. To understand the various color relationships. To understand the emotions tied to various colors. To identify examples of color relationships in fashion that elicit the feeling s and
emotions discussed for each color.
Learning Outcomes The depicted color relationship is double complementary, using red, green. Turquoise,
and fuchsia. The inspiration picture is by Carlos Don Juan entitled “Virgen”, which delivers a bright
twist on the Virgin Mary’s clothing, creating a modern feel. the new color forecast uses heat, lime, ice mint, and pink berry. Each piece displayed in the layout represents the ice mint and pink berry tones. A
skirt from designer Marni is rich in color and has a fun but yet classy look.

Emphasis
& Keep the
Balance the Rhythm
Design Principle 6
Balance, Rhythm & Emphasis
Objectives To identify the important relationship between Balance, Rhythm and Emphasis. To understand the variety of Balance, for example, symmetrical, asymmetrical,
horizontal, vertical and radial balance. To understand the types of Rhythm, for example, metric, flowing, swirling and climatic
rhythm. To understand how Emphasis can be achieved by color, light, shape, and created by
contrast, isolation and placement.
Learning Outcomes Balance , rhythm , and emphasis are the three most vital and dynamic principles of any
design. There are two kinds of balance, visual balance which relates to perception and the
emotional concept of stability. The second type of balance is structural balance which relates to the construction of objects.
There are four types of rhythm: metric, flowing, swirling, and climatic. Emphasis is the point that the eye focuses on when looking at an object, for example
padding in shoulders to emphasize the shoulders on a blazers.

Design Principle 7
Unity & Variety
Objectives To recognize how Variety can be achieved though contrast of the design elements. To recognize how Variety can be achieved though contrast of the design elements. To comprehend how Unity and Variety are displayed in apparel. To create the intended Unity and Variety to capture an attractive impression though
aesthetic experience.
Learning Outcomes Unity can be achieved through color, for example an outfit can use colors to achieve a
harmonious whole. Variety can make a design or outfit interesting through contrast and structure. Unity and variety rely on one another to create a balanced composition while at the
same time making it interesting. Unity and variety is key when creating the perfect look.

SCALING UP TO PERFECT PROPORTIONS
Design Principle 8
Proportion & Scale
Objectives To recognize the Proportion is the size relationship of parts within a whole. To recognize the Scale is the size relationship to an outside unit of measurement. To comprehend how Proportion and Scale are displayed in apparel. To create the intended Proportion and Scale to capture an attractive impression
through aesthetic experience.
Learning Outcomes The design principle being utilized in the creative image is the “Golden Mean, which
are ideal proportions. Proportion and Scale are very different from each other but both relate to size. Proportion relates to parts within a whole, for example the human body. Scale is measured according to an outside unit of measurement for example, cities,
people, and buildings.
