Open House & Project Showcase Thank You Thanks goes to the clubs, volunteers, members and families that came out to the Cecil County 4-H Open House and Project Showcase on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at the University of Maryland Extension, Cecil County 4-H Office. Over 50 people participated and/or attended.

State 4-H Horticulture Judging Team & Demonstrator Results Congratulations to Mason Darsney, William Donnelley and Abby Shortall who were a members of the Maryland 4-H Horticulture Judging Team and Brayden Madron who was selected to present his 4-H Demonstration at the National Junior Horticulture Association Convention. They traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska for the 2019 NJHA conference and contests from October 11-14, 2019. Maryland's 4-H Horticulture Judging Team won First Place Team overall and William placed 3rd, Abby 4th, and Mason placed 9th overall. Brayden was selected as the Grand National Award winner. State 4-H Shotgun Contest Results On October 26, 2019, fifteen members of the Young Guns 4-H club participated in the State 4-H Shotgun competition held at the Prince George’s County Trap and Skeet Center in Glenndale. In the junior division: Kasey Mackey placed 1st in trap, 1st in skeet and 1st overall. In the intermediate division: Kasey Mackey placed 8th overall, Rebecca Taylor 14th overall, Jacob Livingston 16th overall and Ben Hollis 18th overall. In the senior division: Noah Cage placed 3rd in skeet, 3rd in sporting clays and 2nd overall; Hunter Clark placed 2nd in trap and 4th overall; Gavin LaSala placed 11th overall; Brian Templin placed 14th overall; Holly Mahala placed 17th overall; Easton Hendrickson placed 20th overall; Heather Mullins placed 3rd in trap and 24th overall; Andrew Dvorak placed 27th overall; Sam Reyburn placed 28th overall and McKenzie Hendrickson placed 31st overall. Thanks goes to the Cecil volunteers who served as the 4-H shotgun instructors for the Cecil County group.

Maryland 4-H State Council Opportunity The Maryland 4-H State Council is the premier 4-H leadership opportunity in Maryland. Are you 13-18 years old (4-H age) in 2020 and passionate about growing the Maryland 4-H Program? Join the State Council! Applications for 2020 are due by November 15th. Cecil County 4-H Reenrollments & New Member Enrollments for 2020 New member enrollments & reenrollments for the 2020 project year will start in early January when the State rolls over the 4-H online system. Again all enrollments must take place online in 2020. Volunteers will also be reenrolling thru 4-H online in 2020. An e-mail with details how to reenroll will be sent to all current volunteers and youth members explaining the process. If you are new to 4-H this fall, wait to enroll until January 2020 as youth are welcome to participate in all the club and county activities.

Out of State Trip Opportunities for Members 4-H Ages 14-18

As Cecil County 4-H senior aged members (14-18 as of 1/1/20), youth are eligible to apply for four Out of State 4-H Trips. These trips include National 4-H Congress, West Virginia Older Members Conference, Camp Miniwanca and Virginia 4-H Conference. National 4-H Congress is a once in a lifetime experience, where youth from all across the nation get together to address the needs and issues of youth, listen to motivational speakers and socialize with fellow 4-Hers. Congress takes place at the end of November. West Virginia Older 4-H Members Conference is a Leadership Development Conference that occurs at the end of June in Jackson’s Mill, West Virginia. Camp Miniwanca is a leadership conference that occurs in June in Shelby, Michigan. Virginia 4-H Conference takes place in June in Virginia and is a 4-H leadership development program. Applicants must be enrolled in 4-H and not older than 4-H age 18 the year the trip takes place. Youth interested in applying must do a 4-H resume, essay, fill out a trip application and receive an interview. This year’s essay topic is: "Explain how you have developed life skills to help support your pledge to the 4 H’s (head, heart, hands and health) and how they have benefited your own development." Completed applications, essays and resumes are due to the Cecil County Extension Office by January 3, 2020. Youth that are selected to represent Cecil County must be available for an interview. The closest regional interview will be held on February 1, 2020 in Centreville, Maryland. Cecil County 4-H Record Books and Upcoming Worshops

Completing a record book is not something most 4-Hers think of as fun, but it can be one of the most important skills you develop as a 4-H member. Learning to keep good records of the work you do is something that will help you in school and may lead to a successful career, plus more. Record Books are due to the Extension Office by January 24, 2020 by 7:00 p.m. Your 4-H record book must be signed by your club leader prior to submission at the county level, so please make those arrangements well ahead of the due date. Any book submitted

without a leader’s signature will not be accepted. Record books can be either typed or hand written. Forms are available online at our website, http://extension.umd.edu/cecil-county/4-h-youth/record-keeping or in paper form from the Extension Office. PLEASE NOTE: We are only accepting the “Maryland 4-H Summary and Project Record Forms” in 2020. We will be offering several record book workshops on Thursday, November 7, 2019; Thursday, January 2, 2020 and Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 6:30 PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, Elkton. Please RSVP your attendance by noon the day of the workshop to April at [email protected]. If no one RSVP’s, the workshop will be cancelled.

