Pathways to Higher Education
If you’re thinking of studying a university course but don’t have the right qualifications, or feel you have studied the wrong A Levels or vocational qualifications for the career path you wish to pursue, our Foundation Entry Degrees and Access to Higher Education courses are ideal.
Higher National Certificates & Diplomas (HNCs & HNDs)
HNCs & HNDs are work-related qualifications, designed to give you the skills to put your knowledge to effective use in a particular job. They allow progression to a full-time Honours Degree.
Foundation Degrees
Designed by employers, Foundation Degrees are qualifications in their own right, equivalent to the first two years of an Honours Degree. They can be ‘topped-up’ to a full Honours Degree usually through one more year of study.

Honours Degrees
Our Honours Degrees are designed to develop analytical, intellectual and essay writing skills. You’ll undertake the first year of your Honours Degree at Runshaw College and then progress to complete the second and third years at UCLan in Preston.
Teacher Training
Our Certificate in Education and Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualifications offer a sound introduction to teaching within the post-compulsory sector. They can be studied over one year (full-time) or on a modular basis (part-time). You may also be able to undertake your teaching practice at Runshaw College which is an Ofsted outstanding institution and a National Teaching School.

Our Foundation Degree in Graphic Design has been designed to meet the diverse and challenging needs of the graphic design sector. As part of the course you will examine design fundamentals and develop your creative thinking and project management skills through live employer briefs. You’ll be able to work on creative projects outside classes in our ‘Pen+Pixel’ commercial graphics studio, while being provided with your own Apple MacBook during your studies at Runshaw.
Alternatively, our Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is an intensive one year course. It is primarily designed to bridge the gap between sixth form and university studies, supporting progression to a subject specialist art and design programme at art college, or to an Honours or Foundation Degree at university. As society’s interest in crime grows, new areas for criminological investigation are continually evolving and career opportunities related to understanding, preventing and controlling crime are on the increase. Our Foundation Degree offers those interested in issues of how crime is defined, perceived as a problem and managed in modern society, an opportunity to undertake a comprehensive study of these areas.

An enormous number of teaching opportunities exist across the learning and skills sector, in organisations including further education colleges, sixth forms, adult and community learning, the National Health Service, the Prison Service, the Police Service and in private sector training organisations. Whilst our programmes are primarily designed for those wishing to pursue a teaching career in the Post 16 sector, independent schools, academies and free schools within England, they also confer eligibility to apply for appropriate registration for Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills Status (QTLS).
Our programmes may be studied as individual qualifications in their own right or, as they are ‘modular’, they may be built up to a full Certificate in Education / Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Your teaching placement (paid or voluntary) is a central feature of our programmes.

Access to Higher Education
Change your life in a year…! Access to HE courses prepare you for university study and can be your passport to an entirely new career! They provide students aged 19+ with the skills and qualifications for progression to Degrees, Foundation Degrees and other higher level studies.
Your course may be FREE! Depending upon your age and circumstances, you could be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees. As loan repayments only start once you are earning over £21,000 a year, if you never earn this amount you’ll never make any repayments. What’s more, if you successfully complete your Access course and progress to and successfully complete a Degree / Higher Education course, the balance of your Access loan will be written off. This means your Access course could be free!
