Kathy Behrens ’85• Received the Vincent Brown Coffin Award for

honoring professional achievement by a former student-athlete.

• Played tennis and basketball at Hartford.• Currently the Executive Vice President for Social

Responsibility and Player Programs at the NBA.

Erika Messam ’06• A backcourt standout for the Hawks from 2002-06.• Named America East Player of the Year (2005-06)

and three time All-Conference.• Graduated as a member of the 1,000 point club, cur-

rently 11th overall with 1,160 career points.• Among the top-10 in school history in field goal

attempts (9th, 1,016), three point field goals made (9th, 73), free throws made (7th, 247), free throw attempts (10th, 324), free throw percentage (9th, 76.2), assists (4th, 346), steals (4th, 190), games started (3rd, 106), minutes played (6th, 3,307), and minutes average (t-5th, 29.8).

• Helped lead the Hawks to to NCAA Tournament berths and America East Tournament championship (2005, 2006).

Maureen Dijulia ’99• A backcourt standout for the Hawks from 1995-99. A

relentless defender with great court vision.• Stands as the program’s all-time assists leader (605).

Averaged 5.5 APG in her career. • Also among career leaders in steals (203, third) and

free throw percentage (.765, seventh). • Turned in four of the program’s top five single

season assists marks, including a record of 168 in 1998-99.

• Shares the single game record with 14 assists against Maine in 1996.

• Named to the America East Conference All-Rookie team in 1995-96.

• Studied in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Wendy Davies ’87• A two-time captain, was a standout as a forward/

center on the women’s basketball team.• Ended her career second among the program’s all-

time leaders with 892 points and held down the top spot in rebounds with 629 (currently eighth).

• Turned in 82 blocked shots, currently fourth all-time.• One of 15 members of Hartford’s 500-point/500-

rebound club.• Most productive season came in 1983-84 when she

scored 335 points (14.5 PPG) and pulled down 157 rebounds (6.8 RPG).

• Received the ECAC Medal of Merit, given for the combination of athletics and academic excellence, as a senior.

• Studied in the College of Arts and Sciences and was a history major.

Candace Ward ’95, ’97• A guard/forward, stands seventh among all-time

scorers with 1,267 points. Ranks among the pro-gram’s top-10 in numerous categories, including third in assists (354) and first in steals (241).

• Turned in her best season in 1993-94, scoring 453 points and averaging 16.8 ppg (both third highest in a single season). Compiled a season record 83 steals. Named an All-North Atlantic Conference Performer that year. Scored a personal best 31 points against Central Connecticut that same year (fourth best among the program’s single-game performances).

• A two-time captain, led the team to a then season high 15 wins in 1995-96.

• Studied in the College of Arts and Sciences (Bach-elor’s Degree in Criminal Justice) and the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (Master’s Degree in Counseling).

M.J. Besselink ’93• Played center on the women’s basketball team from

1989-93.• Finished career ranked fifth in points scored (1,205)

and second in rebounds (817), currently ranked ninth in points and fourth in rebounds.

• Ended career among all-time leaders in field goals (512) and rebounding average (7.7 rpg), and is cur-rently seventh in blocked shots (65).

• Averaged in double figures in three of four years, including a career-best 14.2 ppg as a senior.

• Pulled down a career high 8.6 rpg as a freshman.• Served as a team captain as a junior and senior.• Graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Heather Weindorfer ’97• A forward, is Hartford women’s basketball’s all-time

most productive player. She is the program’s all-time leading scorer (1,780 points) and third all-time lead-ing rebounder (855).

• In addition to scoring and rebounding, Weindorfer also holds down the top spot in career scoring aver-age (16.3 ppg), free throws (568) and free throws attempted.

• Holds three single season records: scoring average (17.9 in 1996-97), free throws (161 in 1994-95), and free throws attempted (268 in 1994-95).

• Among the America East/North Atlantic Confer-ence’s most prominent players. Was a First Team All-Conference performer in 1995-96.