Friends of Cecil County 4-H Benefit Auction Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 7th! We will be holding our annual Cecil County 4-H Benefit

Auction to help raise funds for our club and county 4-H programs. The doors open at 5 PM the Live Auction begins at 6:30 P.M and the silent auction ends at 8 PM. Please note the change in times. Club donations are due by Monday, November 18th. Clubs can contribute to the auction by getting items donated or creating a gift basket. One half of whatever your items earn at the auction will go to your club and the other half will go to fund county 4-H programs which helps to fund achievement night awards, the pizza party and dance, program

insurance and various workshops. Any questions may be answered by contacting April or Vicki at the Extension Office. Please support your local 4-H program! To make this event successful, everyone needs to help. If every club can get items donated for the auction, we will have a great turnout! Garlic Planting Party 4-H parent, Eliza Koehler is offering a garlic planting for interested 4-Hers on Saturday, November 9 at 1 PM at 3 Libby Lane, Elkton. (Right by Wesley’s restaurant) She is planning to do a short talk about the history of garlic, demonstrate how to plant garlic, and get the kids to plant garlic in the field. It's the last chance to get your hands in the dirt before the season is over! 4-H participants would each get a clove (or more) of each type of garlic on hand to take home and plant themselves. If the weather is good enough, she plans to give a discussion/demonstration about my tractor, a BCS walk behind. Participants should bring their own chairs, shoes/boots to wear in the field, water bottles and gloves. On our property we have ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys. We also have house cats just in case anybody is allergic. RSVP your attendance to Eliza by the day prior or if you have any questions email her at [email protected] .

Get to Know 4-H-A Program for New 4-H Families Are you new to the 4-H program and want to learn what 4-H is all about? Come to our “Get to Know 4-H” program that will be held on November 13, 2019 at 6:30 PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, Elkton. Please RSVP your attendance to April at [email protected] by noon the day of the program.

Horticulture Happenings

The 4-H Horticulture group will be meeting on Thursday, November 14th at 6:30 PM at Rosebank Church in Rising Sun. Participants will be working on bulb plantings taught by Dave Shortall. There will be a small fee for supplies. Please contact Ruth Brown at 410-920-7838 to RSVP your attendance by no later than Monday, November 11th. Participants are asked to bring a carrier to take their plantings home.

Countywide 4-H Sewing & Foods Workshops 4-H Volunteer, Joan Gaffney, will be offering another countywide sewing workshop on Sunday, November 17th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the St. Mary Anne’s-Parish Center, 315 South Main Street, North East (Park in front of cemetery wall on street or in Post Office parking lot). RSVP to Joan at 443-553-7492 or [email protected] at least a week before each scheduled class. Classes are limited to 15 kids. In 2020 Joan will be offering foods classes on February 16th and March 15th from 2-4 PM at SMA in North East. Most classes require a small fee.

Creative Clovers Class

All Clovers ages 5-7 as of 1/1/19 are welcome to attend the 4-H Creative Clover sessions on Thursday, November 21st in the Cecil County Extension Office in Elkton from 6:15-7:15 PM.

Cecil County 4-H Horse Bowl Practices

Horse Bowl practices will be held every other Wednesday evening. Practices started on September 25the at 6:45 PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, but it is not too late to join in. Upcoming practices will be held on November 20th, December 4th, and December 18th with weekly practices starting in January. Clovers that will be age 8 as of January 1, 2020 are welcome to join the practices this fall as you don’t have to wait until January to join in. Hands-On Animal Science Classes

We will be offering monthly fun, hands-on Animal Science classes for 4-Hers from 6:30-8:00 PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, Elkton. You do not have to attend all the class topics. Please RSVP online at http://extension.umd.edu/cecil-county/4-h-youth/cecil-county-4-h-hands-animal-science-classes or call 410-996-5280 the day prior to each scheduled class so that enough supplies can be gathered and materials prepared in advance. The dates and topics are as follows:

• Monday, November 25th-Mighty Meat-Come learn about meat and taste a variety of meats • Monday, January 27th-Fiber Fun-Come learn about animal fibers and make a fiber creation

The classes will be fun and energetic as all the sessions will be hands-on.

Cecil County 4-H Robotics Meetings The next Cecil County 4-H Robotics group meeting will be Tuesday, November 26th (tentative) and the December date is TBA. Please contact Vicki Stone at [email protected] to RSVP your interest by November 15th.

