LEROY HEITZ

I am writing a short e-book on my father’s exploits in the Pacific during World War

II. This project has involved digitizing and restoring old photographs my father had

taken during his time in the Pacific and extensive research into the activities of the

units in which he served. He was in Fiji, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, New Georgia,

and the Philippines, but never on Guam. This project was mostly for family document-

tation and turned out to be interesting, enjoyable, and very much a learning experience

for me. Learning to format an e-book turned out to be quite a challenging task.

RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

DONALD E. (GENE) BRUCE

1. During the summer of 2011, my wife and I spent a month touring Central Europe

and a part of Russia. We ended our trip in St. Petersburg, where we spent time in The

Hermitage, Russia’s national art gallery. We have found that such experiences add to

the credibility we have as members of the Academy of Lifelong Learning at Lone Star

College, Montgomery, and among a Great Decisions group which gathers monthly to

discuss foreign polity. It is not uncommon for us to be recognized for the experiences

we have accumulated while living in exotic Guam and traveling extensively abroad.

2. I continue to participate in seminars and classes for senior citizens at the local

community college. I try to remain informed and involved in current political and

world news and activities, encouraged to do so by these classes which offer many

opportunities for exploration of new ideas, as well as challenges to contribute to

everyone’s intellectual well-being.

LEROY HEITZ

1. I was part of a research team on a project funded by The US Geological Survey.

This project developed a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the water supply

system for the Island of Saipan. In August 2011, I visited Saipan, along with Dr.

Khosrowpanah of WERI, to install GIS software and provide training to our Saipan

counterparts at the Commonwealth Utility Corporation.

2. I was co-investigator with Dr. Khosrowpanah of WERI on a research project

funded by The US Geological Survey in which we evaluated the hydroelectric

potential of various streams on the island of Kosrae. In August 2011, I made a field

trip to Kosrae to verify the stream gage locations that were used in the study. I

submitted a draft technical completion report for this project to WERI for publication.

That publication is presently in press.

3. I am co-investigator with Dr. Khosrowpanah of WERI, University of Guam on a

proposal being submitted for funding by the US Geological Survey. This project will

develop a computerize water system model for the Island of Weno in Chuuk State,

FSM. This project will also involve the development of a GIS database of the water

system components.

4. I have developed three iPhone/iPad applications for determining energy losses in

water system piping systems. These Applications should be available on the Apple

on-line store soon.

LOURDES P. KLITZKIE

1. Continued to gather data for the historical perspective of the University of Guam

from 1952-1960. I interviewed former students from Ohio State University.

2. Presented a paper entitled, “Educating Disabled Populations: From Isolation,

Segregation and Mainstreaming to Full Inclusion, A Historical Perspective”, at the

Twelfth Biennial Conference of Special Education in Windhoek, Namibia July 11,

2011.

Continued association with the University of Arizona as a Senior Research Scientist in

the Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science via research in the fields of

halophyte physiology and aquaculture. Recent work has focused on the development

of systems for producing agricultural crops under saline irrigation.

1. For the past six years, I’ve worked as an election clerk or judge in local elections.

Responsibilities include: procedures training, adherence to state and Federal laws, and

to assure the integrity of elections. As part of a team which has been together for

several years we are recognized for our efficiency and skill.

2. For the past three years, I’ve served as a Stephen Minister in my local church.

Stephen Ministers are essentially grief counselors. Preparing for this responsibility

required a year of training. In the summer of 2012, I will receive Leadership training,

Still serving the community as a Civil Air Patrol squadron staff officer and

flight crew member. I turned 84 last year, but remain healthy enough to have run the

5K at Indiana University's Mini Marathon/5K event last year and recover sufficiently

My activities for the year 2011 again focused on docent activities at the Honolulu

Academy of Arts. For the eighth year in a row, I led more than 50 tours covering a

in various service activities for the Docent Council.

Involved with several non-profit, music groups: 1) the Rhythm Gang, a music

organization supporting the performance of big-band music of the swing era; 2) the Old

Arizona Brass Band, a group that recreates the military and civilian bands that performed

throughout Arizona during the period 1872 to 1912; and 3) the Old Pueblo Brass Band, a

community-based, British-style brass band. I also regularly play trumpet or guitar in a

variety of other ensembles.

