University of Alaska Anchorage Welcomes our New Faculty for 2014/2015

Philippe Amstalavski, Associate Professor Public Health, College of Health Email: [email protected] Philippe is an environmental scientist with broad interests in geoinformatics, mapping and spatial statistics to measure and communicate data on climate, physical activity, and subsistence to improve health outcomes in the North. His interests and experience include Arctic environmental health, effects of changes in hydrology on Circumpolar health, fate of contaminants in the environment, heavy metals detection and remediation. This spring he collected 50 gallons of birch sap and made a delicious syrup for friends.

Terese Anderson, Term Assistant Professor Physical Therapy, College of Health Email: [email protected] Having practiced as a Physical Therapist Assistant for 23 years, Terese was hired in April 2014 to teach the new PTA Program in UAA’s Allied Health Department. She will also serve as Academic Clinical Coordinator of Education (ACCE), working with LeeAnne Carrothers in Allied Health. She has lived in Alaska since 1967.

Eric Andrews, Assistant Professor Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences Email: [email protected] Eric’s research interests lie primarily in the areas of Combinatorics and Graph Theory. He studies Eulerian and Hamiltonian properties in graphs, graph decompositions, and structures and is also interested in graph coloring problems (both vertex and edge colorings) as well as distance and domination in graphs and their applications. When not in the classroom or conducting research, he likes to play tennis, racquetball and do almost anything outdoors.

Jennifer Aschoff, Associate Professor Geology, Associate Professor Email: [email protected] Jennifer earned her Ph.D. at the University of Texas Austin (2008), worked for British Petroleum for2.5 years as a sedimentologist, and was a tenure track professor at Colorado School of Mines for 3.5 years. Her research at UAA is focused on understanding the formation, fill and natural resource potential of sedimentary basins. With her students, she integrates outcrop, well-log and core data in order to reconstruct the paleoenvironments, paleotectonics and petroleum systems within the sedimentary basin. She teaches sedimentary and petroleum geology courses, as well as field geology and professional practices.

Ginger Blackmon, Assistant Professor Educational Leadership, College of Education Email: [email protected] Ginger’s research agenda involves exploring the impact on student learning when schools are designed to address the learning needs, styles and opportunities for today's “digital natives”. She questions time, place, delivery method, building design, and roles of stakeholders. Additionally, she looks at the impact on student success when priority is placed on mastering how to learn over mastering content. Her teaching interest is in leadership. She is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Lindsey Blumenstein, Assistant Professor Justice, College of Health Email: [email protected] Lindsey’s primary area of research is crime and deviance with a specialty in intimate partner violence. Her teaching interests include data analysis, research methods, and domestic violence. She has done some work for the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. She was born and raised in South Florida and this is her first time living out of her home state!

Pam Bowers, Assistant Professor Social Work, College of Health Email: [email protected] Pam is originally from California but has lived in Colorado and Texas as well. Her research interests include cultural humility, cultural adaptations of health interventions, GLBT populations, health disparities, and social work education. Her teaching interests include diversity, research/program evaluation, community organizing, and school social work. She was once on The Wheel of Fortune television show; however, luck was not with her!

Sigrid Brudie, Assistant Professor Library Science, Consortium Library Email: [email protected] Sigrid is the medical reference librarian at the Alaska Medical Library (AML), a unit of the UAA/APU Consortium Library. Sigrid joined the AML staff in 2009 to work on the Arctic Health website and was hired as a library faculty member in 2013. She is the liaison librarian to UAA’s Allied and Public Health departments, providing library instruction and research assistance to those students and faculty. In addition to her work as a librarian, Sigrid teaches medical transcription for UAA’s School of Allied Health. She is a lifelong Alaskan with lots of family in Anchorage.

RaDeena Burgess, Term Assistant Professor Human Services, Matsu College Email: [email protected] RaDeena retired after 21 years as a high school teacher in the Anchorage School District where she taught Integrated Science and Psychology ("regular" & Advanced Placement courses). She currently enjoys teaching in the Human Services department at Mat-Su College. She is also Interim Program Coordinator for the Human Services and Behavioral Sciences department as they search for a new Program Coordinator. Outside of education, she breeds, trains, and competes with her Australian Shepherds.

