FOREWORD Postgraduate programmes at the University
of Cape Town play a vital role in
developing skills necessary for success in a knowledge-driven economy, both locally
and internationally. Our postgraduate
programmes span the basic disciplines as well as a range of applied and professional
areas in Commerce, Engineering and the
Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law and Science. Our
commitment to being a high quality
research intensive university means that our postgraduate students have the opportunity
to work with academics who are making
important contributions to new knowledge via their on-going research and professional
activities.
This booklet provides information on
potential sources of financial support for postgraduate students. There are various
categories of financial assistance
administered by the University and many other agencies and donors. This booklet
also provides information on a range of
postdoctoral fellowships. The opportunity of a postdoctoral fellowship, following the
successful completion of a doctoral degree,
is a useful career experience allowing a researcher to develop further skills in
knowledge creation and dissemination.
We hope that this booklet will be a useful
resource in identifying potential bursaries and scholarships. We wish you a successful
and enjoyable postgraduate and
postdoctoral experience at the University of Cape Town.
PLEASE NOTE This booklet guides students who will
register for Honours, Master’s or Doctoral study and who require financial assistance,
and for Doctoral graduates seeking
financial support for postdoctoral research. It consists of various sections which are
sub-divided as described under the contents
section on page 3.
Each section of the booklet includes a brief
introduction to the category of awards and describes the discipline (if applicable),
eligibility and conditions, and address for
submission.
The scholarships and bursaries listed in this
version of the booklet will open for application for the 2020 academic year
with various stated deadlines, unless
otherwise specified. In the majority of cases interested students must apply for
postgraduate funding support preceding the
year of study for registration toward their postgraduate Honours, Master’s or
Doctoral degree (e.g. applicants should
apply by the deadlines in 2020, for 2021).
The financing of postgraduate study
invariably takes the form of a combination of scholarships or bursaries, part-time
employment within or outside the
university, student loans (personal – not NSFAS), personal savings and assistance
from families. Note that in certain cases
awards may be held concurrently, in others, not. Concurrency rules are detailed where
relevant.
Funding administered by the UCT
Postgraduate Funding office (PGFO) aims to provide financial support to Honours,
Master’s and Doctoral students through a
variety of awards administered, depending on eligibility and appropriate, timely
application. Please contact the PGFO if
you’re unsure about any aspects of postgraduate funding, such as how to
apply, or the holding of particular awards
concurrently etc.
Students who wish to apply for this funding
should submit a completed 10A (General Awards) application form, or in some
specific cases (e.g. for international
students and certain independent awards), alternative or additional specific
application forms, with all the supporting
documentation by the advertised deadlines. It is vital that applicants understand the
principle that they are only considered for
postgraduate funding awards that they apply for – i.e. there is no automatic
consideration for any awards without
appropriate application.
The 10A form is a general application
through which South African and
Permanent resident postgraduate Honours,
Master’s and Doctoral applicants apply for funding. An applicant has the option via
form 10A to be considered for merit-only,
need-only funding, or, a combination of the two categories. The deadline for 10A
applications is usually October 31, but
students should check deadlines on the Postgraduate Student Funding Page
http://www.students.uct.ac.za/students/fees
-funding/postgraduate-degree-funding .
South African students who qualify for
financial need, using the same criteria as used for undergraduate funding, will, on
application and review, receive funding
that covers their approximate full cost of attendance. Priority for financial need
funding will be given to black South
African students in the first instance. South African students who do not qualify for
financial need, but do meet minimum merit
criteria, are eligible for partial funding.
Most awards offered by the university are
limited to South African citizens and permanent residents. However,
International and Refugee Students may
apply for the International and Refugee Scholarships, departmental scholarships as
described in Sections 4C, 4D and 4E
respectively, external independent scholarships (see Section 5), the NRF in
certain cases, as well as the UCT
Conference Travel grants and the Scholarships for International Travel.
The University administered awards
appearing in this booklet are not available
for the 4th or later year of Bachelor
degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and
Certificates, and most professional degrees such as the FAPM, or any other university-
designated part-time programme, the PGCE
or the LLB and BArch degrees. Students wishing to register for these courses must,
where applicable, refer to booklet 13
"Financial Assistance for Undergraduate Study" issued by the Undergraduate
Student Financial Aid office. Students in
the PGDip (Accounting), PGDip (Music Performance) and various PGCE
programmes may be funded through the
Student Financial Aid office.
The content of this booklet is updated
annually and is available on the Postgraduate Funding Office website. http://www.students.uct.ac.za/students/fees-
funding/postgraduate-degree-funding
Additionally, the booklet is also available in
hardcopy from the PG Funding Office.
Please read through the information
carefully to familiarise yourself with the funding opportunities offered through the
University as well as those offered via
private and third-party organisations.
Students are encouraged to visit the
Postgraduate Funding Office on Upper Campus should they need further assistance
with the application forms and
requirements.
The Postgraduate Funding Office extend
their best wishes for success in your studies.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION • Prospective students should submit UCT funding applications on or (preferably) before the stated
deadlines in addition to having applied for admission to study at UCT. You do not have to
wait to be accepted for an academic place, but you do have to have applied for such.
