Part6.NarrativePARTI:CURRENTRESEARCHThirty-seven(37)researchprojectswerehandledbytheReservestaffduringthefiscalyear.Seven(7)projectswere new and 22 were ongoing. Eight on-going or one-year projects were completed by the end of thereportingperiod.ThelevelofresearchinFY2013-14wasconsistentwiththe10-yearaverageof39projectsperyearbut six (6)projects fewer than thepreviousyear.A listingof the researchcanbe found inPart IV:CurrentResearchFY2013-14.

In2013-2014,researchersspent2935daysworkingon37projectsforanaverageof79daysperproject.Asinpreviousyears,themajorityofresearchconductedatSedgwickwasdoneduringday-onlyvisits.UCSBresearchershadboththemostprojects(18projectsand1169daysofuse).ThehighestlevelofusewascontributedbytheLosCumbresObservatoryTelescopeNetwork,whichreporteduseoftheBOStelescopeon90%ofviewablenights(1263).ThisusewaslargelybyremoteoperationoftheBOSobservatory.ResearchersfromotherUCcampuseswerethesecondmostfrequentuserswith7projectsand69userdays.TheremainingprojectswerecompletedbyOutofstateuniversities(5projects,47userdays),andInternationaluniversities(4projectsand27userdays).

Ofthoseapplicationsthatreportedgrantsupportinformation,68%oftheprojects(25)receivedacombinedtotalof$4,895,806ingrantfundingforthefiscalyear.Thirty-eight(38)publicationswerepublishedduring2013-14usingSedgwickdata.ThelargenumberofpublicationscanbeattributedtousingbettersearchfunctionsusingGoogleScholarandZoteropublicationmanagementsoftwareandlagtimeadditionalresearchprojectsconductedatSedgwickinFY2012-13.

higherqualityphotographsthanpreviouslyprovided.Theimprovedmanualassistsdocentswithrecordingdata.Phenologists’userdaystotaledover676forthefiscalyear.Five(5)docentscompletedtheCaliforniaNaturalistcertificationprogramofferedthroughtheSantaBarbaraBotanicGarden.Their“Capstone”projectsenhancenativeplantknowledgeandrestorationeffortsatSedgwickreserve,wildflowersofthereserve,andaslideshowpresentationofthereservepond’sdenizensandcattaileradicationactivities.Avalleyoakrestorationprojectcommencedinthewinterquarter.Avolunteergroupoffifteendocentsplantedone-hundred(100)valleyoakseedlingsandacorns,utilizingtraditionalplantingmethodsaswellasusingGroasisWaterboxxes,aself-wateringdevice.Sixmonthsintotheproject,therewasa75%survivalrate.PARTIV:STEWARDSHIPItwasanbelowaveragerainfallyearfortheReserve,withtheseasonalrainfalltotalof7.64inchesbeingrecordedbytheDRIweatherstationlocatedontheridgenorth-westoftheTiptonMeetingHouse.Thelast3wintershavebeenthedriestrecordedinCaliforniahistory.TheReserve’saquiferwasmeasuredbytheUSGSinMarch2014tobe28feetbelowsurface(inwetyearstheaquiferreachesthesurface,butaverages20feetbelowsurface.TheUSGShasbeensamplingtheaquifersince1950(64years).

Variousprojectswerecompletedthisfiscalyear:Depredationeffortsyielded22feralpigsusingtrapsonwateringsources(carriedoutbyreservestaffand1volunteer).BoyScouttroop42outofBuelltonreplacedaspringboxatCuckooSprings,aprojectsupervisedbyaSedgwicksteward.InfallquarterUCOPone-timecriticalneedsfundswereusedtohireabackhoeservicetoextractcattailsfromthepond.Theprojecttookfivedaystocomplete.Docentvolunteershelpedcleanupthereedremnantsfloatinginthepond.Therestoftheyear,twodocentvolunteerscontinuedtoremovecattailssproutingfromthebanks.ManagementPlanforHeirsParcel(farmingandgrazing)writtenFarmandgrazingleasescanceled.Newagreementswillbewrittenwhendroughtends.Weedmanagement:lowweedyearduetodrought;nogoatgrassfound.

