ZOTH FEBRUARY, 1975, BOOK A N D SERIAL LOANS LAST Y E A R In 1974 the University Library supplied 128,000 books and serials on loan to members of staff and students. This figure is a record, the previous highest tally having been reached in 1973 (123,000). The Assistant University Librarian (Reader Services) Miss J.E. Murray, who supplied these figures, said that the Library had also increased its participation in the Inter - Library Loan Service in 1974. The Library supplied 5,193 books on loan to other libraries and borrowed 4,154. REPORT FROM THE U N I O N The Board of Management of the Union has asked for a report on whether it might be feasible for the Union to sell petrol on t h e campus. Further., an investigation will be made into the provision of lockers for use by Union members. ************* The Union wiZZ conduct a drive endeavouring to influence members to be tidy. ttDontt Rubbish Your &iontt wiZZ be used as a slogan. The retuxn of used cmckery to speeiat coZZectwnt points and the pZacement of titter in receptaczes will be suggested. ************* Pieces of carpet will be bought to protect the dance floor in the Southern Cross Lounge during term when it will be necessary to increase the number of dining tables. ************* Second- hand text books and academic outfits are asptaged in a mom opposite the Union Shop. STAFF APPOINTMENT 1 Mr. Bruce Knappett has taken up duties as Tutor in the newly established Department of Creative Arts. He holds B.A. and LL.B. degrees in the University of Melbourne. Mr. Knappett practised as a Barrister for five years after leaving Melbourne University. He belonged to the Australian Performing Group, which presents plays at The Pram Factory, and was in the cast of the first production of I1Donts Party". Currently Drama Critic for "The Nation Review w , he previously wrote for "The Bulletinlt, "The Australian v and the A.B.C. In Newcastle he will be looking for an opportunity to direct a professional acting cast for a production. / GRADUATION B A L L I Tickets for the Graduation Ball to be held on March 21 have sold so swiftly that all loges in the Great Hall are likely to be reserved by the end of this week. Loges are also available in the Union and the Staff House. Tickets for the ball cost $6, which includes the cost of providing supper during the Ball but does not include the cost of liquor. The Graduation Waltz will be danced in the Great Hall at 10 p.m. and in the Union at 11.15 p.m. This year supper will be served at three locations in the Union in an attempt to overcome difficulties experienced last year. Tickets can be purchased from Mr. S. Barwick, Room T23, Amenities Office, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

After completing a form and paying $5 each member i s given a share number. This number should be quoted when purchasing books. Each year a dividend is declared and a cheque is sent t o each ac t ive member, usually i n October.

Each year Newcastle P i v i s i ~ n of t he In s t i t u t i on of Engi'neers, Australia, presents a p r i ze t o the outstanding Engineering student from the University. Oversea student, Sui Cheong Albert Poon, an Elec t r ica l Engineering student, was selected t o receive the I n s t i t u t i o n t s p r i ze t h i s year.

The Chairman of t h e In s t i t u t i on (Mr. G.D. Butler) presented the p r i ze t o M r . Poon on February 14.

M r . Poon, 24, comes from Hong Kong and w i l l be awarded a University Medal i n E lec t r ica l Engineering a t t he conferring o f degrees ceremonies i n the Great Hall on 21st March.

Current economic concerns such as t h e depletion and conservation of resources, population, urban problems, i n f l a t i on , r e s t r i c t i v e t rade prac t ices and the ro l e of the Government a r e examined.

In the Preface, Professor Tisde l l s t a t e s t ha t he had attempted t o f u l f i l the need f o r an introductory microeconomic t ex t , with Australian i l l u s t r a t i o n s and

DP. John Raschke, t h e medical p rac t i t i one r who was attached t o the Health Centre i n t h e Union, will not be avai lable t o work at the Centre t h i s year.

The Vice-Principal (Professor A.D. Tweedie), who announced th i s , s a i d the University was hoping t o appoint a doctor t o replace D r . Raschke i n t h e ear ly future. I n the meantime, Sieter K. 8. Krister would be attached t o t h e Health Service as nurse on a part- time basis . She would start work on 24th February and would be accessible t o students on days a week.