• Note that closing dates for some awards are early in the year preceding the year for which you require funding. For example, the National Research Foundation (NRF) Master’s and Doctoral
applications for study in 2021 will close early in June 2020.
• While some full cost awards are available (as outlined in the Foreword) students are encouraged as
a matter of principle, where applicable and eligible, to apply for further or alternative funding
such as the NRF.
• In some cases, application from alternative sources is a requirement. For example, in order to meet
the demand for merit awards, students who qualify for UCT merit scholarships are required to have applied for both a UCT merit award and an NRF award. The same rule applies in the case of
students applying for UCT needs-based funding.
• Many awards are renewable, but for a stipulated period of tenure, and dependent on satisfactory
progress being maintained. In most of the cases tenure for Hons, Master’s and Doctoral funding is
one, two and three years, respectively.
• There is no guarantee that an applicant will receive funding on application (i.e. resources are
limited) and some categories of award are oversubscribed and hence, competitive.
• UCT cannot consider assistance for the cost of dependents – funding is considered as an award to
the individual students’ tuition and living costs.
• UCT awards and most external awards cannot be used for student fee debt relief, other than in
certain exceptional cases.
• Appeals may be considered through an appeal process in exceptional circumstances, provided the
appeal is in writing (form available from the PGFO) and there is strong motivation. Legitimate
reasons for postgraduate students to appeal must be fully motivated and include: Changed financial circumstances; Extension of funding tenure; Request to hold funds that exceed maximum
award limit; Deferral of award; Change to programme of study; Late applications with legitimate
documented reasons (such as medical reasons).
.
Application for Admission to Study
and Registration Applicants for financial assistance who are not already registered for the degree of
their choice are reminded that they must
also apply for admission to the University https://applyonline.uct.ac.za/ and should
consult UCT’s Admissions Office or
relevant Faculty Office for the closing dates. Funding selection committees will
only consider candidates who have applied
to UCT for admission. Bear in mind that successful applicants can only claim their
bursaries/scholarships once they have been
accepted and registered in the relevant academic department for the
course/programme for which they applied.
AN OFFER OF A FUNDING AWARD DOES NOT IMPLY AN OFFER OF AN
ACADEMIC PLACE TO STUDY.
Funding and academic admissions are two separate, delinked processes.
Applying for Funding There are multiple sources of funding from which postgraduate awards are established.
These awards are administered by UCT’s
Postgraduate Funding Office (PGFO). Generally, students apply and are assessed
for these on the basis of needs only, merit-
only, or merit-needs categories.
Applicants applying via the form 10A do
not have to be in the first year of their degree. They can apply for second year
support without having been awarded in the
first year. In this case the award will only be once for their Master’s and two years
(subject to satisfactory progress) for their
Doctoral degree.
It is important that students and prospective postdoctoral research fellows applying for
funding comply with the requirements and
submit applications on time and by the specific closing date. As indicated above
some scholarships and bursaries require the
use of an (independent) application form
therefore, students should familiarise
themselves with the application
requirements before applying. Late and incomplete applications will be disqualified
Merit Awards The major source of merit-based awards is
the state-funded Research Council – the
National Research Foundation (NRF) (see Section 1). Students wishing to be
considered for UCT merit awards must
apply, in the first instance, to the NRF.
It is University policy that Honours or
Master’s students who qualify for an NRF scholarship, may not hold a UCT merit
award concurrently. However, Doctoral
students are allowed to hold UCT Merit awards and NRF scholarships concurrently.
UCT also awards scholarships each December to graduating students who have
performed exceptionally well at UCT.
Recipients are identified by the university and an application form for this category of
award is not required. (See Section 8.)
Other scholarships and bursaries such as the
so-called ‘Prestigious fellowships’ funded
from a variety of sources are available. (See Section 3). Other scholarships may be
awarded by Heads of Departments or
supervisors to students working on specific projects or programmes. Candidates should
enquire as to the availability of such awards
by consulting their Supervisors, Course convenors or Heads of academic
departments.
Financial Need Awards The University has instituted a policy to
support South African and Permanent
resident Honours, Master’s and Doctoral students who qualify and have applied for
financial need. Such applicants may qualify
for either full financial aid including an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) or, a
partial award which is a percentage bursary
toward the approved tuition fees.
UCT will determine an applicant’s financial
need by applying the National Means Test (NMT) used by the National Student
Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
The value of a Financial-need bursary will
be calculated on “assessed need” for the cost of university attendance in 2020 and will be
reduced pro rata taking into account other
scholarships and bursaries awarded to students.
Prospective Honours, Master’s and Doctoral postgraduate students who are financially
needy are required to complete the relevant
section of UCT’s Postgraduate Financial Assistance Form 10A to provide the required
supporting documentation. Such students will
be means-tested, and where the means-test is met, a combination of bursaries may be
offered.
Honours, Master’s and Doctoral South
African and Permanent resident students
who fall outside of the above may qualify for partial funding support via the relevant
application form. The same financial
eligibility criteria will be applied for such applicants as indicated above.