Erik Carlson, Assistant Professor Library Science, Consortium Library Email: [email protected] Erik Carlson was born across the street from the UAA/APU Consortium Library. After a wild decade of playing really high notes on his trumpet and acquiring advanced degrees from the University of Southern California, Yale, and Drexel, he returned home to pursue his first love: organizing all things. His professional world revolves around institutional repositories with frequent diversions into metadata, intellectual property, the semantic web, and human computer interaction.

Debra Crawford, Assistant Professor Math - CPDS, Community and Technical College Email: [email protected] Debra is a term instructor, teaching math for College Prep and Developmental Studies. She has taught math as an adjunct for one academic year, prior to which she taught high school science for 16 years. She also has extensive experience as an interpretive naturalist in Alaska. Debra’s husband taught at UAA for over 30 years and still continues to teach as an adjunct after retirement.

Media Csoba DeHass, Assistant Professor Anthropology, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Media is an anthropologist interested in collaborative research, virtual repatriation, working with Alaska’s Native communities, ethnohistory, and the anthropology of religion. She has been working with the Sugpiaq community of Nanwalek, Alaska, for the past ten years on a variety of projects, including her doctoral and postdoctoral research. She is originally from Hungary, but has been living in the U.S. for the past 14 years.

Reed David, Term Instructor Cataloging Librarian/Consortium Library Email: [email protected] Reed is the Cataloging Librarian at the UAA/APU Consortium Library and Alaska Resources Library & Information Services (ARLIS).

Ajit Dayanandan, Associate Professor Accounting and Finance, College of Business & Public Policy Email: [email protected] Ajit’s primary area of research is corporate finance and investments. He is originally from India, but has studied and worked in Australia and Canada. His current research interests include event studies (e.g., impact of profit warning on stock returns), earnings management and corporate governance issues.

David Edmonds, Term Instructor Automotive Technology, Community & Technical College Email: [email protected] David has been an automotive instructor for the BMW product for 12 years, and he loves working on cars. He also loves helping people to be successful. He is relocating from Avondale, Arizona, and brought his 8 children and 2 dogs with him.

Sharon Emmerichs, Assistant Professor English, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Sharon specializes in Early Modern literature--specifically Shakespeare--and is interested in ecocriticism and cultural definitions of landscape in Renaissance drama and poetry. She is also doing research for a project about Shakespeare and the seven deadly sins, which she plans to turn into her first academic book. An interesting fact about Sharon is that she has also published two speculative fiction novels under a pseudonym and wrote two others that have not yet been published.

Tammy Farrell, Term Assistant Professor Math & Process Technology, Kenai Pennisula College Email: [email protected] Tammy's back ground is in aviation, where she is an aircraft mechanic, inspector, and avionics engineer. She has worked for the FAA in the development of transceivers for control towers and as a 747 fleet engineer for United Airlines. She loves to travel and meet interesting people along the way.

Sandie Gilliland, Term Instructor Process Technology, Kenai Peninsula College Email: [email protected] Sandie teaches the introductory classes for the process technology program at Kenai Peninsula College (KPC). He will also be helping place students in internships and full time positions. He is an avid outdoorsman.

Lukasz Grabarek, Assistant Professor Mathematics, Kachemak Bay Campus & Matsu College Email: [email protected] Lukasz is a mathematician interested in complex function theory, location and distribution of zeros of entire functions. He is interested in teaching and developing hybrid and online courses. Lukasz is also part of the Math Kangaroo International Mathematics Competition development team. He is an avid hiker who dreams of summiting Mt. McKinley one day.

Albert R. Grant, Assistant Professor Occupational Safety & Health, Kenai Peninsula College Email: [email protected] Albert’s duties are to teach freshmen and sophomore level Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) courses in support of programs at KPC’s Anchorage Extension Site; advise students in course selection, degree requirements and other related areas; manage OSH curriculum and the AAS degree program; develop and update OSH curriculum; perform community service related to the university/college, OSH program/OSH career field; and coordinate with industry partners.

Getu Hailu, Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering Email: [email protected] Getu’s research interests include building integrated photovoltaic thermal (BIPV/T) systems, CFD of of BIPV/T systems, heat pumps, cryogenic abrasive jet micro-machining and solid particle erosion. His teaching interests include Thermal Systems Design and HVAC.

Christian Haich, Term Instructor Physics, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Christian moved back to Alaska this summer after an absence of over 20 years, and will be an instructor in the Physics and Astronomy department. His interests include teaching physics and mathematics, bike riding, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, and juggling.

