TOHOKU UNIVERSITYA Guidbook for Clubs and Circles

Studying abroad at Tohoku University does not only mean writing assignments and tests but also taking part in the real students-life. If you want to get a genuine insight into Japanese Culture, you have to take part in a club or circle. It is not only a fun extra-curricular activity but also an opportunity to make new friends from dierent countries, learn the language, and live the culture by getting rst-hand experience.

There are not only sports clubs… What about learning how to cook international dishes, playing Japanese instruments or taking part in a traditional tea-ceremony? Do something you have never done before – Use the opportunity and experience it by yourself!

It is as simple as that: go to the club room and knock on the door! All you need is courage and faith in yourself. Here is an example of what you could say. Please also prepare for the following questions: 1. How long are you going to stay in Japan? 2. How are you going to stay in contact (twitter, line, FB, email, cellphone)? Keep in mind, that some clubs charge money. Please be on time and keep the rules!

Nice to meet you. My name is [name]. I am an international student from [country].

I want to join this club, is it okay?

I will stay in Japan from [month] to [month]. When and where do you usually have the activities?

How can I get information about the activities? Please contact me by 〇 〇.

For [staying period], how much is the club fee?

I’m at beginner level in Japanese. If possible, can you speak English to me? Thank you very much.

Extracurricular activities in Tohoku University are divided into two dierent types, which are based on the amount of time you spend on them.

Clubs are the agship of the university. They participate in competitions and tournaments. Therefore they have a tight schedule, frequent and very long practice hours. Most of the so called ‘premium‘ clubs start early in the morning and have practice times up to 6 or 7 times a week. If you are a professional and eager to spend much time on your hobby, you should join one of these clubs. Despite that, some clubs welcome all students of any level.

Circles on the other hand are student-organized activities. The practices and meeting times are usually less frequent, often between 2 and 3 times a week. You meet other students who share the same interest as you and have fun together. Some of the circles have exhibitions, performances or smaller competitions once or twice a year. If you want to try something new or enjoy your hobby, a circle provides you with a good opportunity to achieve this.

Be aware of:1. Clubs & circles may charge additional fees for example for equipment or travel expenses. It depends on the activity. Some take place outside of Sendai like Yacht Club or Ski Club. 2. Cult Activities which hide in ‘circles‘. These groups lure students with nice oereings in their societies. Students may have nancial lossses, perform illigal activities or will be pressured to cut ties with families or friends. If you feel suspicious please report it immediately to the university.