Section 5 lists awards administered independently of UCT and enquiries should
be directed to the Administrators/Trustees
indicated.
AS A PRINCIPAL EVERY EFFORT MUST BE MADE TO SECURE
ASSISTANCE FROM SOURCES
EXTERNAL TO UCT WHEREVER POSSIBLE (E.G. FROM THE NRF) AS
UCT CANNOT INDEPENDENTLY
FUND ALL POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS TO OPTIMAL LEVELS.
International and Refugee Students A limited number of scholarships are available to non-South African graduates
who are residents of countries other than
South Africa. These are awarded on a competitive basis with emphasis given to
academic merit and to the seniority of
candidates.
The scholarships do not provide full-cost
support. All UCT International and Refugee Students Scholarships are
supplementary. Prospective postgraduate
students must ensure that they have sufficient financial support for their studies.
The scholarships are renewable for the
duration of the course of study subject to satisfactory progress being maintained, up
to a limit of 1 year at Honours level; for the
1st and 2nd years of Master’s study, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of Doctoral
study. Applications for funding cannot be
processed unless applicants apply for admission through the UCT Admissions
Office or the Faculty Office.
Awards for Study at Overseas
Universities UCT does not offer scholarships for
international study from their central budget. However, certain independent
(external) donor funders do, some requiring
application processing and awarding through the PGFO (see Section 7), others
are administered by the external partner
directly. Various research councils such as the NRF & MRC are potential sources of
assistance for overseas study at the doctoral
degree level. Such overseas awards are made on the basis of academic excellence
and the significance of the proposed study.
Certain overseas universities may offer scholarships or bursaries to international
students or may be in a position to offer part-time employment in the form of
Assistantships or Fellowships, which often
include a waiver of academic fees. Students are advised to check with their intended
institutions.
Section 7 provides information on
independently administered awards for
study at overseas universities.
Scholarships for Short Research
Visits and Conference Grants UCT has made available a number of limited awards to support master’s and
doctoral students to undertake research
visits abroad, and participate in academic conferences. Calls for such awards are
generally made biannually. Again, only
applications made on time and complete in terms of required documentation are
considered by selection committees.
Postdoctoral Research Fellowships This Booklet includes a number of
opportunities for Postdoctoral research
fellowships (See Section 6). However, the majority of opportunities are offered by
independent donors and agencies, and
interested parties are advised to check with
their department Heads and with the PGFO regularly. The office also provides details
of externally administered funding and
other opportunities on an electronic noticeboard which can be found on the
Postdoctoral website.
http://www.uct.ac.za/main/research/postdoc-research-fellowships
The reason Postdoctoral funding is considered a part of the postgraduate
administrative sector is that many of these
awards are administered through the same processes and systems as student awards, in
order to qualify for tax-free status.
GENERAL IMPORTANT
INFORMATION Employment Individuals who are employed full-time (more than 20 hours per week) are not
eligible for UCT postgraduate funding
support.
The regulations governing the NRF/ MRC
bursaries and UCT awards permit some degree of concurrent part-time
employment. Demonstratorships, Teaching
Assistantships or Research Assistantships may be offered by your Department and
details should be obtained from your
supervisor or Head of Department. Subject to limitations on remuneration, award-
holders may undertake part-time
employment, provided weekly duties do not exceed 12 hours if funded via the NRF.
Duration of Scholarship and
Bursary Assistance Research Council bursaries and UCT
awards may be held for:
• the first year of the Honours degree only;
• the 1st and 2nd year of Master’s study,
and
• the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of Doctoral
study.
• Renewal of awards for Master’s and
Doctoral study each year is subject to
satisfactory progress and continued
evidence of need in the case of need-based bursaries, and on the availability of
funds. Students must make every effort to
complete their studies within these
periods.
It is important to note that funding through
the PGFO will not be available beyond the above-mentioned tenures.
Students studying for a second degree at the same level (e.g. Honours Graduate
doing a second Honours Degree) are
ineligible for funding.
Applications for renewal and continued
assistance must be submitted annually by the relevant closing dates. Renewal of
awards is NOT automatic and eligible
students are required to apply for
renewal annually.
CONTENTS In addition to the awards listed, certain other awards exist which are not acceptable in an open democratic society based on freedom and equality and are therefore not utilised or advertised by the
University of Cape Town.

Law Faculty
Master’s &
Doctoral
Scholarships
Law To encourage postgraduate research, the Law Faculty
makes awards to suitable
candidates for master's by research only or doctoral
degrees in the Faculty of
Law at UCT. This funding is to be regarded as a form
of bridging finance to give
students contemplating higher degrees the security
of knowing that their
financial needs will be at least partially met for the
first year of their studies,
which is a critical period in their progress. Successful
candidates must also make
application to the UCT Postgraduate Funding
Office and other appropriate
sources for scholarship
funding. Any award from
external sources that takes financial support beyond
the level of R230 000 per
annum for a master's student or R283 000 per
annum for a doctoral
student will then be deducted from the
scholarship granted by the
Faculty. Closing dates: 31 January