Hattie Harvey, Assistant Professor Early Childhood Development, College of Education Email: [email protected] Hattie’s research focuses on executive function development in young children and how executive function skills impact early mathematical learning and behavioral self-regulation. Her teaching interests include early childhood inclusive practices, models of positive behavior supports, and using assessment to guide instructional planning. She is also involved in a number of projects with the Anchorage School District preschool programs to evaluate the effects of Response to Intervention (RTI) on student outcomes in early childhood classrooms.

David Helmso, Term Assistant Professor Aviation Maintenance Technology, Community & Technical College Email: [email protected] David comes to UAA after serving 24 years in the U.S. Navy [ballistic missile submarine] and the U.S. Air Force [Airborne Warning and Control Systems]. He did Masters work in Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma, earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Charleston Southern University, and an A.A.S. in Aviation Maintenance Technology at UAA. His teaching interests are in aviation maintenance and repair technology. He is currently a project volunteer and docent at the Alaska Aviation Museum, a founding member, docent, warbird pilot, and mechanic for Wings of Freedom Alaska Aviation Museum, and a member of the Alaska Wing of the Commemorative Air Force.

Drew Holt, Term Instructor Mathematics, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Drew’s area of interest is mathematics. He is currently learning Mathematica. He likes to do math and talk about math. He graduated from East Anchorage High School, then joined the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a missile mechanic. He attended college at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he graduated with an M.S. in Mathematics and met his wife, Elizabeth. He worked for British Petroleum for about 21 years. Drew likes to work on projects in his home shop and once rode a bicycle from Fairbanks to Valdez.

D’Arcy Hutchings, Term Assistant Professor Library Science, Consortium Library Email: [email protected] After working as a staff member at UAA for 12 years, D’Arcy started her first faculty position at the Consortium Library in February. As the Instructional Design Librarian, her role is to provide support for library faculty with regard to their instruction.

Alexander James, Assistant Professor Economics, College of Business and Public Policy Email: [email protected] Alexander’s research and teaching interests broadly include environmental and resource economics. He is also interested in analyzing a variety of economic problems using experimental methods, especially those related to non-market valuation and public policy. Alexander is from California, went to graduate school in Wyoming, completed his post- doctoral research in Oxford, England and is excited to now be a resident of Alaska!

Johnny Kirby, Assistant Professor Refrigeration & Heating, Matsu College Email: [email protected] John grew up near the line between Arkansas and Oklahoma with a background in agriculture. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1993 with a B.S. in Animal Science. After moving to Alaska in the late 90’s, and seeing a need in industry, he worked and acquired an A.A.S. in Refrigeration and Heating Technology from Mat-Su College in 2005. In 2007, after working in the Heating, Ventilation, and

Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry for a few years, he began teaching science in public school. He enjoys teaching and HVAC, and at Mat Su he is privileged to do both!

Max Kullberg, Assistant Professor Medical Education, College of Health Email: [email protected] Max was born and raised in Alaska and after completing a degree in Physics in the lower 48, came back to finish up his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UAA. Most recently, he was in Denver for a Pharmaceutical Sciences Postdoc, but he is very excited to be back as part of the WWAMI team. His lab research uses targeted nanoparticles to deliver therapeutic genes and drugs specifically to cancer cells with the hopes of establishing an anti-tumor immune response.

Suzanne Lorenz, Term Instructor Physics, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Suzanne is newly arrived to UAA from Purdue University in Indiana, where she completed her thesis on mapping dark matter with weak gravitational lensing and stayed on at a visiting scholar with the VERITAS Collaboration. While at Purdue in this capacity, Suzanne taught at both Valparaiso and Purdue Universities. Additionally, she is an accomplished amateur carpenter (ABCO).

Mary Mathie, Term Assistant Professor Political Science, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Mary Mathie came to Anchorage from Ontario, Canada, by way of Waco, Texas. Before her graduate work, she worked in political campaigning and energy policy research in Toronto. Dr. Mathie has taught American politics and political philosophy at Baylor University and the College of the Holy Cross. Her teaching and research interests focus on American law, government, and political thought; the American regime in comparative perspective, especially with Canada; political philosophy; and politics.