1. Along with my wife, Dr. Cynthia Sajnovsky, continued 18th

year of co-hosting,

“Airing the Arts”, a weekly 30 minute program for KPRG, Guam’s Public Radio

Station. We interview local artists and discuss current arts events in which they are

engaged; and I prepare a weekly calendar of current arts events happening on Guam

which is aired several times weekly and is also published on the KPRG website.

2. Continued volunteer work as a Coast Guard Auxiliarist by serving the 14 Coast

Guard District (Hawaiian Islands, Guam and Saipan) as the District Staff Officer

for Public Education, and the Guam Flotilla as Flotilla Operations Officer and

Navigational Systems Officer. Duties include: 1. as District Public Education Officer:

to monitor, encourage, and provide materials for and otherwise support the Coast

Guard Auxiliary’s Public Education Program in Boating Safety in District 14; 2. as

Flotilla Operations Officer: organizing boats and crew for Group Guam search and

rescue exercises, regatta, safety and training patrols, and preparing calendar of on-

water patrols for distribution to interested parties; 3. as Navigational Systems Officer:

routinely observing the state of Aids to Navigation around Guam and reporting

deteriorating, obscured or missing buoys and other navigation marks to appropriate

Coast Guard personnel. Was elected Division 02 Commander, responsible for

Auxiliary activities on Guam and Saipan. In addition, I participated in the following

activities for the C.G. Auxiliary:

a. Member/Public Training: Taught a 12 lesson Boating Safety course to

members of the National Park Service on Guam. Taught Team Co-ordination

Training courses in operational risk management to members of the Coast

Guard Auxiliary and members of the Active Duty Coast Guard. Assisted in

presenting Boating Safety courses to members of Guam’s Port Authority.

b. Public Affairs: Appeared on KGUM radio’s, Afternoon Show, promoting

safe boating practices - May 21. Participated in NSBW Proclamation signing

May 21.

c. Training: Attended a five day course in St. Louis, MO to prepare for

qualification as an Operational Risk Management Instructor for the Coast

Guard.

3. Completed a Ryukyu name bookmark project (with a co-project leader) to serve as

an educational tool and a fund-raising product. The bookmark design has the family

name in kanji as well as historical name pronunciations from the Ryukyu era and

changes which occurred when Japan came into power including pronunciations

common to Hawaii immigrants but not necessarily the same as in Okinawa today. The

work on this project was as a member of the Okinawan Genealogy Society of Hawaii.

4. Continue to serve as volunteer for First Aid Station during the 4-day Children’s

Camp in June and during the Fall Craft Fair for the Hawaii United Okinawa

Association.

Hello Bob, Got your memo about reporting professional activities for the past year.

Since I have none to report, the format isn't crucial for this. I would like to be

reporting many interesting and possibly important activities, but my time and efforts

seem to have been Shanghaied by health issues which I won't go into as they are not

interesting, even to me.

Anyway, I wish you and Cynthia and all my former colleagues at UOG the best of

the best for 2012. I hope the University continues to flourish and that it remains a

force for positive change in the lives of the people of Guam and the Western Pacific.

Thanks for keeping me informed of activities of the Emeriti, and please tell Cathleen

Moore-Linn that I think she is doing an outstanding job of keeping the world informed

of what's going on at UOG. Thanks again for all you do and have done to make life

Our annual report is of a more personal nature than scholarly.

Health issues and a need to be proactive rather than have to act in a panic in the future

has prompted us to sell our home and fine a nice Independent Living/Assisted Living

facility as our next adventure. Russ felt he will probably stop driving in the near future

and trying to live in our current home without driving just doesn’t work. We have

been very fortunate in finding our new home, a two bedroom apartment with

restaurant dinning, lots of captivities and a very liberal transportation perk. We are

really pleased.

Now we are in the process of packing up all our belongings, deciding which to keep

and which to go to family and which to give away. After 62 years of marriage we have

accumulated so much “stuff”. Some of my things include wedding gifts of my

grandmother (1892). So far Russ and I have been able to do all our own packing. We

decided our Valentine gift to each other today would be to not pack!

Our best wishes to everyone. I truly miss you all. Our best wishes to the University of

Guam during this wonderful anniversary year.
