In 1974 the University Library supplied 128,000 books and s e r i a l s on loan to members of s t a f f and students. This f igure i s a record, the previous highest t a l l y having been reached i n 1973 (123,000).
The Assistant University Librarian (Reader Services) Miss J . E . Murray, who supplied these f igures , sa id t h a t the Library had a l so increased i t s par t ic ipa t ion i n t he Inter-Library Loan Service i n 1974. The Library supplied 5,193 books on loan t o other l i b r a r i e s and borrowed 4,154.

M r . Knappett pract ised as a Bar r i s te r f o r f i v e years a f t e r leaving Melbourne University. He belonged t o the Australian Performing Group, which presents plays a t The Pram Factory, and was i n the cas t of t h e f i r s t production of I1Donts Party". The Bookshop i s i n the Union Building. The joining f ee is $5, payable once only, refundable on request. Membership forms a r e avai lable from the bookshop. After completing a form and paying $5 each member i s given a share number. This number should be quoted when purchasing books. Each year a dividend is declared and a cheque is sent t o each ac t ive member, usually i n October.

Each year Newcastle P i v i s i ~ n of t he In s t i t u t i on of Engi'neers, Australia, presents a p r i ze t o the outstanding Engineering student from the University. Oversea student, Sui Cheong Albert Poon, an Elec t r ica l Engineering student, was selected t o receive the I n s t i t u t i o n t s p r i ze t h i s year.
The Chairman of t h e In s t i t u t i on (Mr. G.D. Butler) presented the p r i ze t o M r . Poon on February 14.
M r . Poon, 24, comes from Hong Kong and w i l l be awarded a University Medal i n E lec t r ica l Engineering a t t he conferring o f degrees ceremonies i n the Great Hall on 21st March.

The course w i l l involve attendance a t the University two evenings of each week through normal University terms. I t w i l l comence a t the beginning of Apri 1.

The f i n a l assessment of each s tudent ' s work, including the exahination, w i l l be passed d i r ec t t o the Admissions Committee of the University and students w i l l be not i f ied i n due course whether o r not t h e i r applications f o r admission t o degree courses i n 1976 have been accepted.

The book is e s sen t i a l l y about basic microeconomic techniques and t h e i r appl icab i l i ty . Current economic concerns such as t h e depletion and conservation of resources, population, urban problems, i n f l a t i on , r e s t r i c t i v e t rade prac t ices and the ro l e of the Government a r e examined.
In the Preface, Professor Tisde l l s t a t e s t ha t he had attempted t o f u l f i l the need f o r an introductory microeconomic t ex t , with Australian i l l u s t r a t i o n s and

DP. John Raschke, t h e medical p rac t i t i one r who was attached t o the Health Centre i n t h e Union, will not be avai lable t o work at the Centre t h i s year.
The Vice-Principal (Professor A.D. Tweedie), who announced th i s , s a i d the University was hoping t o appoint a doctor t o replace D r . Raschke i n t h e ear ly future. I n the meantime, Sieter K. 8. Krister would be attached t o t h e Health Service as nurse on a part- time basis . She would start work on 24th February and would be accessible t o students on days a week.

N.S.W. Champion - Stan Barwick, the Amenities Org&iser, won the 800 metres . - f i n a l a t t he N.S.W. Athletics Championships on 16th2February. Running a t Hensley Field , he repeatedrhis best previous time - 1 min. 49.2 sec. -.and was subsequently se lec ted t o run f o r the S t a t e i n the Australian Athlet ics Championships i n Adelaide on 22nd and 23rd March.
