• The University of Malta traces its origins to the founding of the ‘Collegium Melitense’ by the Jesuits in 1592. The College was raised to University status by Grandmaster Manoel Pinto de Fonseca in 1769.

University of Malta

• The supreme governing bodies of the University are the Council and the Senate. The University is empowered to confer degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level whilst research is carried out in various fields.

• All those in possession of the MATSEC Certificate or equivalent are eligible to enrol.

The University Today

• The University of Malta opens its doors to over 2500 new students annually. There are at present about 9800 students including some 750 foreign/exchange students from 80 different countries following full-time or part-time degree and diploma courses, many of them run on the modular or credit system. About 2300 students graduate each year.

Junior CollegeMATSEC Certificate

• The University is also responsible for the Junior College, a pre-tertiary institution having some 4000 students. The two-year course prepares students for the MATSEC Certificate which gives access to University.

Relaxing at the University of Malta

• It’s not all work and no play at the University of Malta. The Students’ Council, Kunsill Studenti Universitarji is one of the oldest Students’ Unions in Europe. In 2001, it celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Consiglio Permanente Universitario, its forerunner. The Council is affiliated to ESIB - The European Students’ International Bureau.

Relaxing at the University of Malta

Apart from intervening in matters that directly concern students, the Council organises a number of social events. Other Faculty and Student Associations also exist. There is an active Sports Club. An olympic-size swimming pool is available for use as is a well-equipped multi-purpose sports hall.