Despite2013and2014beingexcellentacornyearsthereserveisseeingasignificantincreaseinthenumberofblueandValleyoaksdyinginplaceandfallingoverinwindevents.In2014twomassiveValleyOaksfell,oneinWindmillCanyonandoneneartheDirector’sresidence.Tricoloredblackbirdmonitoring;cameraonpond;pondturtles;bagradabuginvasion.DEVELOPMENTFiscalyear2013-14wasabanneryearforfundraisingattheReserve,cappedoffbya$2millionpledgefromUCSBalumnaLindaDuttenhaverwhosesupportforSedgwickhasbeentransformationaloverthelastsixyears.Lindahasfundedoutreachprogrammingforthelastseveralyearsandin2008fundedtherenovationofthebarn.Her2014giftwillmakepossibletherenovationoftheranchhouseprojectedtobecompletedduringfiscalyear2016.Alsoduringthefiscalyear,discussionswerebegunwiththismajordonoraboutherestateplanning;thesewillcontinueinearnestaftertheranchhouseiscompleted.Asinpastyears,severalhundredSedgwickfriendsanddonorswerepersonallysolicitedwithsnailmaillettersandreturnenvelopesinearlyDecember.Anadditional2000+peoplewhoreceivethemonthlynewslettersreceivedanonlinesolicitation.Docents,regularusersandneighborsoftheReservecontinuetobethemostconsistentdonorstotheReserve.(Publichikeselicitonaverage,about$150involuntarycontributions.)AboutadozenofSedgwick'sdonorswhosegiftsregularlyamountto$5kandaboveweresolicitedindividuallyandinpersonforspecialprojectsandinitiatives.Eachyearafewmoredonorsandprospectsareincludedinthesestewardship,cultivationandsolicitationactivitieswhichincludesmalldinnersheldatTiptonHouse,usuallycoincidingwithMs.Duttenhaver'svisits.Includingallgiftsforcurrentuseandcapitalprojects,totalsupportinFY14wasapproximately$2,125,000.Additionally,approximately$110,000wascontributedinfiscalyear2013-14totheSedgwickoperatingendowment.EventssuchasthepubliclecturesandtheannualBarnDance,heldinJuly2013,continuetoprovideexcellentvenuesforintroducingnewcomersandpotentialdonorstotheReserve.PlanningbeganinfinalquarterofthefiscalyearfortheFifthAnnualBarnDance,ahighlyanticipatedevent.FACILITIESDuringthefiscalyearfourlong-runningProp84(StateWildlifeConservationBoard)projectswerecompleted:thepolebarnadjacenttothehistoricbarnwasconvertedtoamaintenanceshop;electricalservicewasmovedtoasingleenclosureintheparkingarea,linesburiedwithinthefieldstationandserviceupgrade;waterlinesandasecondhydrantwasconstructedtobringpotablewatertoallfieldstationbuildings;androadsandparkingareaswereupgradedwithinthefieldstationarea.TotalcostfortheseWCBfundedinfrastructureimprovementswas$960,000.Annualvehiclemaintenancewascompletedonallreservevehicles.Themainwaterlinecomingfromthewellwasreplaced.Stewardscleanedupthesurplusbarnandalsomovedeverythingfromthepolebarninpreparationforit’scompleteremodel.Otherprojectscompletedbystewardswereobservatorytrailrestoration,mendingfencesandgates,rodentcontrolanddesigningfrostcoversforfiresprinklerbackflowdevices,andnativeplantrestoration.Facilityrentalsgenerated$11,020.70ininvoices.

ADMINISTRATIONInthefiscalyear,KateMcCurdyreachedher8thanniversaryasdirectorofthereserve.Assistedbytwopart-time(40%time)outreachcoordinators,thedirectormanagedmultiplereserveusersincludingresearchers(556usersand2624userdays);universitylevelclasses(258usersand372userdays);K-12groups(537usersand586userdays);anddocents,volunteers,NGOgroups,andotherpublicusers(2,736usersand3,580userdays).TheofficestaffgeneratedweeklynewsbulletinsenttoSedgwickadministrators,docentsandvolunteers.Katecreatedaquarterlynewslettertothegeneralinterestlist(over3,000subscribers).Reservemaintenancecontinuedtobesupportedbyacrewofpart-timestewardsValentinBarbosa-Navarro,GloriaLarios,GeorgeGranger,andBrianGuererro.Duringthefiscalyear,EricMasseywashiredintoafulltimeposition.
