Question 4

Read through the question below and write approximately 1000 words (about 4 pages)in response to it.

"I teach Physical Science, not English. It is the language teacher's job to ensure that allthe learners in our school are proficient in English. These teachers are not doing theirjobs and we have to bear the burden of this in our classes!"

The above statement is a common one heard in staff rooms in our multilingual schools. The reality is that many of the learners in English medium schools cannot access thecontent of their subjects because of poor English proficiency. The challenge is obvious, but resolving it does not seem to be the focus of many discussions.

Respond to the above statement by drawing on your understanding of the issues below toprove the point that all teachers are in fact language teachers.

• The importance of language in a diverse society• Teaching across the curriculum and making specific examples to subjects• Language in relation to issues and theories of identity• Additive Bilingualism and the rationale for this policy• Language proficiency and the distinction between BICS and CALP

Ensure that your argument is a critical engagement with the issues, as well as a directresponse to the critique mentioned in the opening statement. Repetition of facts alone willnot be in your interests.

Please watch the word count and make sure that the issues are discussed in anintegrated way by linking them to the question. Also ensure that you have anintroduction and a conclusion.