Breakfast with Santa & Holiday Craft Workshop

The 4-H Camp counselors and Junior Council members are planning an exciting Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 7, 2019 from 7:45-9:15 AM and Holiday Craft Workshop from 9:30 A.M. until 12:30 PM at the Walls Activity Hall in Fair Hill. There is also a craft class offered for adults. This is a great workshop for having fun with 4-H friends from other clubs and to make holiday crafts at an affordable price. Ownership Deadline for Market-Ready Beef and Dairy Steers for 2020

The County and State ownership deadline is January 1, 2020 for Market Beef and Dairy Steers. We will be tagging and weighing steers on Saturday, January 4th from 9-11 AM at the scales area of the Cecil County Fairgrounds. Steers must be in the individual name of the 4-H member. Cecil County Fair market ready steers must be born after August 1, 2018. Beef and Dairy Steers must be born after January 1, 2019 to be eligible for the Maryland State Fair 4-H participation.

Camp Counselor and Adult Staff Trainings for 2020 Like 4-H Camp? Will you be actual age 15 or older in by August, 2020? Want to help more? If you are interested in being a camp counselor the first training will be Friday evening and Saturday, January 10-11 (as an overnight lock in) Camp is always looking for more adult volunteers, even if it is just to teach a class, or come down for one activity, so please contact us if interested. Please be aware that becoming a camp counselor or adult staff member is a very big responsibility and does require commitment. These are the set dates and are not expected to change. Please mark your calendars now. For the day trainings, you will need to bring $5 for lunch, or bring your lunch with you - there is a kitchen available. Cecil County 4-H Horse Fun Day

4-H Horse Fun Day will be on Monday, January 20, 2020 with check in beginning at 8:30 AM and activities running from 9:00 AM-3:30 PM at the Calvert Grange on Rt. 273 in Calvert (2357 Telegraph Road, Rising Sun, MD 21911). A flyer containing registration information will be included in the next newsletter. Registration will be due by January 15th. This year’s horse educational topics include a variety of horse related educational topics. Participants will also have the opportunity to partake in ice breaker games, the horse hoopla t-shirt design contest, horse games, horse crafts and socialize with other 4-H Horse project members. Pizza, drinks and snacks will be provided.

4-H Volunteer Opportunities Cecil 4-H UME Volunteer Development Series

Volunteers and teen leaders are encouraged to enhance their skills by registering for the Cecil County 4-H Volunteer Development Series sessions. The next class will be:

o 11/18-Volunteer Professional Development-4-H Thrive Model, Essential Elements of Positive Youth & Life Skills Development, 6-7 PM (Includes Dinner)

The programs will take place in the University of Maryland Extension Cecil County 4-H Office at 200 Chesapeake Blvd, Suite 1500, Elkton. State Dairy Cattle, Dog and Horse Advisory Group Opportunities Are you an adult volunteer that is interested in serving on the State dairy cattle, dog or horse advisory group. Participants discuss and evaluate programs, plan upcoming activities and events and share new program ideas and resources that benefit the program. Animal Science Project Updates Webinar for Volunteers

The State 4-H Animal Science Project Updates Webinar for volunteers will take place on Tuesday, December 18th from 6:30-8:30pm via Webex. This session will provide an overview of Animal Science Program policy and event changes/updates for 2019. This session is for Maryland 4-H Volunteers and Fair Volunteers working with 4-H members in the Animal Science program areas. Winterfest Class Ideas and Teaching Opportunities

Attention: Volunteers, Parents and/or Teens. If you would like to teach a one, two or three hour class at Winterfest on Sunday, March 8, 2020 starting at 1 PM and running until 4 PM at Fair Hill, please contact Vicki Stone at [email protected] by no later than Friday, January 3, 2020.

Leaders Corner 4-H Leaders and Volunteers Meetings

The next Cecil County 4-H Leaders and Volunteers meeting will be on Monday, November 18, 2020 at 7 PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, Elkton. Prior to the leaders meeting at 6 PM will be a professional development session. Dinner will be provided for those in attendance. Leaders and volunteer meetings are held quarterly and a representative from each club is encourage to attend.

Educational Books, Videos, Learning Kits, and Materials Available For Loan The Cecil County 4-H Office has some educational videos, learning kits, curriculum and equipment which club leaders can borrow from our office on a variety of topics. Open Fair Board Meeting/Fair Board Opportunities The open Fair Board meeting is scheduled on November14th at 7:00 PM in the Elk Room of the County Administrative Building. This is the meeting to attend if you are interested in serving on the Cecil County Fair Board or have concerns or changes to propose to the Fair Board.
