Brief Intro•  General plan in the US is to set up multiple APA factories to

produce 150 APAs (enough for a 10kt DUNE module)-  ½ the first module and ½ the second module

-  with the other halves produced here in the UK

•  PSL, Chicago, Yale -  PSL is, of course, already a working assembly line

-  I’ll talk about UChicago as a possible site for additional assembly lines and the next talk will introduce Yale

•  In this talk-  Photo tour of campus facilities

-  A look at possible layouts of APA assembly lines

-  Example of a past project and summary of local resources

APA Factory Layout Option #2•  Modify the existing interior space to

be a “wiring lab”

•  Extend length of lab and add a high, wide door exiting to high bay

•  Clear advantages to working in this climate controlled, clean, well-lit space

•  Leaves open high bay area just outside lab dedicated to shipping, receiving and prepping frames for wiring

Double Chooz Construction @ Chicago•  Double Chooz muon tracking system was

constructed in these same spaces @ UC-  3 year construction project from 2008-2010.

-  Built 130 4m x 1.6m scintillator strip modules now in use at DC, ICARUS, and ProtoDUNE.

-  Project team: 1 faculty + 2 PDs + full-time technician + supporting engineer + ~6 undergraduates at any given time (30+ students throughout the project)

More Details on Local Resources•  University of Chicago campus is 45 miles from Fermilab and 25

miles from Argonne National Lab

•  Construction area is right on campus, adjacent to HEP group offices (faculty, postdocs, students)

•  Full machine shop connected to high bay; also many professional machining companies in Chicago area

•  Electrical shop connected to high bay mezzanine

•  Several smaller side and local labs for test or prep work

•  Strong mechanical engineering team (working closely now with PSL, experience designing SBND APAs)

•  Lots of undergraduate students looking for research related work
