Bemidji State University expects to see the successful end of a years-long journey to reimagine our classroom experience when the brand-new Hagg-Sauer Hall opens this fall. This modern, accessible classroom building replaces the previous Hagg-Sauer Hall, a multi-purpose facility with classrooms and offices originally constructed in 1970. The new Hagg-Sauer Hall includes nearly 28,000 square feet of classroom, lecture and active-learning spaces in a flexible, modern and energy-efficient building. As Bemidji State begins Our Second Century, the new Hagg-Sauer Hall will be a beacon that guides us into the future.

In its nearly five decades of service to the university, the old Hagg-Sauer Hall was home to more than a dozen academic programs and more than 750 faculty, staff and graduate assistants.

In addition to construction of a new Hagg-Sauer Hall, this project also includes significant renovations to Bensen and Sattgast halls, the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex and the A.C. Clark Library. If you’ve been on campus in the past, please refer to the Campus Guide beginning on Page 12, as a number of services and offices have changed locations.

Campus TraditionsSchool Colors: Green & White

Bemidji State University adopted its school colors of green and white in 1920. During a deadlocked campus debate on the selection of campus colors, student Cyrillus Freeman said that looking out of the window revealed “fresh green pines silhouetted against pure white snow.” Her suggestion was unanimously adopted by the assembly.

Home of the Beavers

In May of 1932 while attending a football practice, Bemidji State Teachers College President Dr. Manfred Deputy called the team together and commented that they were “working as hard as beavers.” The nickname symbolizes hard work and endurance.

Homecoming Lake Jump

The Bemidji State football program has created one of the greatest traditions in Division II athletics when they take a celebratory swim in Lake Bemidji following a victory in the annual Homecoming game.

Annual Pow Wow

Each spring, Bemidji State’s Council of Indian Students holds a campus and community-wide pow wow to promote the unique and beautiful history, traditions and culture of the American Indian people. The CIS pow wow has been held for the last 47 years, making it one of the region’s oldest.

Get InvolvedYou’re here for a great education, but we hope you’ll get involved outside the classroom as well. Getting involved in student organizations and leadership opportunities will help you develop important skills such as organization and time management, communication and networking. Your involvement in campus activities and organizations will help you make friends and create memories of your time at BSU.

BeaverLink

BeaverLink is your one-stop source for campus involvement. Log in through MyBSU to discover more than 80 student clubs and organizations. Fill out your profile, reach out to clubs or organizations that interest you and become a member. BeaverLink also includes tools to track all of your involvement and service hours in one place, creating a student involvement transcript you can use to build your resumé. The Hobson Memorial Union staff shares more information about BeaverLink throughout the fall semester.

Campus Activities Board

Watch for great events sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB). Speakers, musicians, comedians, magicians, large socials and more will help you meet new friends, relieve stress, get free stuff and create lifelong BSU memories.

Hobson Memorial Union

Both the upper and lower Hobson Memorial Union buildings are great places to connect with friends, study and attend events and activities. Grab lunch in the Lakeside Food Court overlooking Lake Bemidji, attend an evening social or just hang out in the Terrace Lounge watching TV or playing pool.

STUDENT HANDBOOKThe Bemidji State University Student Handbook describes your rights and responsibilities as a student. It contains the policies and procedures that relate to many aspects of your life as a BSU student, in and out of the classroom. Whether you study on campus or online, membership in the BSU community brings with it the responsibility of becoming familiar with these policies.

Bemidji State University reserves the right to change, without notice, any of the materials (information, requirements, and regulations) published in the Handbook. Revisions are published to the student body and the university community through the Student Handbook website, which you can find at www.bemidjistate.edu/offices/student-affairs/handbook/

If you have specific questions relating to policies and procedures within the Handbook, please contact Student Life & Success at (218) 755-2075 or [email protected].

POLICIES & PROCEDURESAs a BSU student, it is important that you are aware of the policies and procedures relating to many aspects of your life at the university — in and out of the classroom. These policies support a safe, respectful and ethical living, learning and work environment which complies with the university’s mission and values

and applicable state, local and federal law. All Bemidji State faculty, staff and students are expected to be familiar with and abide by these policies. A full list and versions of all policies and procedures can be found in the online Student Handbook.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCTThe BSU Student Code of Conduct and student conduct system are an integral part of BSU’s mission. The conduct system contributes to the teaching of appropriate individual and group behavior and establishes behavioral expectations to foster a campus community free from disruption and harm. Students are expected to be familiar with the Student Code of Conduct and the student conduct system. The rights and responsibilities of students and the expectations of the university are described in the handbook, along with grievance reporting and other procedures. Behavior that is threatening to the safety or welfare of one’s self or others, or that is harassing or discriminatory in nature, will be reviewed promptly by the university and appropriate action will be taken.

A full version of the Student Code of Conduct can be found in the online Student Handbook. Information about how to file a complaint is available on the university website and on Page 8 of this planner.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

SEXUAL VIOLENCE PREVENTIONA safe and healthy educational environment is important to Bemidji State University’s mission and values. BSU’s Sexual Violence Policy provides clear, concise and specific information to all members of our community. Sexual violence is an intolerable intrusion into the most personal and private rights of an individual and is prohibited at Bemidji State. The university is committed to eliminating sexual violence in all forms and will take appropriate remedial action against any individual found responsible for acts in violation of the Sexual Violence Policy. BSU’s Affirmative Action Officer/

Title IX Coordinator investigates sexual violence complaints. Acts of sexual violence may also constitute violations of criminal or civil law, which may require separate proceedings external to the university. To further its commitment against sexual violence, Bemidji State provides multiple reporting options, an investigative and disciplinary process, prevention training and other related services as appropriate. A full version of the Sexual Violence Policy can be found in the online Student Handbook at www.bemidjistate.edu/offices/student-affairs/handbook/

STUDENT TECHNOLOGY POLICYAccess to the BSU network is a privilege that comes with both rights and responsibilities. All persons who use university technology resources are required to abide by the policies specified in the Minnesota State Board Policy 5.22, Acceptable Use of Computers and Information Technology Resources (available at minnstate.edu). Restricted activities include copyright infringement and anonymous file-sharing. Bemidji State University takes a strong stand against unlawful distribution of copyrighted music, movies and software. The university responds to copyright infringement notices from copyright owners who actively search for such materials on the network. A full version of the Student Technology Policy can be found in the online Student Handbook.

SUBMIT AN ANONYMOUS COMPLAINTTo submit an anonymous complaint, visit the Affirmative Action website: bemidjistate.edu/offices/affirmative-action/
