Greetings from the University Honors Program! It is our pleasure to welcome all students, faculty, and staff to campus, particularly ISU’s new president, Dr. Daniel Bradley, and our first-year Honors students. Some of you are returning from vacation or work, some from internships and others from study abroad. The faculty and staff of the Honors Program are here to guide you toward rewarding academic experiences, as well as opportunities to socialize, to engage with culture and the community, and to apply your leadership at ISU. As you return to classes and campus residence, please stop by and visit our new program offices in the Rhoads Hall Mezzanine and introduce yourself to Laura Froelicher, the new Honors Coordinator for Student Programming and Outreach. Laura has already established herself as an essential member of the program and will be working closely with student leaders to develop activities and opportunities to supplement the Honors curriculum. We are particularly excited about the array of General Honors classes offered this fall by ISU professors. From courses dealing with the rhetoric of the 2008 Presidential campaign, to the classical cultures of Greece and Rome, to Russian history, to nano-science, we are certain you will find a seminar that intrigues you. The incoming class of Honors students that will be participating in these classes is the largest in recent times: 150 students. Welcome! An exciting semester awaits you. RHOADS HALL: HONORS’ NEW HOME

Beginning in August 2008, the University Honors Program is relocating to a new facility in Rhoads Hall. Rhoads Hall has been the Honors residence hall for some time, and will continue to be a place where Honors students can live and socialize with their peers. However, thanks to recent renovations, Honors students will now have their own study lounge (complete with a gas log fireplace!) right in Rhoads, as well as a classroom for group meetings and programs. Additionally, the Honors offices are moving to Rhoads, on the mezzanine directly above the lounge. These changes will help make University Honors Program resources more easily accessible to Honors students.

The University Honors Student Association is a great way to begin your involvement with the University Honors Program and the ISU community. UHSA meets twice each month and offers a variety of leadership and social networking opportunities, including:

• Officer and committee chair positions • Social events for Honors students • Dinners with ISU guest speakers • Regional and national conferences • Community service around Terre Haute and Vigo County • Museum visits and cultural events

UHSA is a great way to connect with other Honors students. If you are interested in becoming a member of UHSA or would like more information, please contact 2008-2009 UHSA President Krystal Griffith at [email protected] or visit the University Honors Program website: http://www.indstate.edu/honors/UHSA

HONORS NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE

After Images is Indiana State University's Honors journal for the publication of student creative works. Drawing on the notion of “afterimage: a mental or visual image that is retained by the senses and produces a lasting sensation,” the journal seeks to provide a forum for student expression, promoting art and creative writing at ISU. Copies of the 2007-2008 journal are available for purchase for $3.00 in the Honors Office.

After Images is currently taking applications for its staff, as well as seeking submissions for the Spring 2009 volume. For more information about applying to be a staff member and/or specific submission requirements, visit http://www.indstate.edu/honors/afterimages or contact the After Images Faculty Advisor, Dr. Keri Berg, at [email protected].

If you are seeking Honors students to fill leadership positions, lab assistantships, internships, or other key roles, please contact the University Honors Program office at (812) 237-3225. We would be happy to help you find individuals to take advantage of those opportunities. Additionally, please make us aware of any departmental programs or speakers that Honors students may benefit from.

STUDY ABROAD AS AN HONORS STUDENT Q&A with Sadie May Davis

Where did you study abroad? I studied abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica. I knew I wanted to study abroad by the end of my freshman year, but it took me a long time to decide where and when I wanted to go. I chose a Spanish language immersion program in San Jose because it fit my time schedule and curriculum interests. I was also excited about the beautiful weather and different culture I would find there. What was your experience like? My experience was completely spectacular. I attended Universidad Veritas for three months during the dry season in Costa Rica. I took Spanish language immersion classes all morning and an English-taught human rights elective some afternoons. I also was a regular at the free Latin dance classes. For my first trip abroad, it was perfect. I lived with a family, made new friends from Costa Rica, the U.S., and the rest of the world, and learned how to reach outside of my comfort zone to make the most of my experience. Each weekend I explored volcanoes, rain forests, beaches, or a bustling Latin American capital.

How did you benefit from studying abroad? Though no study abroad experience can be summarized in a few sentences, I can say that it really has changed the way I look at my life. I left for Costa Rica with a nervous, yet optimistic attitude, and I came home with increased confidence, diversified people skills, and a pretty nice tan. On a social level, my experience taught me to look forward to meeting new people and immersing myself in new cultures. Academically, I made a huge leap in my Spanish skills and brought back an incredible selling point for my resume.

Why should I study abroad? I am a firm believer that any Honors student should look into studying abroad, regardless of interest or major. An experience abroad allows you to explore a new culture and yourself at the same time. The possibility of leaving everything you know can be scary, but you learn so much and have so much fun while you are facing the challenge that you begin to understand that the scary possibilities in life are the most beneficial you can pursue. If I am interested in studying abroad, who should I talk to? If you are interested in studying abroad, you should talk to the Coordinator for Academic Programs Abroad, Janis Halpern. She is a fantastic resource who loves talking to students about prospective trips. She will listen to your interests and your concerns and find a variety of programs that are right for you. Janis can be contacted via email ([email protected]), phone (812-237-3427), or in person (Stalker Hall Room 215). You can also attend the study abroad fair in Dede III on Wednesday, October 15 from 1:00-4:00pm.

I am a Studio Arts major, focusing on painting, with an art history minor. I really enjoy the art community here at ISU and appreciate the opportunities available through the university to showcase my art. Not only am I able to submit my pieces to university planned

shows, but can even host my own show in Fairbanks Hall. Furthermore, the city of Terre Haute also offers several art-related venues, such as the Swope Museum and coffee shops, which often feature student work.

At the moment, my current involvement at ISU does mainly fall in the art program, including participation in the art fraternity, Kappa Pi. However, I am also a member of the Honors Program and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. A wonderful project for me that has arisen through the Honors Program is the opportunity to do some commissioned paintings, which will become part of the university collection. This commission, along with the juried university shows, are a great way to showcase my art to the public and ultimately get my name out so I can build a successful career.