Terry Naumann, Term Assistant Professor Geological Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Terry Naumann is a motorcycle-loving geologist who has studied volcanoes throughout North America, the Pacific Ocean, and beyond. He started his teaching career working in the desert southwest (University of Nevada Las Vegas), but was lucky enough to eventually land a full-time job at UAA in 1999. He spent 16 years enthusiastically teaching UAA students about rocks and leading field trips to the Southwestern U.S., Hawaii and even the Galapagos Islands. He retired from UAA last fall to pursue his hobbies while continuing to teach some geo classes online. He is thrilled to be back at UAA temporarily for this live encore performance!

John Nofsinger, Professor Accounting & Finance, College of Business & Public Policy Email: [email protected] John teaches finance courses and has developed courses for classroom delivery, online, and remote locations. He has also authored/co-authored ten finance trade-, text-, and scholarly books that have been translated into eight languages. His book, The Psychology of Investing, is popular with investment advisors. He is also a prolific scholar, having published nearly 50 articles in prestigious scholarly and practitioner journals. John loves road cycling and will have to learn how to go off-road.

Kristen Ogilvie, Assistant Professor Anthropology, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Kristen is an applied cultural anthropologist who works with rural communities towards positive community development. Her research seeks to develop effective, local strategies to prevent problem substance use in rural communities and incorporates anthropological perspectives on community, well-being, wealth, and environment in collaborations. She enjoys teaching anthropology as much as doing it. Originally from Arizona, Kristen has lived in Alaska for over 12 years and is raising her school-aged children here.

Gina Ottinger Pastos, Term Assistant Professor Educational Leadership, College of Education Email: [email protected] Gina is new to UAA as a term professor but has been an adjunct with UAA since 2011. She was in the field of education as a teacher and principal for a combination of 27 years. Her main area of interest/research is trust in school culture.

A graduate of the MFA program in creative writing at George Mason University, Kate Partridge teaches introductory composition and literature courses. Her poems have appeared in The Colorado Review, Barrelhouse, RHINO, and Verse Daily, and she has been awarded residencies by the Vermont Studio Center, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, and Polar Lab. She coordinates the Crosscurrents Reading Series, co-edits Gazing Grain Press, and is a Count Coordinator for VIDA: Women in Literary Arts. She loves asparagus.

Jifeng Peng, Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering Email: [email protected] Professor Jifeng Peng started as an assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2009 before transferring to UAA in spring, 2014. He has been teaching courses in statics, dynamics, fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, renewable energy and design projects. His research includes projects in propulsion, wind energy, transport and mixing in the atmosphere and the ocean, funded by the National Science Foundation, Moore Foundation and other agencies.

Salvatore Pietromonaco, Term Assistant Professor Chemistry, Matsu College Email: [email protected] Salvatore’s teaching and research interests are in Chemistry/Biochemistry and he would be interested in becoming an undergraduate research sponsor. His teaching experience includes a 10-year stint in various international schools. Salvatore has also published basic research in biochemistry and cell biology.

Robert Poe, Term Assistant Professor Business Administration, College of Business & Public Policy Email: [email protected] After a 35-year career in both the private and public sectors and serving five Alaska governors in four cabinet roles, Robert Poe wanted to give back to the community by spending the next (and likely last) ten years of his career teaching, writing, and positively influencing Alaska’s next leaders, the students at UAA. His particular focus is Alaska Native Corporations, the value systems they use and how those values affect decision-making as compared with similar non-Native companies.

Melissa Ray, Term Instructor English, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Melissa teaches English composition and introductory literature courses, including Technical Writing, Academic Writing about Literature, and Masterpieces of World Literature I and II. On a personal note, she loves to travel, and has a weakness for Jane Austen, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Matt Reeves, Associate Professor Geological Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences Email: [email protected] Dr. Matt Reeves is a newly appointed Associate Professor at UAA. He received a Ph.D. in Hydrogeology from the University of Nevada, and worked as a Research Professor at DRI for the past 8 years where he taught classes, mentored graduate students and led projects on basin-scale water resources, geothermal energy, contaminant transport, and geological hazards. Dr. Reeves is interested in starting a successful Hydrogeology program at UAA, and loves the outdoor opportunities that Alaska provides.

Ruth Robb, Term Instructor Mathematics, Prince William Sound Community College Email: [email protected] Ruth is originally from Detroit, Michigan, although more recently she bought property near Marquette, in Michigan’s upper peninsula. She taught high school for 26 years, retiring in 2003, after which she was a substitute teacher and taught community college and online courses at a few schools, including Prince William Sound Community College (PWSCC). This year, after traveling in an RV for a little over a year, she will be living in Valdez and working at PWSCC. She visited Alaska in 2008, including Valdez, so she knew she would like it.