• Served as a team captain as a junior and senior.

Kathy Burke ’83• A four-year standout for the Hawk women’s basket-

ball program.• Scored 854 points in her Hawks career - which

was the top point total for the first 12 years of the women’s basketball program.

• Also led Hartford as the school’s all-time leading rebounder (535) until the 1987-88 season.

• Set the school record with 23 rebounds against Westfield as a junior.

• A member of Hartford’s 500 rebound club.• Graduated from the University with a Bachelor’s

degree in communications.• Co-founder of “Rise to the Top”, a basketball/life

clinic for young girls.

Hope Kelley ’88• Excelled as a three-sport athlete at Hartford.• A point guard on the women’s basketball team, fin-

ished among the program’s career leaders in steals (121) and assists (219), currently ninth overall.

• Playing a variety of positions, competed on the women’s soccer team during the 1984 season.

• As a golfer was a perennial top-10 finisher in tourna-ment play for the Hawks. Finished among the top seven at the New England Championships for three consecutive years, including fourth in the spring of 1986. Individual medalist at the Yale Invitational in the fall of 1985 and at the Amherst Invitational in the fall of 1986. Led the team to its first New England title in its first year of competition during the spring of 1986 and was captain that year.

• Earned a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University.

• Achieved success as a golfer after graduation. Won the Connecticut Women’s Golf Association Champi-

onship in 1990 and, qualifying as an amateur, played in the U.S. Open in Deluth, Georgia that year. Also won the Endicott Cup in 1990.

• Turned professional in 1991 and has pursued a career as a head golf pro.

Pauline Frisina ’89• Left as the women’s basketball all-time leading scor-

er with 1,374 points, currently stands fourth overall. • Was one of the program’s best pure shooters.• Left as the women’s basketball career leader in field

goals made (612, currently second), field goals at-tempted (1,403, currently first), steals (172, currently seventh) and free throw percentage (.791, currently third). Is also currently third all-time in scoring aver-age (14.2 ppg).

• Best seasons were 1986-87 and 1987-88 with 372 and 357 points, respectively.

• Was named to the Seaboard Conference First-Team as a senior.

• Was a team captain as a senior.

Karen Ringland ’88• The first 1,000 point scorer in women’s basketball

history. Also, the first women’s basketball player to receive an athletic scholarship.

• Appears throughout the Hartford record book. Scored 1,194 career points (currently 10th overall) and pulled down 687 career rebounds (currently sixth overall).

• Left the University among career leaders in field goal percentage (.532, currently second), free throws (226), blocked shots (57, currently t-9th), scoring average (12.7 ppg, currently sixth) and rebounding average (7.3 rpg, currently fifth).

• A proficient field goal shooter, appeared among the nation’s leaders at various points throughout her career.

• Most productive season came in 1986-87. Scored 381 points (15.2 ppg) that year.

• Pulled down 20 rebounds against Assumption in 1984-85, currently tied for the second most re-bounds in a game.

Roger Wickman ’65• Coached women’s basketball, women’s tennis, base-

ball, men’s basketball and cross country.• Named assistant athletic director in 1970, promoted

to associate athletic director in 1979.

Laurie Weinstein ’78• A pioneer for women’s athletics at the University of

Hartford.• Was a captain and starred on the first three varsity

women’s sports offered by the University (bas-ketball, tennis and softball). The only three-sport captain in the history of the University.

• As a basketball forward, was a co-captain and the team’s leading scorer for the first three years of the program’s existence. Her 16.6 ppg and 15.7 ppg scor-ing averages in 1976-77 and 1975-76, respectively, are among the top 10 single season scoring averages in program history.

• Scored a then Hartford single game record 34 points vs. Quinnipiac (currently stands as the second best single game)

• As a softball player participated in the first two years of the program’s existence. As a senior co-captain, played first base and hit .287.

• Excelled academically, twice winning the Allan Wil-son Scholar-Athlete Award.

• Earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the College of Arts and Sciences.