Molly Rothmeyer, Assistant Professor Nursing, College of Health Email: [email protected] Molly Rothmeyer was a Registered Nurse for 18 years, a Nurse Practitioner for nine years, and was discharged honorably from the Army. She is certified in family practice and pediatric acute care. She did her doctoral work in reducing unnecessary head catscans in pediatric head trauma patients. She is married with three sons.

Grant Sasse, Assistant Professor Counselor Education, College of Education Email: [email protected] Grant Sasse’s research is centered around three core areas: addictions, dogmatism, and the counseling skills of openness and empathy. He enjoys teaching students how to be counselors and has a particular passion for addictions-focused counseling courses. One interesting fact about Grant is that he cooked kettle corn in the summers to help financially support his family during graduate school.

Margaret Spencer, Term Assistant Professor Speech Pathology, College of Education Email: [email protected] Margaret Spencer is a speech pathologist with 34 years of experience. She has worked in a variety of settings that include: private practice, rehabilitation center and public school. During the past six years she has worked in the summers as a clinical supervisor and taught several classes as an adjunct instructor. She is very excited about working with others who desire to venture into the study of the communication disorders.

Lorelei Sterling, Assistant Professor Library Science, Consortium Library Email: [email protected] Lorelei Sterling holds dual master's degrees in Library and Information Science and History. Her research interests include Distance Education and Access Services. An interesting fact about Lorelei is that this move from San Diego marks number 30 since 1991!

Tracy Swaim, Term Instructor Library Science, Consortium Library Email: [email protected] Tracy is the director of the Alaska Library Network. His primary responsibility is to enhance resources available to libraries across the state. Most of his teaching will be in the form of online documentation and training. He is also a composer and likes to sing!

Ruth D. Terry, Assistant Professor Library Science, Consortium Library Email: [email protected] Ruth is newly arrived in Alaska from south Texas, where she lived along the Gulf of Mexico coast for the last 15 years. She is a member of the library's Instruction and Research Services department, serving as the liaison librarian for the College of Business and Public Policy. Ruth is interested in Information Literacy and Instruction. A few interesting facts about Ruth are that she tries to learn one new Chopin nocturne every few years and her favorite U.S. travel destination is New Orleans.

Connie Thomas, Term Instructor Library Science, Consortium Library Email: [email protected] Connie is the Collection Analysis and Acquisitions Librarian, a dual role of analyzing the materials in the collections and purchasing new resources. She is the liaison to Women's Studies as well. She has an amazing green thumb, is an experienced dog trainer, and knows how to fly fish.

Adrainne Thomas, Assistant Professor Special Education, College of Education Email: [email protected] Adrainne Thomas is originally from NYC but lived in Hawaii for 10 years before coming to Alaska. Prior to moving to Anchorage, she lived in Juneau where she was an Assistant Professor of Special Education at the University of Alaska Southeast. Her current research interests are culturally responsive behavior support planning, working with culturally diverse families, and instructional planning for students with special needs. She is a former producer for the Anchorage International Film Festival and was a volunteer at the Alaska Rose Garden.

She holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mathematics from Middle Tennessee State University. As an instructor of Mathematics at Weatherford College, she received an award for Excellence in Teaching from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development. Raymond Weber, Assistant Professor Aviation Technology, Community and Technical College Email: [email protected] Raymond Weber is a graduate of the University of North Dakota’s J.D. Odegard School for Aerospace Sciences, with both a B.S. and M.S. in aviation. He is also a certified flight instructor and commercial pilot. He worked at Kent State University working up to a rank of Associate Professor, teaching assorted courses including Elements of Flight Theory and Multi-engine Theory. His current focus has been in aviation safety and safety analysis. He is currently ABD in Instructional Technologies.

Frank Witmer, Assistant Professor Computer Science, School of Engineering Email: [email protected] Frank’s research interests are in studying human-environment interactions using satellite imagery, spatial statistical analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), and geovisualization, with a recent focus on studying the effects of climate change on conflict in sub-Saharan Africa. His teaching interests are similar: GIS programming, quantitative methods, spatial statistics, GIScience, and remote sensing. You may find it interesting that Frank plays euphonium and loves a good Tuba Christmas.
